It's nearly 2022 and we have phones that survive water damage, folding digital screens and so much more. Yet, rubber tires filled with air remain the go-to way to help a car roll around. That's the way it's been for decades but it's going to change soon. When 2024 rolls around, we may finally see a revolution in tire technology, thanks to airless tires.
Michelin is one of several tiremakers that have been developing airless tires but they seemed as unlikely to become a reality as GM's early vision of self-driving cars. Now, however, the two companies are putting a pin in the calendar to have airless tires on the market by 2024.
The first thing you notice about the airless Michelin Uptis, or Unique Puncture-proof Tire System tires is that you can see through them. Glass-fiber reinforced plastic vanes support the tread rather than air pressure.
These airless tires rely on flexible plastic vanes to achieve their compliance with varying road surfaces and driving dynamics.
MichelinFrom there, the benefits tumble forth: Nails become minor annoyances and sidewall cuts that usually render a tire unrepairable are no longer possible. There would be no need to check tire inflation (you've probably ignored my admonitions to do that anyway) and we'd say goodbye to spare tires, jacks and inflation kits that most drivers view as mysterious objects anyway. Blowouts that cause thousands of crashes a year would be impossible.
Big deal. Nails in an airless tire are virtually meaningless.
MichelinUptis tires also have a green angle: The promise to scrap 200 million fewer tires worldwide each year by eliminating sidewall cuts and accelerated wear due to improper inflation. This environmental benefit will accrue regardless of which companies crack the code for airless tires.
Aspects I'll watch on the road to the airless tire include:
Airless tires will be an overdue leap forward. Today's pneumatic ones date back as far as combustion engine cars, and we know which way those are going.
The SportContact 7 tire from Continental debuts new technical know-how: the tread pattern of the novelty adapts to dry and wet roads thanks to the individual design of the tire carcass for different classes. The novelty provides maximum driving pleasure in any car, and the addition of a BlackChili compound to the tread compound, combined with an asymmetric pattern, provides excellent traction.
Continental has developed a sports tire to redefine tire performance standards and create a high level of driving confidence in the new flagship passenger car tyre.
“The focus of our development was that we wanted to create the best sports summer tire on the market for any class of vehicles,” says Prof. Dr. Burchard Wies, Head of Research and Development for Car and Truck Tire Replacement. Continental. - This means that we have achieved a significant improvement in performance on dry and wet roads, as well as on the race track, and that we offer a very long tire life, exceeding the previous model by 17 percent. Due to its low fuel consumption, as for this class of tires, the SportContact 7 received the Euro label, where it belongs to the C class in terms of economy. ”
Thanks to the asymmetric tread pattern, the new SportContact 7 adapts better to dry and wet roads. Thus, its driving characteristics remain at a consistently high and safe level even at high speeds. “You can put a lot of stress on the tire if you need to. Wis says. “In situations like this, the new improved pattern provides safe and confident handling, as well as excellent cornering stability on wet and dry roads.”
This is made possible by the original tread pattern. So, in order to provide exceptional grip during braking and acceleration, when maneuvering on wet roads, when driving in a straight line, the "tire track" ends at the point of highest water flow. In dry corners, the "trail" shifts to the outer shoulder, which is designed to transmit high forces for stable handling. Further stability is provided by new types of "locking elements" in the outer shoulder, which allow to limit the deformation of the tread blocks and therefore provide high road holding.
Conventional sports tires react differently to different vehicle concepts, depending on the weight, size and engine of the vehicle. “ Our new SportContact 7 is therefore the first product in the high-performance tire segment, tailor-made for each type of vehicle,” Wies explains. — Heavy vehicles require different tire solutions than light vehicles. The technical data of the SportContact 7 is therefore adapted to every vehicle class ".
« To this end, we have used new technologies, including developments in rally car tires used according to tire size, so that the typical behavior of the SportContact tires is maintained for each vehicle. That is, we have an individual design for different classes of cars. We can tailor sidewall strength and carcass design to provide handling and grip under varying loads and high speeds for every vehicle class ,” Vis adds.
One of the key technological components of the new SportContact 7 is the BlackChili rubber compound, adapted to the tread pattern. This soft compound is suitable for very stiff, low profile tire construction and not only provides very good performance, but also significantly less wear. To achieve this, Continental's tire engineers and chemists had to make some compromises. The result of their cooperation was an unusual technological rubber compound, which, together with the tread pattern, can significantly improve driving performance.
Continental's in-house tests show the striking difference between the new SportContact 7 and its popular predecessor SportContact 6: 17% longer life, 10% better racing performance, 8% shorter wet braking distances and 8% shorter dry braking distances. - by 6%. Also, the seventh generation SportContact is the best in terms of wet and dry handling and grip (comparative test of 245/30 R20 tires).

The KAMA ALGA line is designed for passenger cars.View sizes
The KAMA ALGA line is designed for passenger cars. The tire tread pattern has wave-like transverse grooves that provide traction during acceleration and braking properties on ice and snow. Due to the shape and volume of the grooves, they have a high degree of self-cleaning from snow and dirt. Longitudinal grooves complement the traction of the tread when driving in high-speed corners and provide the flexibility of the tread blocks, which affects the comfort of operation. The central groove provides effective removal of water and snow porridge from the contact patch of the tire with the road in slush conditions. Low noise level during tire rolling due to rotational displacement of the sides of the tread pattern, the use of a set of pattern elements of different widths and the arrangement of anti-skid studs.
