Throughout this tuturial, I am going to show/explain how to properly clean a K&N.
Most people say that K&N's are nothing but dirt suckers, but if you keep them cleaned and oiled, they are very good filters. The most important thing about the K&N is the oil that you put on. The oil on a K&N is what stops the dirt. If there is too much or too little oil, you will not be using your K&N to its full potential. Here are the steps to follow when cleaning your K&N.
1) Remove your filter from your bike.
2) Remove and prefilters or outerwares that you may have
3) Bring your filter to your kitchen sink and generesly spray K&N filter clean on it. (Always uyse a K&N Recharger kit to clean your filter)
4) Let it sit in the sink for about 10-15 minutes.
5)Then grab the little hose thing that your sink has, turn the water on cold and start rinsing from the inside out. You dont wanna push any dirt farther into the filter. Make sure you get all of the cleaner out.
6) Examine your filter and make sure it looks like the first picture below. If it doesnt, do steps 3-5 again.
7) Allow you filter to dry overnight in a location that is not going to let dirt or dust get on the filter. (Do not use compressed air to dry it. The force will hurt the gauze)
8) After your filter is complely dried, get your can of K&N oil. (The areasol works alot better than the other stuff). Then spray the filter from about 6inches away while slowly turning the filter and lightley overlapping the last streak. Do that for the entire filter. Let that dry and soak for about 1/2 hour.
9) After 1/2 hour, come back and examine your filter. If there is white spots, lightley spray more oil on there and wait another 1/2 hour.
10) Take a paper towel and try to get the excess oil off of the filter by dabbing the towel on the filter. Then once your filter looks like the second picture below, you are good to go.
11) Put you pre-filter back on and re-install the filter and go riding!!

I've read some K&N instructions before, and it said you can use some dish soaps to clean your K&N. Klotz makes the proper stuff for K&N filters also.

I WAS SPONSERED FOR A FEW YEARS BY K+N IN MY NHRA SC DRAGSTER, AND I WAS TOLD BY ONE OF THE TOP TECHS THERE THAT A LITTLE DISH SOAP SHOULD BE SUFFICIANT TO GET THE DIRT AND GRIME OUT, BUT THE IMPORTANT PART IS PUTTING THE OIL BACK ON. AND ONLY USING K+N OIL MADE FOR THEIR FILTERS.

Almost all the bikes we work on ( harleys) have a K&N filter on them. About year ago one of my guys forgot to tell me where out of the cleaner. I used simple green cleaner and have never bought the K&N cleaner since. It works flawlessly and will not having you choking of the fumes like the K&N cleaner.

my quad came with a k and n and im more of a foam guy. i just use dish soap and it works fine. and since i dont have k &n oil, i just use foam filter oil and i never have any problems, im just too broke to go out and buy k&n filter oil, and i want to replace it with foam soon anyways. its tacky oil, its going to stop the dirt. and it has for the past year.

The main function of the zero resistance filter, like any other air filter, is to clean the air and protect the engine from dirt entering it. But many filters, especially paper filters, while providing good cleaning, cause the motor to lose power, because dense paper elements have great resistance to air flow.
Nulevik is an excellent replacement for the standard consumables. It has a more complex design, which allows you to minimize the intake resistance and increase power, while its filtering capacity does not decrease, which helps protect systems from pollution, and the engine from wear. Nulevik helps to avoid frequent replacement, as happens with standard filters, which have to be changed every 8000-12000 km. Special means for its cleaning allow you to clean the filter and restore its cleaning properties.
In the world market, the American company K&N stands out among the main manufacturers of zero filters.
K&N was founded in California in 1969 and introduced its new invention, reusable filters, to the market. Since then, thanks to the improvement of technology, the company has been the world's leading manufacturer of cleanable air filters and air intake systems (air filter box). The company's product range includes various consumables that are designed for car engines, motorcycles and other industrial engines. The basic tenet of the K&N Filters engineering philosophy is to create a filter that delivers the benefits of increased engine performance, cost savings from reduced gas consumption, financial benefits from long life, and environmental benefits. Products include more than 3700 positions, while it is constantly increasing, thanks to new products. And due to the increase in global demand for cars and motorcycles in the future, K / N plans to become one of the main suppliers of consumables to the factories of automotive manufacturers.
The company produces high quality "Made in USA" standard oil and air filters, zero filters and their special series (Harley-Davidson, Off-Road, etc.), air intakes and care products.
Standard air filters KH are designed to clean the streams from fine road dust and dirt, are made of pleated cotton material, which prolongs the life of the consumable, and its multi-layer allows for even better purification of the air stream. They fit perfectly with the standard air filter box, and, if necessary, are equipped with gaskets for precise fixation. Such consumables are disposable and require replacement as they become dirty.
The company also offers its branded air intakes for V-Twin motorcycles and sport ATVs.
The AirCharger air system for Harley-Davidson motorcycles improves the look of the bike, making it more aggressive and increasing engine performance. The system consists of a small air filter, a high-strength aluminum tube and a ventilation system.
Harley-Davidson's Street Metal Series, featuring an aluminum base plate, oversized air filter and mirrored cover, ensures a beautiful look and smooth engine performance.
The RK range for Harley-Davidson with a small filter and an aluminum base plate is designed for increased power and long service intervals.
The chrome RK series is perfect for cruisers, it will make your bike stand out, and the engine will work crisp and productive.
AirCharger UTV air intakes are designed specifically for motorcycles that are used on off-road and in extreme conditions. The AirCharger ATV is designed specifically for racing and sports. Using high-precision flow technology, the company has developed a high-pressure aluminum heat-shielded bushing that provides protection and high-flowing performance in racing conditions.
K&N Zero Filters
Among the air filters, a special series stands out - filters of zero resistance. They have low air resistance. Such an air vent looks very similar to paper, but has a number of differences. Its outer surface is reinforced with a steel mesh, which perfectly protects the filter element from mechanical damage. Beneath the mesh is an inner layer made of high tenacity cotton fiber with a unique structure. The fiber consists of several layers (from 4 to 6 depending on the design), and has the main function of air filtration. Such a device helps the nulevik perfectly retain small particles in the environment.
The company's product range includes a line of air filters for motorcycles brand Harley-Davidson (eg K&N HD-1208 for Harley-Davidson XR1200X -08-12), which can improve the performance of the motor.
Sport bike high-flow air filters are reusable, wide-surface pleated air filters ideal for racing conditions, filtering high airflows and increasing power. (ex. K&N HA-1008 for Honda CBR1000RR 08-16).
Off-Road offers filters for motocross, enduro and quad bikes. Such a washable filter perfectly protects against off-road pollution, allowing you to increase the power of equipment (for example, K&N KA-1203 for Kawasaki KLX125, Suzuki DRZ125). All zero air filters are easy to install and come pre-lubricated with a special compound.
Like the foam filter, the nulevik needs to be washed and treated with a special solution. For the care of reusable air filters, the company offers the K&N Recharger Professional Care Kit (355ml Cleaner and 204ml Impregnation Oil Spray). This cleaning and lubricating kit effectively removes dirt and dried oil from the surface of the air filter without damaging the cotton material. The special composition of the impregnating lubricant allows you to trap fine particles of road dust, reliably protecting the engine. It is strongly not recommended to use other zero resistance filter cleaning kits as this may damage the cotton material. To clean a dirty nulevik, spray KN Air Filter Cleaner and Degreaser on both sides of the filter and let it soak for 10 minutes, do not allow the product to dry completely. Next, rinse the air filter with cool water, thoroughly rinse off all dirt. If all the dirt is not completely removed, repeat the procedure. Allow the filter to dry after washing. Do not start oiling until the filter is completely dry, otherwise lumps will form. The unique formula of the impregnation oil can significantly improve the quality of microparticle filtration, and also contributes to the formation of an outer layer of large dirt particles, which further help air filtration by retaining finer dust fractions. To impregnate, spray the aerosol evenly over the filter on each side. After the grease dries, coat the bright areas again. Allow the filter to dry for 20 minutes, after which it will be ready for installation. Remember to check it regularly for contaminants that can noticeably impair the performance of your motor. Typically, the service life of nulls with proper care is up to 16000km .
The American company KN offers its customers various types of oil filters and reusable filters of zero resistance, as well as air intakes. All products have many awards and have proven themselves in various racing competitions.
Original air filters KH are produced in the USA. In Russia, filters are sold through authorized dealers, including the Moto-stock store. Our catalog contains zero bikes for most motorcycles of two series: for urban use and for participation in competitions.
The standard KN air filters for everyday urban use are perfect for any motorcycle, reliably protecting the engine from dirt and dust particles, reducing fuel consumption and increasing engine power.
You can choose and buy a K&N filter for a motorcycle in the motorcycle parts catalog on the website moto-stock.ru. To order delivery within Russia, add the product to the basket and place an order.
For combustion, gasoline in the carburetor chambers must be mixed with oxygen. Oxygen enters the carburetor, passing through the air filter, and the gasoline-air mixture enters the combustion chamber of the ATV engine.
Let's imagine what happens when the air filter is clogged: less air enters the carburetor, the fuel mixture is enriched with gasoline, fuel consumption increases, there is a loss of power at low speeds, carbon deposits increase in the combustion chambers, there are difficulties in tuning the carburetor.
The main source of air filter clogging is dust. An ATV is an off-road vehicle, and therefore it is not difficult to imagine what happens to the air filter after 500 km. run.
Of course, it all depends on the driving style, and it is very difficult to find an average mileage after which you need to pay attention to the air filter. I can only say that cleaning the filter should be done as often as possible, because the health of the ATV engine directly depends on this.
After trips - swims, checking the air filter is mandatory.
During operation, you will calculate the sequence of checks yourself, based on your driving style.
The air filter housing on an ATV is usually located under the seat, the cover is attached with 4-5 bolts. We need to unscrew the bolts, remove the cover and remove the filter element.
The filter is usually made of foam and impregnated with a special liquid. There are also dry filters made of paper (blowing with air under pressure or changing to new ones), but, as a rule, very rarely, so we'll talk about washing and cleaning the foam air filter.
Basically, 3 cleaning methods are used:
When using any of the above methods, after washing the filter element, do not forget to clean the air filter housing itself from contamination.
1) Flushing the filter with special liquids (rarely used due to high cost)
2) Flushing the filter in gasoline. It is very simple to perform, pour 0.5 liters of gasoline into the container, immerse the filter in the container, rinse and wring out. Repeat the procedure several times. Then dry the filter and saturate it with a special agent or ordinary two-stroke oil, transmission oil is also suitable. The downside of this procedure is that some types of foam rubber are exposed to gasoline, breaking down, foam rubber in the form of small pieces gets into the carburetor and, accordingly, gives us a lot of trouble disassembling and cleaning the carburetor.
3) Washing the filter with water and powder or any dish detergent. The most humane method for foam rubber 🙂 and, as practice shows, this method allows you to most effectively get rid of pollution.
Stir the powder or detergent in water, carefully wash the filter, then rinse it thoroughly in running water.
