Overview
Innovators at NASA's Glenn Research center have developed a game changing, non-pneumatic, compliant tire. This innovation, called the Superelastic Tire, was developed for future Moon and Mars missions, but is a viable alternative to pneumatic tires here on Earth. This technology represents the latest evolution of the Spring Tire which was invented by NASA Glenn and Goodyear, and inspired by the Apollo lunar tires. The novel use of shape memory alloys capable of undergoing high strain as load bearing components, instead of typical elastic materials, results in a tire that can withstand excessive deformation without permanent damage. Using shape memory alloy as radial stiffening elements can also increase the load carrying capacity of the tire. The Superelastic Tire offers traction equal or superior to conventional pneumatic tires and eliminates both the possibility of puncture failures and running "under-inflated", thereby improving automobile fuel efficiency and safety. Also, this tire design does not require an inner frame which both simplifies and lightens the tire/wheel assembly.
The Technology
This NASA Glenn innovation comprises a non-pneumatic, compliant tire utilizing shape memory alloys (mainly NiTi and its derivatives) as load bearing components. These shape memory alloys are capable of undergoing significant reversible strain (up to 10%), enabling the tire to withstand an order of magnitude more deformation than other non-pneumatic tires before undergoing permanent deformation. Commonly used elastic-plastic materials (e.g. spring steels, composites, etc.) can only be subjected to strains on the order of ~ 0.3-0.5% before yielding. Hence, the use of a NiTi shape memory alloy produces a superelastic tire that is virtually impervious to plastic deformation. In addition, the utilization of shape memory alloys provides enhanced control over the effective stiffness as a function of the deformation, providing increased design versatility. For instance, the Glenn Superelastic Tire can be made to soften with increased deflection, reducing the amount of energy transferred to the vehicle during high deformation events. In addition, the use of shape memory alloys in the form of radial stiffeners, as opposed to springs, provides even more load carrying potential and improved design flexibility. This type of compliant tire would allow for increased travel speeds in off-road applications.

“Hakkaa päälle!”
Nokian Hakkapeliitta's 80-year quest to improve winter tire technology has included hundreds of innovations and stunning world records. Nokian Tires is the world's northernmost manufacturer of winter tires that guarantee safety in harsh winter conditions all over the world.
The world's first Kelirengas winter tire was invented in Finland in 1934, its grooved tread helped trucks in winter conditions. The revolutionary invention eliminated the need for snow chains to keep the car on the road. In 1936, Suomen Gummitehdas, the company we now know as Nokian Tires, also developed the first winter tire for passenger cars.
The new tire was named Lumi-Hakkapeliitta (Snow Hakkapeliitta) and paved the way for the future Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyre. The tire is named after the legendary Finnish cavalry "hakapelita".
In the 1950s, the roads were ironed out by the growing traffic, leaving the road surface smooth and icy. Attempts to improve the grip of winter tires have included rubber inserts with metal sleeves, tread rubber compounds with ceramic inclusions, and various anti-skid metal parts fixed to the tread.
In 1961, the company finally made a breakthrough with the combination of the Hakkapeliitta winter tyre, Kometa studs and a patent for a studded tire by Veikko Rihonen, a rubber industry technician. At the same time, on ice, grip was carried out due to hard metal spikes, and on snow, due to the tire itself.
The excellent grip of studded tires attracted worldwide interest in the legendary Monte Carlo rallies in the 1950s and 1960s. In particular, the Kometa-Hakkapeliitta studded tire dominated snowy and icy mountain roads. The invention quickly won international recognition.
In the 1970s, the company began producing non-studded winter tires at the same time as the studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta. They have become a quieter alternative to their "big brother". Their grip performance was due to the deep sipe tread pattern and innovative rubber compound.
Relentless development efforts have enabled Nokian Tires to become a major international company and promote the use of winter tires around the world. After World War II, Nokian Hakkapeliitta produced 20,000 tires, and today we estimate that over 700 million winter tires help drivers reach their destination safely in winter conditions. The adoption of winter tire legislation in Europe has increased the number of winter tyres.
In addition to the Scandinavian countries, Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tires are used in the rest of Europe, North America, Russia and wherever drivers face difficult conditions during the winter months.
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta product family includes studded and non-studded winter tires for passenger cars, vans and SUVs. The latter category represents the fastest growing segment in the tire market. The company has also developed specialized models for trucks, wheel loaders and tractors.
The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tire was released in 2013. The modern technologies used in its creation provide a combination of safety and driving comfort. The new studding technology has reduced fuel consumption and provided softer contact with the road surface, which has been widely welcomed by drivers. In 2013, the Hakkapeliitta 8 was tested under extreme conditions, when the Nokian Tires test driver set a stunning world ice speed record of 335.713 km/h.
Two years later, in 2015, Nokian Tires launched the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 winter tire with the best fuel economy rating in class A according to the EU tire label. The modern 155/70R19 84Q studless tire is designed specifically for BMW i3 electric vehicles. Non-studded tires are the technology of the future, enabling high performance and safe, fuel-efficient driving in the harsh Scandinavian winter conditions.
There are several versions of the history of the name Hakkapeliitta. Finnish cavalrymen who served in the Swedish army in the 17th century were called "hakapelita". During the offensive, the cavalrymen issued their legendary battle cry "Hakkaa päälle!" ("Attack!"). Likewise, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tire has been battling tough road conditions for more than 80 years.
