Why do we get tired of thoughts

An excess of the neurotransmitter glutamate, formed during intense mental work, prevents the brain from working as it should.

You can get tired not only from physical work, but also from thoughts - not from some specific heavy thoughts, but from mental stress. Many people know that in the evening you think worse than in the morning, that in the evening it can be difficult to remember what you ate for breakfast today, not to mention planning the next day. Someone explains this by saying that the brain expends energy - and it really expends energy - and more energy is spent on complex mental tasks than on simple ones. That is, cognitive fatigue is a sign of brain exhaustion, and you can get rid of it by supplying the brain with food, for example, glucose. But the energy hypothesis, despite its obviousness, was not experimentally confirmed. The brain consumes energy, but mental fatigue does not arise from this.

Researchers from the Brain Institute in Paris, the Pitiers-Salpêtrière Hospital and the Sorbonne University write in Current Biology that the neurotransmitter glutamate may be the cause. Glutamate (glutamic acid) is used by a variety of neural circuits, including those involved in memory and learning. At the same time, an excess of glutamate harms neurons - because of it, they become overexcited and die. In their experiments, the researchers used magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which uses radio waves and a magnetic field to estimate the amount and distribution of glutamate in the brain.

Thirty-nine experimental volunteers performed various tasks that were supposed to tire their brains. In one case, numbers and letters flashed quickly on the screen in front of a person, and you had to just as quickly determine what color the number or letter was, whether the letter was lowercase or uppercase, etc. In another case, you had to compare the number that you see right now, with the number that you saw three characters ago - that is, here you had to constantly keep in mind the appearing and disappearing numbers. For comparison, another group of volunteers performed the same tasks, but in a simpler version.

The experiment lasted six hours, with two ten-minute meal breaks. In addition, from time to time, the researchers asked the subjects to take a short mental fatigue test: they were asked to choose whether they wanted to get some money right now, or if they were willing to wait a few months and get more already. And if in the morning people made an economically reasonable choice in favor of a larger reward, then by the evening they preferred to receive money right now - an impulsive choice, indicating that it is already reluctant to think and compare benefits. This was the case in both groups, but where more complex task options were to be performed, the choice in favor of instantaneous benefit was made 10% more often, and the level of glutamate in the lateral prefrontal cortex was 8% higher. The lateral prefrontal cortex is involved in planning, and elevated levels of glutamate in it coincided with poor planning and impulsive behavior.

Now there are drugs that suppress glutamate signals - it is assumed that they can become drugs for various neuropsychiatric disorders, from depression to schizophrenia and epilepsy.
