Against the backdrop of an increase in the load on the infrastructure, VK asked the Ministry of Digital Transformation to help find a vendor ready to sell “tens of thousands of servers” to the company, Kommersant found out. It is no longer possible to simply purchase foreign equipment, even used equipment, on the market, its participants say. Soon problems will also arise with Russian servers: the stocks of Baikal and Elbrus processors, on which they work, are running out, and new stable deliveries are not planned yet.

Kommersant’s source in the government said that VK (formerly Mail.ru Group) sent a letter to the Ministry of Digital Transformation last week asking for help in purchasing “tens of thousands of servers” .
According to Kommersant's interlocutor, VK cannot purchase commercial batches of computer equipment on the market, which are necessary both to ensure the current operation of the company's services and to scale the IT infrastructure.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation confirmed receipt of the letter, noting that, with the participation of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, "they are taking measures to provide the public sector and commercial companies with a sufficient amount of Russian computer equipment that meets the highest requirements."
At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade emphasized that they "see no reason to escalate the situation" in the computer technology market: "Companies are operating normally, no problems with the availability of products in the warehouse have been identified."
VK told Kommersant that they are seeing an increase in activity from users, which leads to an increase in the load on the infrastructure. But they assured that the company "has the necessary reserve capacity to ensure the uninterrupted operation of services for a long period.
"
Apparently, Yandex is also experiencing difficulties with the purchase of new equipment. The company has suspended many of its planned investments in new and experimental services at home and abroad amid sanctions due to the situation in Ukraine, TASS reported April 21, citing the company's annual report. In Yandex, Kommersant was assured that "at the moment they have the necessary technological resources and reserves for the operation of services."
At the same time, Kommersant's source in the market of data center operators confirms that today it is practically impossible to buy commercial batches of new equipment in Russia.
“It is impossible to buy servers even on the secondary market, used equipment scattered in early March, despite exorbitant prices,” notes the interlocutor of Kommersant. It is impossible to buy foreign-made equipment, confirms Alexander Sysoev, head of the Infrastructure Solutions division of Krok.
Mr. Sysoev believes that the typical tasks of most clients can be solved with the help of solutions from Russian manufacturers that continue to assemble and supply servers from their own components.
There are at least ten such suppliers in Russia, he said. But the market participants interviewed by Kommersant claim that the stocks of Russian computer manufacturers are also running out.
According to the director of Promobit, Maxim Koposov, now his company's warehouses have a stock of components for only a few hundred servers.
“We have taken the path of manufacturing servers based on Russian processors, but it's hard to get them right now. We have a stock of several hundred Elbrus, and we also ordered about a thousand Baikals,” he said. MCST (produces Elbrus) and Baikal Electronics did not respond to Kommersant's requests.
According to Kommersant's interlocutor in the market of Russian design centers, MCST has almost exhausted the stocks of the Elbrus 8C processor, however, he says, a fairly large batch of Elbrus 8SV processors is in the server manufacturer Norsi-Trans. The general director of Norsi-Trans, Sergey Ovchinnikov, did not answer Kommersant's question about how many servers and processors are in the company's warehouses, noting only that they will last until 2023.
