In addition to dropping the M to call it "Safety Data Sheets" (SDS), report formatting was also regulated. Prior to 2012, regulations regarding the order and content of a material safety data sheet varied between jurisdictions. The introduction of SDS was accompanied by layout rules, including a standardized, user-friendly format of 16 sections.
Companies had three years to complete the transition from MSDS to SDS.
SDS protects users of hazardous chemicals. In most jurisdictions, employers are required by law to provide their employees with appropriate safety data sheets to ensure they know how to properly handle any substances that are considered hazardous. The safety data sheet must be up to date so that the personnel can perform their work safely and without risk to their health.
Safety data sheets may vary by supplier, but all must contain the same important information, including hazardous ingredients, health effects, exposure limits, physical properties, and emergency procedures.
