Additional Topics of Interest:

Air Pressure

Keeping the correct air pressure in your tires is as important as giving your engine a tune up. With the right amount of air pressure, tires wear longer, save fuel, enhance handling and prevent accidents.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Service

TPMS is an automated system that monitors the air pressure in a vehicle's tires. When the air pressure in one or more tires drops 25 percent or more below the required pressure, a dashboard warning indicator alerts the driver. TPMS detects rapid loss of air pressure, reduces the possibility of tire failure, and can help improve tire life and fuel economy. Beginning in 2008, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires all new passenger cars and light trucks to be equipped with TPMS systems. Discount Tire stores sell retrofit kits for older vehicles not factory equipped with a TPMS system. We also provide TPMS service, and stock TPMS rebuild kits and replacement parts.

Only Replacing Two Tires?

We recommends mounting them on the rear. Deeper tread with greater hydroplaning resistance helps new tires grip wet roads. The driver can steer to compensate for the lower wet traction of the worn front tires and safely maintain control.

Plus Sizing

For greater lateral stability and increased steering response, plus sizing is one of the easiest ways to achieve enhanced performance and improve the appearance of your vehicle. Converting to a plus 1 size would mean increasing the wheel diameter by 1" and selecting an appropriate tire to fit. It is important to note that although the wheel diameter is increasing, the overall diameter of the tire remains consistent.

Tire Repair

For safety, tires are only repaired in accordance with RMA's (Rubber Manufacturers Association) Recommended Procedures.

Ride Matching

When a wheel and tire are mounted together they are seldom joined at the one ideal spot. Each of these units, though they may be built to specification, can add to the slight error of the other. As they spin together, the tire and wheel are exerting forces simultaneously in different directions generating a vibration. Ride Matching measures these forces and calculates how a particular wheel and tire pairing should be matched. The source of this disturbance cannot be sensed during wheel balancing. The Ride Matching process takes a skilled operator approximately 20 minutes to perform on a set of tires and wheels. The process will improve ride quality, performance and wear.

Desert Charm: Palm Springs Weekend - ET

“You're not afraid of snakes, are you? asked our guide Mike. “It’s just that we can meet them today.”

I shook my head, not looking up from the scenery. We were driving a red jeep down a dusty dirt road to Metate Ranch, a private three-square-kilometer desert sanctuary near Palm Springs, California. There was not a soul around, and the only sounds I heard were the rustle of the tires of our car. The ground was dry, and the ground and rock formations appeared almost white, in stark contrast to the dark blue sky above.

Desert Life

The desert is home to unique wildlife, from snakes and tarantulas to coyotes, lizards and birds. This region looks lifeless, and I was wondering how these creatures survive here. Then in the distance I saw rows of tall Californian fan palms. They seemed like a real oasis in the desert.

The San Andreas fault runs along the palm trees, stretching for 1300 kilometers. It starts in the south, thirty minutes from Greater Palm Springs, and ends at Point Mendocino on California's northern coast. Although there is no gaping hole in the ground along the fault line, there is an underground reservoir from which fresh water flows to the surface.

Mike parked the jeep and we followed him down a narrow path through the trees. He pointed to the hundreds of tiny animal footprints that come here every day to drink. The tracks led to a small stream that did not dry up all year round. It is his water that sustains life in the desert.

Upon landing at Palm Springs International Airport, I was amazed at the number of tall palm trees and vibrant flowers adorning this small town. It is located in a picturesque place, surrounded by mountains that rise so close that it seems you can touch them with your hand.

The Greater Palm Springs area has approximately 360,000 residents in nine different locations: Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Indio and Coachella.

In the past, Palm Springs was a mecca for movie stars and celebrities from Hollywood. This is reminiscent of the glitz and glamor of well-preserved mid-century architecture. Now it is a lively city with many young people. Palm Springs is still an oasis for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of California's big cities or just the cold.

My husband Benjamin and I love sunbathing on the weekends and Palm Springs did not disappoint. We stayed at the beautiful JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, which is an attraction in itself. The newly refurbished luxury resort is located on the lakefront overlooking the mountains and palm trees. Ben and I spent several hours lounging by the large pool and having breakfast here by the water.

JW Marriott Desert Springs is well known for its spas, and as an avid beauty lover, I couldn't pass up the chance to enjoy an aromatherapy massage. The 3,500 square meter resort features 48 treatment rooms, a Turkish hammam, a bistro and a saltwater pool. Spa treatments use locally produced citrus fruits and dates.

Natural mineral springs

Bathing in natural hot mineral water is an additional way to relax. I spent the morning bathing in the hot springs of the resort and day spa. Later, I also enjoyed delicious food and freshly squeezed juice in a healthy food cafe. Other mineral springs worth visiting are Two Bunch Palms, a resort that was built in 1930 and has long been a favorite getaway for celebrities, or El Morocco Inn & Spa, a Casablanca-style resort.

BMW Performance Center

Some are happy to be in a place to relax in the nearby hot springs. Others visit Palm Springs to get an adrenaline rush at the BMW Performance Center, a dedicated sports driving center open to the general public. Courses are taught by professional BMW drivers. After the briefing, participants get the opportunity to independently drive a BMW car, accompanied by an instructor.

While I was spending time at the mineral springs, my husband attended a driving school.

“It was completely different than I expected,” he said upon his return. “It was more than just a chance to drive around the track in a brand new BMW. This advanced school taught me everything from emergency braking to last-minute lane changes. We even worked with the skid pads to find out what to do about over- or under-manoeuvrability in wet weather. There were three instructors in our class of 11 students. They evaluated our driving in real time during each of the four real-life scenarios.”

Ben said that this training will be useful to him in life. But I think what he enjoyed the most was being able to race around the race track at the end of the day.

Shots in the Night

Although the weekend is fast-paced, we also had a few other fun activities. One evening we went to Shots in the Night, an interactive golf club that combines miniature golf with colorful lasers and glow-in-the-dark targets. Along with other families, many with school-age children, we hit glow-in-the-dark balls with golf clubs, trying to hit the laser-lit targets on the course. We were given a tablet computer and provided with a putting green.

The tablet interacts with lighting and sound on the game board. We chose one of the mini golf options. And the green field was painted with various light figures. Although my skill level was questionable, I haven't had this much fun playing golf in a long time.

Palm Springs Dining

A vacation isn't complete without tasting the local cuisine. Palm Springs is famous for many of the best establishments that can please any gourmet. We started our introduction to local food in Palm Springs with dinner at Babe's Bar-B-Que & Brewhouse. It can be hard to find a good barbecue, but Babe's has taken it to a whole new level. Everything was prepared very professionally. We tried the beer from the brewery and were also impressed. Babe's is the brainchild of Donald Callender, the man behind Marie Callender's food empire. Today, Babe's is run by his son, 26-year-old Lucky Callender, whose passion for the restaurant is evident.

One of the great things about eating in Palm Springs is that you can dine outdoors most of the year. Eight4Nine restaurant has one of the most beautiful outdoor seating I have ever seen. The white minimalist décor, complemented by twinkling lights, original artwork and chic table setting, is the perfect setting for a romantic engagement. We were not engaged, we found the setting very romantic, and we lingered there for a delicious meal.

Cuistot is another restaurant that is perfect for a special occasion. This French restaurant, located in a country French farmhouse, received top marks in the Zagat review. The food is amazing and the wine sommelier is so helpful and knowledgeable that each wine pairs perfectly with the dishes.

Bistro Lulu California. (Janna Graber)

Quirky, light-hearted and truly Californian bistro Lulu California is in a completely different style. The outdoor bistro site was full of life. We stopped there for a delicious and very budget afternoon snack. It was so much fun that we didn't refuse when they offered us a cotton candy dessert.

On our last evening in Palm Springs al fresco at Johannes, a European restaurant, we enjoyed dinner by Austrian-born chef Johannes Bacher. Baher is known as an "eclectic" chef, and as we sat on the restaurant's patio watching the sunset, we enjoyed sampling some of his unique Austrian classics.

This was a nice end to our weekend full of experiences only found in Palm Springs.
