Determining the Width & Height of Your 18 Inch Tires

Knowing your vehicle's tire width (also called cross section) and height is an important step when shopping for tires. To determine these measurements, check the vehicle's tire information placard on the door jamb of the driver's side door. Or, check the sidewalls of your current tires. You'll see a series of numbers and symbols that look like this: P265/35 R22. The first number in the series (265) is the width of your tires. It is measured in millimeters (mm). Pirelli showcases new 18-inch F1 tires compared to current

Next year, Formula 1 is switching to new tires for 18-inch wheels instead of the usual 13-inch ones. Tests of new rubber have been going on for a long time, these tires have been tested, including Daniil Kvyat. This reform will affect not only the appearance of cars: the wheel itself will become heavier and will significantly change the physics of its movement.

Modest-sized "donuts" with a giant sidewall - one of the essential attributes of Formula 1 since 1980 years when 13-inch wheels were officially enshrined in the rules of the world championship. Despite the fact that wheels of this size have been used in Grand Prix since the 60s, then the tires could be different - relatively low-profile on the front axle and gigantic on the rear.

But soon the regulations prescribed the use of the same tire height on all wheels of the cars, although the width of the tires front and rear was different for a long time and is different now. Small wheels have become one of the image problems of Formula 1, since it was difficult to explain why the top category of motorsport is still using wheels and tires that have not been found even on mass cars for a long time, not to mention supercars.

The decision to switch to 18-inch low profile tires was made with the change in the technical regulations in Formula 1, but in the end the coronavirus pandemic forced the planned reforms to be shifted from the 2021 season to 2022. And it is the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix that will mark the end of more than half a century of history of 13-inch wheels and high-profile tires in Formula 1 and the beginning of a new page with already 18-inch wheels and low-profile tires that are more or less close to road cars.

For the first time, Pirelli, which has been the exclusive supplier of racing tires for the World Championship since 2011, demonstrated 18-inch tires in 2014 on the car on the Lotus E22 car of the Lotus F1 Team - then the team's test driver, Frenchman Charles Pic, showed what they could look like new tyres. But there were still six long years to go before racing - for the first time, 18-inch Pirelli tires made their debut in the Grand Prix in 2020, when the Formula 2 youth monoseries switched to new tires. During this time, Formula 1 teams and Italian tire manufacturers managed to spend 36 test days on cars adapted for 18-inch wheels in order to prepare for the 2022 season.

Only from the outside it seems that there is nothing complicated in this - they say, change the disks and all the problems. In fact, the elimination of high-profile tires requires changes in the suspension, since 13-inch tires played an important role in absorbing bumps and with the transition to low-profile rubber, engineers had to look for new ways to ensure that the already far from smooth cars did not turn into a mobile shaker. . In the end, the comfort of the pilot and the reliability of the entire car depend on the relative softness of the ride. Fortunately, the suspension modifications "merged" into the overall modification of racing cars to the new technical regulations.

18-inch Formula One wheel

Pirelli's 13-inch racing tires made their debut in 1981 at the San Marino Grand Prix, when the Candy Toleman Motorsport team used new Italian tires for the Toleman TG181 cars of British Derek Warwick and Brian Henton, and the first victory for 13-inch Pirelli tires had to wait until the 1985 French Grand Prix, which was won by the Brazilian Nelson Piquet in a Motor Racing Developments Brabham BT54.

C 1989 to 1991, Pirelli was represented in Formula 1 with tires under the P Zero brand, and the next return of the Italians to the World Championship took place in 2011. And it is this company that has written itself into the history of world motorsport that will have to start a new chapter - a phenomenal 2021 season will put an end to the glorious history of 13-inch tires, and the Bahrain Grand Prix, if everything goes according to plan, will begin a period in 2022 18 inch tires.

What do 18-inch F1 tires mean

Yesterday Charles Peak showed up at Silverstone in a Lotus E22 with 18-inch wheels, marking the first step in F1's path to low profile tyres.

In general, this move can be explained by image motives, since it is now customary to install wheels with a small radius only on inexpensive mass-produced cars.

Initially, the requirement to use 13-inch discs appeared in the regulations so that the teams would not be able to install larger brake discs in the wheels. And since the size of the brake discs is now regulated by itself, this restriction no longer makes sense.

The final radius of the wheels with tires installed on them on Charles Peak's car was the same, which means that the rubber itself was used low-profile - with narrow sidewalls.

Pirelli could in theory make tires for 19- or 20-inch wheels with an even lower profile, but there are limits.

“In terms of strength, it's important to keep the tire's relatively wide sidewalls,” said Pirelli Motorsport CEO Paul Hembrey. “In corners, they are subject to severe lateral loads that are transferred from the tread to the base of the tires precisely through the sidewalls, and if they become too narrow, the tires will tend to fly off the rim.”

SUSPENSION

If the championship does decide to move in this direction, it will be necessary to carefully prepare for such a step in technical terms.

We often see in on-board cameras that tires play an important role in suspension performance. If you put low-profile tires on these cars, you need to recalculate the suspension kinematics so that it operates taking into account the less damping effect from the rubber. This means that the suspension will have to be made softer and with more travel.

On the other hand, under the current conditions, the teams have no control over this "extra suspension travel" gained from the tires, and if they switch to wheels with a larger radius, it will be easier for them to calculate the final compression and rebound.
