Our story can begin with the phrase that everything new is well forgotten old. This same slogan can be applied to wheel balancing with pellets. It seems like this innovation cannot seem so hackneyed and well-known, because the progressiveness of the wheel balancing method due to granules or as they are also called powder is rather ordinary. So, logically, it should refer to the latest inventions. However, the grimace of history and the "iron curtain", which is merry over our country, in a certain way played a cruel joke on us. We learned a lot of elementary things only after his fall, and we still know something. This is exactly what can be said about the wheel balancing method using granules or, as we have already said, using powder.
So, let's first plunge into a digression of history, into the distant year 54-59 of the last century. It was during these years that the method of automatic balancing for the wheels of cars and even the wheelsets of railway trains from John C Wilborn was withered and patented. The patent is registered in the US Patent Office under the number US 2909389, under the name Automatic wheel balancer. That is, back in 1954, on November 18, this discovery was announced, and on October 20, 1959 years published.
In order not to be vocal, we will even give an illustration of an excerpt from this patent, where the very method of balancing wheels (tires) with the help of granules is already guessed.
In fact, there are more than a lot of such patents and references in 50 years. With this particular example, we just wanted to show that the history of the principle of automatic tire (wheel) balancing is already quite significant.
Well, now let's talk in more detail about what the granules are, the so-called wheel balancing powder among the people.
Balancing granules are balls, that is, a regular-shaped body. This is necessary in order to provide equal grip to the surface throughout the shape of the body. In addition, the pellets are coated with silicone and have a heavy ceramic or glass core in the center. The silicone dampens the impact of the granules and allows them to adapt to the shape of the surface to which they will “stick”. A heavy core is necessary in order to participate as much as possible in the wheel balancing process, that is, with a “correct” distribution, to have a “positive” effect.
As a result, the granules should have quite interesting properties. First of all, they must accumulate static electricity well, that is, they must have an electrostatic field, due to which they will be fixed in place. Secondly, to have as much weight as possible in order to influence the balance of the wheel. That is, these are factors that partly contradict one another. Indeed, with a large weight, it is difficult to hold the granules due to electrostatics, and with a small weight, their meaning is lost. The search for the proper ratio between these values, the choice of material that provides a high voltage of the static field, other individual characteristics of the granules, all this can be attributed to the know-how of each individual manufacturer, which is unlikely to reveal their secrets to you.
Now let's briefly talk about the process of balancing a tire, wheel using granules (powder). First of all, it is necessary to pour pellets into the wheel, and for this you need to know how much to pour into each particular wheel in order to ensure balance. You fall asleep a little - you will not provide balancing. A lot - you will get extra weight. Usually, manufacturers offer recommendation tables that indicate how many grams of granules need to be poured into a certain wheel size. Here is an example of such a table, which is absolutely not a dogma for all types of granules, but gives an idea that the volume and mass of granules increase from a smaller wheel size to a larger one.
Now about how you can balance the wheel with the help of such granules. Initially, the granules must be poured into the cavity of the tire or chamber, as we have already talked about. In this case, one of the following options applies. The first is when the granules are poured into the tire cavity when it is mounted on the wheel. The second, when the nipple is unscrewed, and the granules are poured through the fitting.
In principle, this is where the balancing process ends on your part. Then you just have to pump up the wheel to the proper pressure and hit the road. The balancing process will take place automatically. The granules are distributed in the cavity of the chamber and the tire in such a way that the imbalance during the rotation of the wheel will be minimal, that is, the wheel will self-balance. About how this happens, about the principle of the "correct" distribution of granules, we will just tell in our next paragraph.
So, let's first put together everything we know about balancing pellets from the above. The granules have balanced properties in terms of weight and electrostatic field, which allows them to stay on the surface of the tire (rubber). Granules are poured in sufficient volume to ensure balance, but no more.
Now let's imagine what happens when driving if the wheel is not balanced and these very granules are poured into it. Of course, during rotation, the wheel will bounce from the uneven distribution of centrifugal force around the entire perimeter. Thus, vibrations, shocks, bouncing will be observed ... All these significant mechanical effects will constantly shake the granules that are in the wheel. As a result, now and then they will randomly move around the volume until the wheel “calms down”. And the wheel will “calm down” only in one case, when the centrifugal force around the entire perimeter, and hence the mass, will be balanced, that is, the wheel will be balanced. In this case, the vibrations will be weakened to such an extent that the electrostatic and centrifugal force holding the granules is enough to ensure that they remain in their position, that is, they ensure wheel balance. We can say that balancing in this case occurs automatically and spontaneously, whether we want it or not.
This is a peculiar feature on the principle of which granules (powder) for wheel balancing “work”.
In order to make it more clear to you, we will give you an example of a crumb from foam. Everyone saw how sometimes foam crumbs - balls, stick well to objects. Moreover, if you shake it strongly, it will change its place, but often it will be close to its original location. Roughly the same thing happens in the tire. Another example is the centrifuge of a washing machine. Initially, while the laundry is not yet distributed over the entire surface of the drum, the washing machine can move and bounce, but then, due to centrifugal force, the laundry is distributed in such a way that a more or less stable balance appears, that is, the machine calms down, further spinning of the laundry occurs without vibration.
Let's now summarize all the advantages and disadvantages of balancing granules or as they say powder. The advantages are obvious. You don't need a balancing machine. With significant wear, tread tearing, disc jamming, self-balancing will occur. The granules will change their position, thereby providing the desired result without any difficulty, which is especially important on the track and on long trips. However, there are plenty of downsides as well. The balancing granules are kept inside only due to electrostatic and centrifugal force, thus, with each significant push, the granules can fly off their places, thereby unbalancing will occur, which, although it will be restored after a few kilometers, the wheels will be unbalanced for some time. That is, balancing granules "do not like" rough roads. Secondly, they are quite heavy for passenger cars. After all, as you noticed, if you read our article from the beginning, the minimum weight of the poured granules is about 100 grams. This is quite a lot for passenger cars, when sometimes a load of 5-7 grams is enough. Why additionally “hang” an extra mass on the wheels, which will participate in inertial processes during acceleration and braking, increase the impact on the suspension and bearings.
It can be argued that balancing pellets are justified for trucks and on flat roads. It is in this case that there is a reason to apply and use such know-how as automatic wheel balancing!
Wheel balancing with granules is an innovative way to balance the heavy points of tires with special microbeads without the use of stands or weights. Thanks to this method, it is possible to extend the life of the tire and reduce the load on the steering components.
Wheel balancing with granules allows you to balance all the rotating elements of the tire while the vehicle is moving. Thanks to this adjustment, the load on the chassis, fuel consumption and tire wear are reduced.
These are small round shaped proppants with a silicone shell. Their cores are made of refractory material. The diameter of the wheel balls is from 0.15-2 mm. They have a hard structure (7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale) and a porosity of less than 0. 3%. The peculiarity of this composition guarantees the minimum abrasion of the granules and a long service life.
Bead powder made of glass and ceramics is used to balance car wheels. The first version of the proppant has poor water resistance.
When worn, the beads form hydroscopic glass dust, which accumulates in lumps in certain areas of the tire, which can further increase the unbalance. Ceramic wheel balls do not have this drawback, but due to their high strength, they wear out the tire from the inside.
Beads are used to fill the inner space of the car camera. During the trip, the balls roll and are evenly distributed over the tire due to the action of centrifugal forces. Due to friction against the wall, the microbeads accumulate an electrostatic charge and stick together in places of maximum load, correcting the imbalance of the tire.
When the machine stops, the proppant will maintain its position. If the wheel runs into a pit, curb or any other obstacle at speed, the balls will peel off. So that they can balance the tire again, the driver needs to accelerate the car on a flat surface to 30-50 km / h.

Balancing with granules - review
There are two ways to balance the mass of all elements of tires using microgranules:
