One of the questions we’re often asked is, “Do I need to rotate my winter tires?”

The short answer is yes. Next to checking your tire pressure, proper rotation of your winter tires is the second-most important maintenance step for any vehicle.

Moving your winter tires around from one position on your vehicle to another ensures their longevity and allows for optimal performance.

Why do we rotate winter tires?

The reason why we rotate winter tires is to promote even wear and extend their life as well as improve performance. Tires with good tread depth and even wear offer better:

  • Balance handling
  • Steering response
  • Traction on icy, slippery roads
  • Snow cornering
  • Braking performance

Why should front tires be rotated with rear tires?

Front tires on most vehicles experience more stress, wear, weight, alignment, and cornering force issues. Swapping your front tires to the back at regular intervals allows your tires the chance to wear at the same rate.

Do you need to rotate winter tires on all-wheel drive (AWD) and rear-wheel drive vehicles?

Yes. The same rules for rotating winter, summer, and all-weather tires apply to all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles and rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The front tires on AWD vehicles are more likely to wear out faster in the front than in the back. The sensors that monitor AWD vehicles sometimes work in overdrive, especially when you have severely worn tires on the back. Rotating all four winter tires puts less stress on the components and sensors of your AWD system.

Rear-wheel drive vehicles exert more force on the back tires than the front, so it’s important to

rotate your rear tires to the front from left to right to ensure even wear.

How often should you rotate your winter tires?

Similar to their warmer-weather counterparts, winter tires should be rotated approximately every 8,000 to 10,000 kilometres, or to the tire manufacturer’s recommended time.

Ask your Kal Tire Service Team to rotate your tires when they are changed over for the winter season, and at other regular intervals.

Rotations are also a good chance for your service team to catch any alignment issues due damage from:

  • Potholes
  • Snow-hidden curbs
  • Accidents
  • Worn parts

Some slight misalignments won’t be felt at the steering wheel. However, they can show up as uneven wear on tires. Going in for regular tire rotations helps to gauge alignment issues early on, and prevent suspension problems in the future.

What are the rotation patterns used for different types of vehicles and tires?

Depending on your vehicle’s drive system, and your tires, rotations follow a handful of patterns based on several factors, including whether your tires are:

  • Directional
  • Asymmetrical
  • Non-Directional

Directional tread-pattern tires, identified by an arrow on the sidewall, are designed to roll only in one direction. Directional tires should only be rotated from front to back or back to front and on the same side of the vehicle to make sure they are pointing in the right direction.

Asymmetrical tires, where the inner and outer halves of the tire have different tread patterns, should be rotated from front to back on the same side of the car, but not from one side to the

How and Why to Rotate Your Tires

Tire rotation, that is routinely repositioning your vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back or side to side, is an important element of tire upkeep and safety. WHAT IS TIRE ROTATION?

Tire rotation means periodically changing the position of each of the tires on your vehicle. You should rotate your tires as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, or every 5,000 miles. For many of you, that will mean when you get your vehicle’s oil changed.

Regularly rotating your tires also gives you a good opportunity to visually inspect them for damage, check their air pressure, have them rebalanced if you’re noticing any vibration, and check their tread depth.

WHY IS TIRE ROTATION IMPORTANT?

There are several reasons why tire rotation is an important element of your standard tire care. First, by routinely rotating your tires, wear is spread evenly across all four tires, and their tread life is maximized. That’s because each specific position on your vehicle requires a different give from each tire—(for example, tires on the front of a front-wheel drive vehicle will take a larger proportion of the torque and friction that’s needed for turning, accelerating and braking)—and can lead to more, or less, wear on the tire. It is especially important to rotate new tires by 5,000 miles because deep, fresh tire tread is more susceptible to uneven wear.

Secondly, even tread wear keeps the tread depth on your tires uniform, which can help keep traction and handling consistent across all four tires. This will improve cornering and braking performance and keep your vehicle safer for driving overall.

Finally, if your vehicle has all-wheel-drive, evenly worn tires lower the stresses on the drivetrain, reducing wear on expensive drive components.

WHAT TIRE ROTATION PATTERN SHOULD I UTILIZE?

The tire rotation pattern that’s best for your vehicle will depend on the type of tire you’re using, whether your vehicle is front, rear, all, or four-wheel drive, whether your tires are directional or non-directional, whether or not your tires are the same size on the front and rear of your vehicle, and whether you have a full-size spare that can be rotated through as well, unlike a temporary spare. . Let’s take a look at tire rotation patterns recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, The Tire and Rim Association, Inc., for all of these possibilities.

SAMPLE VISUAL:

FOR TIRES THAT ARE OF UNIFORM SIZE AND NON-DIRECTIONAL:

1.     REARWARD CROSS

For vehicles that are 4-wheel, all-wheel, or rear-wheel drive, the rearward cross pattern is recommended. Rear tires are moved to the forward axle and kept on the same side of the vehicle while the front tires are moved to opposite sides of the rear axle.

2.     X-PATTERN

Recommended for front-wheel drive vehicles such as light-weight trucks and sedans, all tires are moved diagonally, meaning tires are switched from one axle to the opposite as well as being repositioned from one side to the other.

3.     FORWARD CROSS

This is the most common pattern for front-wheel drive vehicles. The front axle tires are moved directly back while the rear tires are moved up diagonally to the opposite side of the front axle.

FOR TIRES THAT ARE OF UNIFORM SIZE AND NON-DIRECTIONAL WITH A FULL-SIZE SPARE TIRE:

In order to insure that all of the tires on your vehicle have even tread wear, you’ll want to be sure to rotate your full-size spare tire along with the other four. This is especially vital for all-wheel or 4-wheel drive vehicles where even small differences can put undue strain on your car’s drive train.

1.     REARWARD CROSS (REAR-WHEEL OR 4-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES):

Both rear axle tires move directly forward to the front axle while the spare tire moves to the right side of the rear axle. The right front tire moves diagonally back to the left side of the rear axle while the left front tire becomes your new spare tire.

1. Don't wait for the cold weather

Drivers who have lost control of their car in ice or snow conditions are frequent customers of car services. Both tire fitting and body shop. However, winter tires do not require changing them only when frost sets in. The design of winter tires is such that they begin to work effectively even at an average daily temperature of plus 7 degrees Celsius. And summer tires at this temperature already begin to work incorrectly: the rubber compound hardens and does not provide proper grip.

Do not wait for snow and change tires in advance, based on the average daily temperature.

2. Check the condition of the winter tires before changing them

The very first parameter of tire wear is the remaining tread height. According to Russian legislation, for winter tires it must be at least 4 mm. You can check this not only with a caliper, but also with a simple match, the height of the sulfuric head of which is 3-4 mm. When immersing a match between the tread lamellas, the sulfur head must be completely hidden from view.

Most modern tires have built-in wear indicators. The initial tread height of new Nokian Tires winter tires is on average 8-9 mm.

Tread height is not the only thing to consider. Damage such as splitting or cracking of the tread, bulges or other damage to the sidewall of the tire is a clear indication that it needs to be replaced. But if a self-tapping screw is suddenly found between the tread blocks, it can be easily repaired. The exception is run flat tires, most manufacturers of which exclude the possibility of repair.

Uneven tread wear should also attract your attention - when the shoulder area is worn much more than the central one and vice versa. In such a situation, variants with incorrect tire pressure or “left” wheel alignment angles are possible - wheel alignment may be required.

Nokian Tires experts, however, emphasize that a slight difference in the nature of tread wear is acceptable, because tires on a drive axle wear out more in the central part of the tread, while in freely rotating tires, the shoulder part. That is why the company recommends rearranging the wheels from one axle to another every 8 thousand kilometers. Another recommendation from Nokian Tires is that tires in the best condition (with the least wear) should always be mounted on the rear axle of the car and not on the front, even if your car is front-wheel drive. The last step, if you do not take into account the neat packaging of summer tires in branded bags and then in the trunk of the client, is the final tightening of the wheel nuts. This process is carried out with the car standing on the floor of the workshop strictly using a torque wrench adjusted to the correct tightening torque.

This eliminates two possible serious problems at once - overtightening of the studs, and, conversely, insufficient tightening of the threaded connection. The first option can lead to the breakage of the stud, the second - to the loss of the wheel on the move. 4. Handle your new tires with care
