Starting a Business

These tips are ideal for those who hope to start an ATV dealership. Read this article before you open up shop.

We provide some useful advice on opening an ATV dealership.

The Market for ATV Dealers

Demand for ATVs continues to grow. ATVs are popular because they are both fun and functional. They can be used for recreation, hunting, farming, ranching, industrial purposes and for safety patrols. ATVs offer significant advantages over larger vehicles. Notable ATV advantages include maneuverability, towing capabilities, ease of use, and all-weather compatibility.

With the ATV market booming, you can enroll in Bombardier Recreational Products' Can-Am ATV Dealer Program, the Honda ATV dealer program, the Polaris ATV dealer program, the CFMOTO ATV dealer program, the Can-Am ATV dealer program, the Yamaha ATV dealer program or become a dealer for Kawasaki, Kymco, Suzuki and many other ATV dealers. If you develop a plan and work hard, it's only a matter of time before you are selling four wheelers, three wheelers, dune buggies and sand rails from a business you can proudly call your own.

Tips for Generating a Top Quality ATV Dealership Business Plan

There is no right way to write an ATV dealership business plan but there are plenty of wrong ones. Despite the diversity that exists in business plan writing, there are several essential elements that good business plans simply must include.

Business plan software eliminates the guesswork, insulating your ATV dealership from the possibility of critical omissions. Robust software solutions incorporate best practices while streamlining the writing process, ensuring that your business plan reflects your company's commitment to quality.

To guide your search, we've compiled a list of business plan software packages, all of which have proven value for ATV dealership entrepreneurs.

Evaluate the Competition

  • Search for ATV Dealerships Near You

Before you open up shop, make sure you know what you will offer to your customers that provides a significant advantage over your competition's offering.

Learning More About the Industry

If you want to open an ATV dealership be sure to learn as much as you can from somebody who is already in the business. If you think your local competitors will give you advice, you're being overoptimistic. Why would they want to educate a future competitor?

However, an entrepreneur who owns an ATV dealership in a location that is not competitive to you may be willing to share their entrepreneurial wisdom with you, as long as they don't view you as a competitive threat. Indeed, many experienced entrepreneurs enjoy offering advice to startup entrepreneurs. Our estimate is that you may have to contact many business owners to find one who is willing to share his wisdom with you.

How do you find an ATV dealership owner who is willing to talk to you but doesn't live nearby?

Simple. Let your fingers do the walking by using the link below.

  • Get In Touch With ATV Dealership Owners

Why Buy an ATV Dealership?

As a rule, would-be startup owners are better off buying an existing ATV dealership. Yet many new entrepreneurs find it hard to resist the allure of an ATV dealership startup.

Financing and funding concerns ought to play a central role in your strategy. Commercial lenders are usually more inclined to fund acquisitions than startups.

Although there are a lot of factors to consider, the decision to buy a business to get acquisition capital almost always pays off.

Consider Franchising

You should know that your odds of thriving in your new business are much greater if you purchase a franchise instead of doing it all on your own.

Before you get too far along in your plan to open an ATV dealership, it's worthwhile to assess whether purchasing a franchise might help you avoid common entrepreneurial mistakes.

The link below gives you access to our franchise directory so you can see if there's a franchise opportunity for you. You might even find something that points you in a completely different direction.

Points to Consider Before Open Your Doors to The Public

The Truth About Starting an ATV Dealership

If you’re looking to get in on the Powersports industry boom that’s currently occurring across the country as more people look to get outside and out of their stuffy homes, you’ll have to act fast. That’s because this kind of demand isn’t going to last forever, and if you wait long enough, you might end up stuck with a business that you want nothing to do with.

It’s one of the reasons why we suggest that prospective Powersports business owners only enter the business if they have a real interest in the industry. Times might be great today, but will you have the patience and the capital to stay the course when times are tough? Because as everyone knows, tough times are often followed by the good, and if you can keep a level head you can turn that ATV hobby into a bonafide business that could last decades.

Resist Getting Emotionally Involved

It might be exciting when you first think about how to start an ATV dealership, but the real day-to-day of being an ATV dealer is hard work. You’ll have to be meticulous and smart with your money and your time, and even if things are going bad you’ll have to present positivity and leadership to your employees and partners. It’s great being your own boss and making the rules, but that’s because you’re putting the most at stake. If you can separate your emotions from the business itself, you’ll stand to make more level-headed choices and retain better judgment when it matters most.

 Bring in Smart, Determined People

Some people like to be the smartest person in the room. But the inevitable outcome of that approach is that there’s no one you can lean on when you need help. Real leaders know that it’s beneficial to surround themselves with smart, determined people that can really pitch in and contribute. Instead of being threatened by other smart people, they can be your sounding board, helping to provide savvy advice on financial, legal and market matters — and if you’re not around for the day they can help pick up the slack.

Prepare for Financial Challenges

They say that most businesses fail within the first year, and ATV dealers and startups are no exception. While you may be able to ride the wave of interest all the way to the bank if your timing is right or your market advantage is solid, starting a powersports business can be tough. If you make it out of your first year, consider yourself lucky. But once you’ve established that foothold, go for it in years two and beyond. Your business might not be a success for the first five years, but with grit and determination you’ll be able to surmount those financial challenges and come out on the other end a better ATV dealer for it.

Know When To Pivot

At the beginning of running your ATV dealership, you might be tempted to splurge under the false pretense of wanting to get out what you put in. But in these early stages, it’s all too easy to squander your finances chasing an idea gone wrong or trying to pretend that you’re more successful than you really are. If something isn’t working for you, it’s important to cut your losses and pivot as quickly as possible. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t allow for success and quick wins to come your way, but not many businesses can survive a few bad decisions upfront.

Are You Interested in This Type of Business?

To be successful in any type of business, you need to start it for the right reasons. If you just want to start a company for the money, you won’t be as successful. You want to be passionate about the products and services you offer.

Make sure you start an ATV dealership because you have an interest and passion for ATVs and the experience people have while using them for recreation, racing, or as a utility vehicle.

Another factor that may reveal how dedicated and passionate you are about owning a dealership is to ask yourself a simple question: If I had all the money I ever needed for the rest of my life, would I start an ATV dealership?

If you answered yes, then you do possess a passion for this type of business. If you answered no, then you are focused on the income and lifestyle a successful dealership can provide.

Naturally, a strong passion will drive success, and when problems appear, you’ll look for solutions to rectify the problem. If you’re not passionate about the business you are in, when problems occur, you’ll start thinking of ways to get rid of the business.

Is There A Demand For ATVs In The Area?

If there is no demand for ATVs in the area you’re planning to open, there is no reason to open there.

You may need to locate your dealership where there is demand, but keep in mind, if there are a lot of dealerships, you may have to compete in a saturated market. It’s tough to establish a dealership where there is little demand or a saturated market.

When you must compete against an established dealer, unless you offer something that isn’t available in the current market, it will be a challenge to gain any market share.

How Will You Compete?

A lot of businesses compete in terms of price to gain market share; others compete on value. Will you slash your prices? And if so, will you still be able to make a profit that will keep your dealership doors open? Or will the profit margin be too low for you to compete? This is something you need to consider when you create your business plan.

It would help your business if you could compete on price with added value, but you need to have a strong enough profit margin to do so.

What Brands Will You Offer?

Have you considered the brand of ATVs you will provide? There are many well-known brands on the market, and unless you open a used dealership, your new ATV will be from one manufacturer.

Do You Qualify To Become A Dealer?

To become an ATV authorized dealer, you need to apply and meet specific criteria. Think of a dealership like a fast-food franchise.

You need to run the business according to rules and regulations set by the company. You can’t open a storefront of your choosing and start selling and servicing ATVs.

You must play by the manufacturer’s rules. For more on this, see the resources below offering applications to start a Powersports dealership.

Can You Finance Your Dealership?

To run your dealership and stay in business, you need to finance the ATVs. Let’s do some math. If you have 150 ATVs on your lot to choose from, each averaging around $7,500, you’ll need over a million dollars for an inventory of that size.

The way to finance this is called “Floor Plan Financing,” which is a finance plan that allows for short-term financing. For example, you may pay $2.00 a day in interest on an ATV that costs you $7,500. That is one reason dealers want to sell as many vehicles they can to reduce the finance charges.

There are a lot of issues to consider when starting a business. The above were just a few considerations.

Interview with the oldest Polaris

dealer

Alexey Blokhin, General Director of the official Polaris dealer Atlant-Service (Moscow)

How long have you been a Polaris dealer?

We have been an authorized Polaris dealer since 1998. We were one of the first to work with this brand and we understand that we made the right choice, because today Polaris is the most stable brand and Distributor in the industry!

Where did you start?

We started with a small hall in a shopping complex, where 2 ATVs were displayed and 2 people worked. At that time, few people knew what an ATV was and how to drive it.

Who are you now?

Now the situation is completely different. We are the largest dealer in Russia. We have 2 motorcycle salons in Moscow and 1 equipment store. Our service was recognized as the best Polaris service center in 2017. Several hundred customers trust us to service their equipment. We are very active in our region - we regularly participate in sports events, conduct test drives of equipment, cooperate with the largest you-tube channels and quad-bloggers. We are also permanent partners and co-organizers of all federal events of the Distributor.

“You need to love what you do, create a community around you who are passionate about ATVs and snowmobiles, be an expert for your customers so that they always turn to you and trust your opinion.

What helped you reach these heights?

First of all, our active position. We try not to miss any opportunity to show our customers our product. We strive not only to advertise, but also to communicate live with customers, so we constantly hold events and test drives. And of course, the support of the Distributor and working conditions largely determine our success. We have a flexible payment system, we are provided with a commodity credit, there is a system of monetary compensation for advertising activities, which motivates us to advertise even more and more efficiently. And a lot of profitable offers for customers (SNOW CHECK, benefit on equipment at the end of the season, Polaris Finance 0% credit program), which, of course, gives us a constant influx of new calls and customers to the salons.

What advice would you give new dealers to reach the same high level?

You need to love your job, you need to create a community of people who are passionate about ATVs and snowmobiles around you, you need to be an expert and support for your customers in all matters, so that they always turn only to you and trust your opinion. You need to make sure that employees are constantly learning and improving their knowledge and skills in order to be the best in their region! The main thing is the personal involvement of everyone and responsibility for what you do! It is pleasant and interesting to work with the Polaris brand, therefore, in addition to commercial benefits, this business will give you a lot of pleasure and positive emotions every day!

“The main thing is everyone's personal involvement and responsibility for what you do!”

Join the world of sports and outdoor activities, make your work interesting and dynamic, open your own Polaris salon!

Polaris Sportsman 850 Touring Two-Piece ATV - 4x4 Club Magazine

ATV Club

August 25, 2010

Guess what the fifth shock is for? We give a hint: this part works in the suspension ... of the passenger seat ... Yes, ATVs have not yet had a seat with its own suspension. None other than one of the Polaris engineers took a ride on the main truck.

The Polaris Sportsman 850 Touring is a continuation of the single-seat model that debuted last year with the same engine. Fundamentally, the “850s” differ from their predecessors in a new frame with an unconventional layout of units, the rejection of the McPherson front suspension in favor of a two-lever scheme, electric power steering and other, no longer so noticeable solutions.

ROCKING CHAIR
The Touring has been slightly longer to increase stability when riding in two. The passenger seat is not just comfortable, it is like a home sofa. And the reason for this is the suspension strut under it. The words of our photographer, who is by no means a fan of ATVs, are indicative: “I am ready to go far on such an ottoman, and not just not to walk during the filming.” However, when the speed increased and the pits became larger, the passenger first complained that he was swayed like on a ship during a six-point storm, and then began to shout something about catapults. Here's one for you. But after studying the design, it turned out that the suspension strut is equipped with a spring adjustment. We twisted the nut, clamped the spring - and again Polaris carefully and gently drove the “second number”.

There is a dirt-proof compartment under the front trunk lid

The plastic fuel tank is located at the bottom, towards the front of the ATV. The engine is in the middle, and the variator is generally shifted back. All this is done to lower the center of gravity and excellent weight distribution along the axes. The skepticism expressed by the conservatives during the debut of the model about the location of the gas tank did not materialize. The single-seat version has been on sale for over a year, and no one has yet contacted the service about a leaking fuel tank. Although ... everything can be pierced with reinforcement, and not only durable plastic.

- The rear seat can be replaced with an accessory - a cargo box

- The drain plug located at the bottom of the CVT housing can be unscrewed with a coin

values. It does not respond to a sharp pressure of the gas with a separation of the front wheels, but at the same time it is powerful, like a heroic horse. Safety systems are connected to the engine - EBS engine braking and ADC descent assistance. These are not marketing gadgets, but useful and necessary things. Even for experienced pilots on steep descents, a small mistake when using the brakes easily leads to somersaults. It is checked up, and not only on personal experience.

Air filter is dressed in a standard stocking that protects from the dust

The standard bottom protection looks very impressive

The wheelbase of this model is slightly larger than the single

is independent of the independent independent pendants for the ability not to choke on pits can be given five, but they are tuned specifically for comfort, and not for jumping and other adrenaline outrages. The rear suspension uses an anti-roll bar with long struts. Both front and rear are adjustable spring preload - a thing that really works.

Brake control is extremely simple. Under the left hand is the lever of the combined brake, and under the right foot is the foot, which is responsible only for the rear axle brake. The mechanisms themselves are disk. In front they are installed in both hubs, and behind there is only one disk of impressive size on the right axle shaft. Why not two? Yes, because almost all utilitarians have a simple gearbox without a differential in the rear axle, so if one wheel slows down, the second one also slows down.

Radiator stands high and protected from branches by front grille mesh

Well, the most remarkable device here is the electric power steering with variable characteristics. It not only reduces the force on the steering wheel, it also protects the hands from impacts transmitted from the wheels, working as a damper.

So, the new Sportsman 850 Touring is a very comfortable touring ATV. He's like a limousine made on the basis of an SUV, and it's just a pity to see him covered in mud up to the steering wheel. And it makes little sense to check the limit of its patency on unsteady soils, where weight is the most important thing. After all, the “athlete” with this case is like a good person, who should have a lot. So let other models storm the swamps, and on this we will travel in comfort and cleanliness.
