The unemployment rate in Canada is about 6%. There is always a need for a lot of specialists, but the competition is very high. And not only between citizens of the country, but also between expats. By the way, there are only 30% of Canadians in Canada, the remaining 70% are immigrants, of which the majority are English (20%), French (15.5%), Scots (14.4%), Irish (13.8%), Germans (9.8%). And the Chinese, for example, 4.5%.
The country has a huge territory and relatively few people, so immigration is considered one of the main ways to fill the labor shortage, so the state has a “plan” to invite immigrants. For example, in 2020 their number should have reached 341 thousand, while in the previous year there were actually 437 thousand.
Immigration to Canada is divided into several classes, the main of which (65%) is economic. Highly qualified specialists and experienced workers of narrow areas in various industrial fields fall under it. This demand is due to the fact that the Canadian economy has been in great need of a professional workforce for more than a decade. In various areas - construction, light and heavy industry, oil and gas production, agriculture and forestry, mining, hotel business.
The country is constantly in need of engineers, air traffic controllers, doctors, analysts. But knowledge workers are in low demand - local vacancies in these areas are occupied by graduates of local universities. Although the same IT-shniks can easily find a "warm place" even here.
Depending on requests at the country or province level, individual programs may be closed and replaced by new ones. So, in 2020, in Quebec, the authorities closed a popular program for those who already studied or worked in Canada, and instead opened two new ones: for medical personnel and IT specialists.
By the way, if you are seriously thinking about moving, first pay attention to the larger cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa. The unemployment rate here is lower than the national average, and there are more vacancies. Although, given the number of specialists in various fields in demand, it is possible to find a job in Canada almost anywhere - the question is your skills and salary preferences.
You can look at the alternative TOP of attractive Canadian cities. Perhaps your dream job is waiting for you there.
To find a suitable place if you do not have personal connections and acquaintances, there are several options:
You can also search the top 100 Canadian job search sites.
See also: Looking for a job abroad: TOP international services with vacancies
It will not be superfluous to look through the relevant section of the country's major newspapers: Montreal Gazette, Vancouver Sun, National Post and others. Most often, vacancies are placed in the classifieds section. If you don’t want to waste time, contact a recruiting agency, for example, Randstad. Or search through YP.
In some cases, you can directly call the offices of the companies you are interested in and find out what specialists are needed and what requirements must be met. It makes sense to contact large Canadian companies: Canadian Natural Resources, The Woodbridge Company, Imperial Oil, Sun Life Financial. Although, of course, you can not be limited to this list: you can even contact the nearest chain restaurant, hotel, educational institution or hospital - you can find a place everywhere.
It is not uncommon for local businesses to want the applicant to already have experience working for a Canadian organization. In this case, you can work as a volunteer for some time: there is no payment for such work, but a certificate of who and how much you worked will be issued.

Language skills
This is a mandatory requirement. In any case, you will have to communicate with the locals, even if you find a place with the Russians (which, by the way, is unlikely). Moreover, the locals are not very tolerant and will not wait long for you to master English - they will simply refuse your services. Therefore, you need to come to the country already knowing the language at least at an acceptable level for communication.
And if you plan to move to Quebec, then you will also need to know French, since this is the main language here.
Education and skills
Take a sober approach to what you know and can do. In Canada, for the most part, specialists with significant experience and certain knowledge are required - it is difficult to find a non-core job here. Even on local farms, Canadians prefer to hire not universal workers, but narrow specialists in order to spend resources as rationally as possible.
The level of education is of great importance. If you have not graduated from a Canadian, British or European university, you may need to nostrify your diploma. In particular, this applies to professions that require qualifications (engineer, architect, doctor, teacher, geologist, etc.).
A list of all regulated professions requiring document recognition can be found here.
Medical examination
Mandatory for obtaining a work visa. It is held at the medical center at the International Organization for Migration (for a fee). This procedure is not as simple as it seems. First you need to get a referral (medical questionnaire) from the Canadian embassy and undergo an examination within 60 days.
The result is valid for one year and upon receipt is sent to the Canadian Immigration Medical Center in London, reviewed within three months by the Canadian High Commission. The latter issues a final conclusion, which is sent to the embassy.
Official employment
It is better not to initially consider working illegally in Canada. And the point here is not only in the subsequent deportation with a ban on entry into the country, but also in poor social conditions. You will not be able to work in a well-paid position unofficially, you will not have social benefits and guarantees, and you will receive, say, a handyman, about $ 5-5.5 per hour.
By the way, for illegal employment, both the employee and the employer face imprisonment for up to 10 years, as well as considerable fines.
By the way, in order to understand how you can move to Canada and whether it is realistic in your particular case, take a test on the government portal, which will display the most available options. The results will help determine the moving program and are purely for reference.
The ideal way to find a job in Canada is to take advantage of one of the Express Entry immigration programs, which are designed for in-demand workers of various specialties. This option implies a long-term job, most likely - moving with the family and citizenship in the future. With its help, it is much easier to obtain an admission permit for a foreign specialist (LMIA), if it is required for a given vacancy. However, here it is also useful to find a place for yourself in advance and receive an invitation from the employer.
In order to better manage the migration flow, the Canadian authorities adopted the Express Entry program in 2015. On the one hand, it has complicated employment in the country, on the other hand, it has expanded opportunities for qualified specialists.
In order to participate in the program, you must first go through express entry: fill out a questionnaire that will determine if you meet the necessary requirements and will give you a certain number of points. The result is influenced by your skills, level of education and knowledge of languages, specialty, etc.
Your chances of getting a job directly depend on the number of points you earn. The program regularly selects candidates with the most points. They get the right to move to Canada.
At the same time, their profiles are available to all employers, for whom it is quite easy to choose the right one, because the candidates in the database are sorted according to the rating. Questionnaire data are received by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration Canada and are considered up to six months. After that, the information enters the Express Entry database and is stored there for one year. By the way, the language test and the nostrification of the diploma (if necessary) are carried out even before the application is submitted.
There are about 80 different immigration programs in Canada, most of them based on the Express Entry system. At the same time, most programs are provincial, that is, the selection takes place at the level of a separate province, and the final decision on entry is made by the federal agency. And one more feature: Quebec has its own programs, information about them can be found on the website of the provincial migration department.
There are three immigration programs based on Express Entry at the federal level:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
This is the main program for foreign immigrants. It is designed only for workers with demanded experience and knowledge. To participate, you must have at least one year of work experience in an in-demand specialty obtained within the last ten years, or an invitation from a local employer. It is also required to speak the language at a sufficient level and have an education that meets Canadian standards (checked by the ECA agency).
Age and the ability to quickly adapt in the country are also important. You will also need to pass a medical examination, provide a certificate of no criminal record, not qualify to move to Quebec (there is a separate program) and have enough funds for the first time.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
Program for highly qualified or licensed individual professionals (eg doctors). In this case, you will need to have at least two years of work experience in the specialty in the last five years, an invitation from a local employer or a qualification certificate issued in Canada, as well as good knowledge of the language.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
For professionals who previously worked in Canada. Work experience for the last three years must be at least 12 months. It is also important to know the language at a sufficient level and not apply for moving to Quebec.

By the way, the new requirements of immigration programs oblige employers who invite a foreigner to work for a long time to pay a one-time fee of $1000 for consideration of the application. Moreover, if the candidacy is not approved, the money will not be returned. Thus, the authorities make every effort to first provide jobs for local residents, and only then for foreigners.
You can get a job in Canada only by entering into an employment contract, and if the specialty involves membership in professional associations (for example, a doctor), you will also need a license. The next mandatory step is obtaining a permit to receive a foreigner, the Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which is processed by the employer. To this end, he sends a request to the nearest office of the Ministry of Human Resources and Skills Development (HRSDC). If the answer is positive, a work permit is issued.
There are a number of professional categories for which this document is not required. A detailed list can be seen here.
After an affirmative response from the ministry, the employer collects the following package of documents and sends it to the applicant for submission to the consulate at the place of residence:
There are several types of permit: for temporary work (on a regular work visa), for a permanent employee (under the Express Entry program), for students, entrepreneurs. Separately, there are permissions to work as a nanny or a nurse, as well as under the experience exchange program.
To obtain a work visa, you will need to contact the Canadian embassy in the nearest country (available in Moscow). The following documents are required to apply:
After you submit your documents, you will be given a referral for a medical examination. Be prepared for the fact that during the consideration of the case, the consul may call you for a personal conversation.
Please also note that, depending on the region, additional documents may be required. For example, in the province of Quebec, you need a Certificate of Consent for the Provision of Temporary Employment (Certificat d'acceptation du Quebec (CAQ) pour travail temporaire), which must be obtained from the Quebec Ministry of Immigration.
The Canadian government has compiled a list of the most in-demand professions in the country, which includes about 500 items. You can find the full list here. We will give the most relevant specialties that allow you to participate in the Skilled immigrants (Express Entry) program:
Medical workers: nurses, general practitioners, veterinarians, cardiologists, massage therapists, laboratory assistants, nutritionists, dentists, physiotherapists, orderlies, pharmacists.
Engineers and builders: mining, plumbers, geologists, mechanics, aerospace technology, petroleum, manufacturing, chemists, electrical engineers, roofers, masons, carpenters, tilers, welders, plasterers, architects.
Other professions: lawyers, biologists and oceanographers, meteorologists, managers of various fields, equipment operators, butchers, cooks, teachers, physicists, financial specialists, social workers, programmers.
According to Canadian Business, the most in-demand jobs include engineers, air traffic controllers, network computer analysts, administrators, medical assistants, and mining and forestry workers. There are also many job openings for handymen, sales representatives, accountants, business analysts and crane operators. This is also confirmed by the data on the issuance of entry permits through Express Entry, published in 2020.
We will look at just a few examples so that you understand what the process of finding a job in Canada consists of and how long it takes.
Vehicle driver
The country occupies a large area, and the railway network is poorly developed here. Therefore, there is always a need for drivers and truckers. It is not difficult for local residents to get such a position: it is enough to have a license and driving experience. For foreigners, everything is complicated by the need to take driving courses in the country and successfully pass an English exam (IELTS test - at least 4 or 5), for which they study for 3-4 months, master local terminology and traffic rules.
By the way, drivers here are paid very well. But not everyone can withstand such a rhythm: you will have to spend at least 10-12 hours behind the wheel (not to mention truckers), have excellent health and considerable experience. That is why the staff turnover is very high.
Welder
Due to the rapid development of the country's cities, it is an equally demanded profession, which is required both in the construction of skyscrapers and in the creation of underwater structures. But in order to work in the specialty, you need to get a certificate of training in Canada or work here for several years as a welding assistant. Proficiency in English is a must.
It is also important to be a generalist: to be able to work with both hand tools and modern automation. But on the other hand, a good welder with experience earns in Canada as a director of a small enterprise.
Farm workers
Although many countries do not require specific knowledge, in Canada you have two options: either you get a job as a laborer for low pay and a heavy work schedule, or with experience and relevant specialization, you take a higher position, like a veterinarian or an engineer, with a more attractive income. In both cases, a good knowledge of English is a must.
The minimum wage is a mandatory parameter in the Canadian economy, which is revised annually based on unemployment and other factors. There is no single indicator for the country - the level of the "minimum wage" varies depending on the province within $ 8.8-11.33 per hour (hereinafter, the amounts are given in US dollars). The highest rate in 2020 was in harsh Nunavut: a little over $12. Based on a 40-hour workweek, Canadians earn at least $1,500 per month.
There is also the average wage rate, which is $20.4/hour in Canada. That is, on average, a specialist here receives $ 3,540 before paying all taxes. Hourly rates vary significantly depending on age (after age 25 - an increase of almost 2 times), gender (men receive $ 2.6 per hour more), hours of work (at part-time rate $ 3.8 lower) and type of employment ( permanent employees receive $4.7 more).
In general, you can earn good money in all industries in Canada. Here, your income does not depend on the chosen field, but on skills and experience. Local authorities strive not to create social stratification, and therefore gradate wage rates depending on many factors that depend only on the employee.
The income tax rate in Canada depends on the level of wages and the specific province. On average, the minimum 15% - if the annual salary is not more than $35,000, and the maximum 33% with an income of $155,000. Additionally, there are contributions to the pension fund (99%, of which the employee and employer pay 50/50) and insurance premiums (4.51%, where 1.88% is paid by the employee and 2.63% by the employer).

As you can see, finding a job in Canada is not such an overwhelming task: there are many professions in demand, there are immigration programs. You only need experience, knowledge in areas relevant to the country, as well as significant efforts to collect all the documents, negotiate with the employer, master the language at the proper level and, if necessary, confirm your qualifications or undergo retraining. In return - more than adequate wages and the opportunity to live comfortably in a beautiful country.

One of the main things that interests potential immigrants, and even residents, is work in Canada. There are many questions: who is hired, how much is paid, where to look for a job, what are the available vacancies, and so on. An interesting fact: you can immigrate to Canada on your own without a job offer. We analyze this in detail as part of our course on independent immigration to Canada as intermediaries. Also, we cooperate with a company that provides various services related to job search in Canada, such as:

Every year, something changes. What features of working in Canada await you in 2022 after the coronavirus pandemic? This full article will answer all your questions:
The most popular and perhaps the most effective place to search for jobs and vacancies in Canada in 2022 is the Internet. There are many sites in Canada where many positions are fasted daily. Here are the most popular ones:
On each of these sites, you will find many legitimate job openings in Canada. By the way, JobBank is a government platform and most often it is through it that immigrants have the most real chances of being hired. For each individual position, it is highly recommended that you edit your resume so that it matches the position as closely as possible. As for the resume, we recommend that you go through our article "Resume in Canada: writing rules and techniques (with an example)".

It happens that immigrants face employment problems in Canada. For example, an employer may be hesitant to hire an immigrant who has recently arrived in Canada, even though they have extensive work experience in their home country. In this case, networking comes to the rescue. What is networking and how to use it in Canada? Networking is an activity aimed at using people in your circle of contacts to solve as quickly as possible not only the needs of life (find a job), but also business tasks (find clients, attract investors, etc.). How to find the right social circle? Below are some tips for networking in Canada.
Join a professional organization in your field. This way you will get to know colleagues and influencers, which can speed up your job search. You can find this kind of organization not only on popular social networks. networks like Facebook or LinkedIn, but also on the Meetup website, or download the popular Shapr mobile app. Who knows, maybe they will offer you the job of your dreams?
This advice may seem counterintuitive, but the more you volunteer, the sooner you will find a permanent job in your profession in Canada. As a volunteer, you expand your circle of acquaintances, fill up your resume with work experience in Canada and simply improve your karma, because Canadian employers pay special attention to volunteer experience. After all, the more you give, the more you get. In 2022, over 1 million Canadians have already volunteered!
It is important to remember that the main goal is to find “your” people, not just connections. The people you meet immediately upon arrival, and this is always a very difficult period, can become your good friends who will support you and help you settle in a new country. And, perhaps, as a nice addition, your new friends will remember you when they hear that someone is looking for an employee in their firm.
Job agencies are another good option for finding a job in Canada. This option is more suitable for students who are looking for a low-skilled job and do not want to bother with the search and waste time. Such agencies will do everything for you, all you need to do is submit your resume (which they will help you edit correctly, or even compose a new one from scratch) and wait for a call.
These agencies work with many employers and will find you a job in the shortest possible time. A big plus of such services is that you do not waste time or money when looking for a job, agencies provide this kind of service "for free" (most likely the employer will pay a commission for you or part of your salary will go to the agency's account).
There are a lot of working agencies in Canada. Just google recruitment agency in Canada and you will be able to explore many options.
As for employment agencies that can help you get settled if you do not live in Canada, we will talk about this below.
Many people can't afford to travel abroad simply for business or to discuss employment and future career opportunities. And many cannot afford to pay tuition fees for international students – Canadian universities can be expensive – or are not allowed to study. Most people are forced to search for a Canadian employer remotely in order to get a job offer. This is the hardest part of moving to Canada. And, unfortunately, this stage cannot be simplified.
Obviously, the easiest way to find an employer in Canada is if you have connections there. Do you have relatives or friends in Canada? Or does your friend have friends or relatives there? Can you use your connections to "break into the light" in Canada? Knowing the right people is, alas, the easiest way to secure yourself a job offer. Whether or not you receive this job offer depends on whether your future employer can obtain a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA, formerly LMO). An LMIA is an authorization from Employment and Social Development Canada to hire a foreign worker for a position that can be filled by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. And here the connections will no longer help. LMIAs are issued based on the needs of the Canadian economy. So if your friend knows a person who needs a new administrative assistant, but there are many unemployed administrative assistants in that part of Canada, then you are not likely to be lucky.
You can also leave your CV in our "Jobs" section, as we are actively read by Russian-speaking Canadian employers.
One of your best options is to contact several recruitment agencies, especially if you can find one or more that cater to your profession. Employers rely heavily on external recruitment companies, also called "headhunters" - to find talent. These agencies are usually paid by employers, so avoid companies that charge for services.
There are many agencies that target foreign workers, but there are many more that do not work with foreigners. Also, there are a lot of agencies that hire IT specialists outside of Canada, because. market position is very scarce. One of these is the VanHack agency.
The easiest way, but probably almost doomed to failure, is to use job search websites, as any Canadian would do. In Canada, there is which we talked about above. To increase your chances, you can offer your employer to work remotely (if possible) for a cheaper fee. We know of several cases where the employer was eventually impressed and sent a job offer.
Canadians have long used Job Bank to find jobs online, as the service is free for both employers and candidates. This is probably the most trusted online job resource, however, many employers do not post jobs on JobBank, especially if they work with a recruitment agency or use another online resource.
This social network is as close as possible to the professional network, which also has a job search section. But even if you don't use LinkedIn to find a job, you should sign up and create your own profile. Many employers use LinkedIn to screen potential clients, so a LinkedIn profile would be a very good addition to any job application you have.
Got a job offer? Congratulations! But now another question arose: should I take it? How can I find out more about the company and should I work for them? Fortunately, in the age of the Internet, all these things can be verified.
Before sending your resume at all, carefully review the job description. If the ad consists of 2-3 lines, then a logical person will assume that the ad and the company itself are not of the highest quality. Here's what an ideal job opening from a company that cares about its reputation should look like:
If any of the above is missing in the vacancy, this does not mean that the company is bad, but nevertheless it may be familiar.
On the GlassDoor website, former and current employees of companies share information about the company: they tell you what questions they had at the interview, how much certain positions earn, and most importantly, leave feedback about the company and management. Therefore, be sure to check if there is information about the company on this site.
You can also message current and former employees by contacting them via LinkedIn. All you need is to find a company in this social network.
Any company in Canada registers with Google Business, because without it, Google will not show the location of the company, and the place in the issue will not be the highest. Therefore, you will almost certainly be able to read customer reviews about a company on Google, and if the company's rating is below 3.5 stars, then this is a serious reason to think - is it worth it? If customers are so dissatisfied with the company, what are the chances that employees are happy with everything?

The Canadian labor market has performed well in recent years. The country creates 335,000 jobs annually and the unemployment rate is 5.8%, the lowest since 1976 years old. No wonder so many people dream of working in Canada. Let's take a look at the best and worst cities to work in Canada
Interestingly, small towns are catching up with metropolitan areas in terms of labor market growth. But still, as in all matters relating to the Canadian economy, provincial differences are palpable. For example, in the town of Barrie, Ontario, unemployment in March was at 8.8%, and in Quebec it was the lowest in the whole country - 3.6%.
Where to look for a job? Here is a list of the best and worst cities in Canada for employment.
Here are the top 10 strongest cities in the country for jobs, according to the BMO Labor Market Report 2022 Q2.
By the way, Canada's largest cities were in the middle of the group, with the exception of Vancouver, which made the top 10, and Edmonton and Ottawa, which are next to it, ranking 24th and 27th, respectively, out of 33 cities.

upon arrival in Canada, it is already literally 2-3 days. It often happens that newcomers spend all their savings on moving and other things, so work is needed now and immediately.Shop, waiter, cashier, coffee barista? as a rule, they hire native speakers, and there are enough local candidates for these positions, although after a month of searching, you may well get a job in these positions.I will list the most popular options where you will immediately be taken with open arms literally but on the first day, regardless of experience, appearance, knowledge of English and other factors.
The first popular job option for Russians and Ukrainians in Canada, especially women, is cleaning and cleaning services. There is a severe shortage of workers in this category, so this is one of the most popular options. There is no direct communication with clients and they pay quite normally for this kind of position ($14-20 per hour, if you're lucky). You are provided with all the equipment, various masks (if you work with chemicals), that is, you don’t have to worry about safety.
The second popular job option for Russians and Ukrainians in Canada, but for men, is construction and repair. Again, there is a severe shortage of people, and they take absolutely no experience and are ready to teach. Main vacancies:
And so on. For any construction position you will be called back immediately. They are ready to pay even in cash, but I would not recommend it, in this case the employer is not responsible for your safety. A lot of immigrants start by working on construction sites in Canada, and after 1-2 years of experience, they eventually start working for themselves (such people are called contactors - when you take an order for a certain amount and fulfill it), since the money for working with your hands in Canada is well paid. A familiar floor installer and another painter earn from $10,000 a month, although they started with a construction site without much knowledge of the language. One was a master of economics, the other was a lawyer.
The third popular job option for Russians and Ukrainians in Canada, which is also more suitable for men, is warehouses and moving services. Hard work, where you have to pull a lot. As a rule, people do not stay in such positions for a long time, therefore they are required always and everywhere. But as a temporary option can be considered.
Other general positions will take time and most likely an interview, which usually takes 2-4 weeks if your resume is considered at all.
By the way, you can find a job in Canada in just a couple of hours. How? Many shops, cafes and others, of course, publish positions online. Yes, that's bad luck, about 80% of the answers that they then receive are agencies or people from other countries without work visas. In order not to waste too much time, such establishments resort to the tactics of the last century - to hang a sign "NECESSARY WORKERS (HIRING)" on the window.
When you see such a poster, you can immediately go to a store/cafe and ask for a resume to be sent to a manager. And if you do this during typical working hours (from 9in the morning until 16:30), then most likely the manager will be there, which means you can immediately pass the interview. In the English term, this is called foot-in-the-door (foot in the door). This way of looking for a job in Canada is a big plus for both you and the employer. The employer sees that you are local and live in Canada, you know that they are ready to accept you almost immediately.
There are a lot of such posters in the center of Vancouver, as well as in shopping centers. According to the subscriber, three of the employers were ready to give a job and asked when they were ready to start, and all accepted the answer “tomorrow”. As a result, he chose for himself the most profitable position as a chef in a Mexican restaurant ($14/hour), his passion is a consultant at a Zara store ($12.5 per hour + 60% discount on all items in the store). All the managers asked were whether they could legally work in Canada and when they were ready to start. Nice way, isn't it?".
