Even if a car enthusiast uses studded tires, the installation of chains should not be abandoned, since this will not only significantly improve traction, but also create additional protection against friction, skidding and bogging down. Moreover, chains are a necessary element of the wheel when driving on roads in mountainous terrain.

Benefits of using snow chains

Snow chains are fitted to a variety of vehicles, from tractors and trucks to ordinary cars and ATVs. Benefits of using snow chains:

• Compact size. Agree, it is much more convenient to carry a set of chains with you than a set of studded wheels if you often need to leave the city for hard-to-reach terrain, especially if you have to drive off-road.
• Metal "toothed" chain elements allow you to move comfortably and safely even on a completely icy road.
• The chains are made of stainless steel, so they are resistant to corrosion processes, as well as to the influence of reagents, such as salt.

How to install snow chains

Installation does not require much effort or great physical strength.

• The chain is located in front of the wheel, while the locks should “look forward” and be on the outside, on the inside there should be a hook.
• Next, you need to run over the chain so that from the end of the chains to the wheel there is from 20 to 30 cm.
• The free section of the chain is thrown over the wheel and fixed with a hook on the inside, the chain is stretched along the entire wheel. The lock must be fastened to a link located as far as possible from it.

Once one chain is installed, you can move on to the second, and so on. It should be taken into account that it is better to practice the installation near the house several times and only then leave the city so that in difficult weather conditions the process takes place automatically.

How different types of snow chains are used

All chains are:

• With hard tread.
• With soft tread.

The first type is made entirely of metal, the second is reinforced rubber grouser.

When driving on chains with a hard tread, it must be taken into account that their use implies significant speed limits and driving exclusively on icy and snowy road sections, while with a soft tread you can also move on ordinary dry asphalt roads. The advantage of soft tread chains is that they practically do not disturb the geometry of the tires, so they cause less damage to them, extending the life of the tires.

Please note that:

• After installing snow chains, use a slower speed, especially when entering corners.
• Starting from a standstill is not recommended.
• Harsh braking must be avoided.

If the area is not very icy, you can do with the installation of chains only on the drive wheels, if the passage is very difficult, it is recommended to install chains on all wheels. The latter is highly recommended for those who intend to travel on absolute off-road.

Things to consider when using snow chains

When using these devices, some recommendations must be observed:

• The maximum travel speed with hard chains is 40 km/h, with soft chains up to 80 km/h.
