ATVs are versatile pieces of equipment with a whole lot of utility beyond what you might immediately expect. For example, with the right attachment, you can use your ATV to double as a lawn mower!

Of course, it’s not always advisable to do so. While ATVs can be used for cutting grass, they were not specifically designed to do so. This means you need to make sure the circumstances are right before you start warming up your ATV for your grass cutting duties.

The benefits are that cutting grass with your ATV will save you money (you won’t need to purchase a riding mower), will drive faster than a standard mower and will be more capable of cutting thick, tall vegetation. However, it will cause more damage to the grass, can be harder to maneuver in some circumstances and will give you a real workout to your hands and wrists.

Ultimately, if you need a well-manicured, pristine lawn, you’re going to want to use a conventional or riding lawn mower versus an ATV. But if you’re out in the country and are looking for quick, economical options and aesthetics aren’t important, using the ATV can be highly beneficial.

Your options for ATV lawn mowing

Before you pick the specific type of mower attachment you’re going to use, you’ll need to figure out how you want to mount the mower.

Example of a Front Mount attachment for your ATV. Image owned by
  • Frontal mount attachments have a mowing deck that goes on the front of the ATV. The benefit is that they offer greater visibility for mowing, but the drawback is that they are not as versatile as some other options.
Example of a Pull Behind attachment for your ATV. Image owned by Central Wisconsin Powersports
  • Pull behind lawn mower attachments are perhaps the most popular. You tow these mowers along as you drive. Just make sure they fit within your ATV’s towing capacity.
  • Center mount mower attachments are the least common, as they attach to the underside of the ATV and cut at the side or front. They’re best for ATVs that need lighter attachments.

Once you’ve decided where you want to mount your mower, you can move on to choosing the category of mower you’ll work with.

Rough cutting mowers

These mowers are simply designed to get the job done without a whole lot of care for the aesthetics. They’ll cut through grass quickly, especially on rough terrain, but won’t win you many landscaping awards.

Example of a Flail mower attachment for your ATV. Image owned by
  • Flail mowers: Flail mowers are designed for particularly rough terrain and thick grass. They feature blades on a horizontal roller that turn on their own pivot individually. The design allows you to trim fairly low to the ground. You can purchase front-mounted flail mowers if you wish.
Example of a rotary mower attachment for your ATV. Image owned by Titan Attachments
  • Rotary motor: This is a more traditional style of motor, featuring blades on the deck or horizontally to the ground rotating parallel to each other. They’re able to cut thick, tough grass.
  • Shredders: Shredders are similar to flail mowers, but have another cutting bar to help mulch up larger areas.

  • Trimmers: Trimmers are standard lawn trimmers but designed for harsher environments. They feature a large cutting line and swinging motion, ideal for cutting around shrubberies.

Finish mowers

If you’re a little more concerned with the appearance of your grass, finish mowers will help you get a cleaner cut. They’re no substitute for a riding or pushing lawn mower in terms of finesse, but they are popular options for ATV enthusiasts who want an okay-looking result for their grass that doesn’t need as much maintenance.

Example of a Reel mower attachment for your ATV. Image owned by Cottage Craft Works
  • Reel mowers: These mowers have curved glades attached to the wheels that cut while they turn. It’s ideal for grass that is easy to mow or is finer in texture, and for people who want a bit more of a finished appearance.
  • Rotary blade: These mowers allow you to go deeper in customizing the depth and precision with which you cut your grass.

Other things to know

Keep in mind that you’ll need to install your mower attachment, so it’s important to review the manuals both for the attachment and for your ATV so you can get it done safely and correctly.

In general, the cost of the attachment will run you anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on the type of attachment you choose and where you purchase it from. This will still be cheaper than purchasing a riding mower in most cases, but it is an extra expense that’s worth considering, and the mower attachment will need at least some level of ongoing maintenance to ensure continued reliable performance.

About the Rammy ATV Lawn Mower 120

The Rammy Lawn Mower 120 ATV is an efficient lawn mower for cutting grass and hay. As a front mount mower, it gives you maximum visibility and maneuverability.

To raise or lower the cutting height, you adjust the solid rear roller and front caster wheels. This lets you adjust the mowing height anywhere between 3/4 inches to 4 inches.

The Rammy lawn mower also includes side shift as standard equipment. This kit allows the lawnmower to shift 12.5 inches to the left or right of center.

The Rammy Lawn Mower mounts to your ATV using its universal snowplow bracket. However, your ATV needs a winch to raise and lower the cutter between mowing and transport positions. We also recommend using about 100 lb of ballast weight on the rear rack of your ATV, to offset the added weight of the Rammy.

Additionally, you can tighten your front springs (if adjustable), as well as your front tire pressures, to help alleviate the extra weight on the suspension. If your ATV has a soft front suspension, it would benefit from having heavy duty springs or spring inserts installed.

As a side note, the ATV only supports the Rammy’s weight in transport position. While mowing the weight of the lawn mower is on the ground.

Brush Cutter Conversion Kit

There is a $799 brush cutter conversion kit available for the Rammy Lawn Mower (kit #74131291). This consists of 3 new blade hubs with brush cutting blades, a front mounted spring loaded safety flap, and a bull bar / tree pusher.

The brush cutter and lawn mower use the same frame, engine, and transmission, so those don’t need to be converted.

Rammy Mowers

Rammy mowers are manufactured in Finland and are made with quality and efficiency in mind. As a front mount ATV lawn mower, you don’t flatten the grass before mowing. This gives you a better and more consistent cut, without leaving grass trails where your tires are.

We also offer the Rammy ATV Brush Cutter and the Rammy ATV Flail Mower, which are designed to handle different jobs.

Is it possible to ride ATVs in winter?

Many people wonder if it is possible to ride ATVs in winter. In fact, it turns out that lovers of a sports lifestyle choose a motorcycle for the summer, and a snowmobile for the winter. But there are also those who manage to use ATVs all year round, regardless of weather conditions. A dose of adrenaline and saving space in the garage, as well as budget funds for two types of equipment, are the main reasons for this approach. Each type of transport also requires a separate technical inspection and a permit to drive.

But if you are wondering whether it is worth riding an ATV in winter, take care of its proper operation and preparatory work for it. There is nothing complicated about this, and such preparation is not much different from preparing a motorcycle. Let's consider in more detail.

The ATV is a kind of hybrid of a tractor and a motorcycle, that is, a motorcycle engine is bolted to the tractor chassis. Engine preparation comes down to adjusting the carburetors (if the engine is carbureted) to a low temperature and changing the oil to "winter", that is, with improved starting characteristics in cold weather.

For the vast majority of ATVs, the instructions require the use of motorcycle oil with a viscosity of SAE 10W-40 and a JASO MA quality level. Usually it is called semi-synthetics, and it is considered efficient up to a temperature of -20 ° C, which is clearly not enough for winter operation in the middle lane, to say nothing of Siberia and the North. Therefore, before winter, even if the oil has not worked out the required resource, we ruthlessly change it to a fully synthetic one with an extended temperature range, for example: Liqui Moly ATV 4T Motoroil 5W-50. This lubricating fluid meets improved cold start temperatures and is able to resist overheating. This phenomenon may surprise many when riding an ATV in winter, but in fact it turns out that it is not so rare. Occurs when skidding in the snow, so this must be taken into account in advance.

Life hack:

There are two more specific winter problems with the ATV engine when driving:

  • The first one is solved as it arises. When driving for a long time on loose snow in cold weather, the air filter becomes clogged with snow dust, and the engine stalls. It is enough to shake out the filter, and the engine will be restored. The main thing is to be aware of a potential problem in order to fix it right away.
  • The second problem needs prevention. The fact is that in the lower part, under the engine, the breathers of the gearbox, variator and motor are brought out. These are long plastic tubes that overlap due to freezing of water condensate in frosty times. As a result, the pressure in the crankcases rises, and oil may be squeezed out. Prevention consists in treating the tubes with Liqui Moly Silicon-Spray, which will prevent the accumulation of ice. To solve a problem that has already arisen, you can use the Anti-ice Liqui Moly defroster. The same alcohol liquid will help unlock the throttle and other controls if they are not equipped with heating. By the way, the brake mechanisms can also freeze, especially in the parking lot after a tempo ride.

Cooling system.

In addition, in order to ride an ATV in the winter, you should pay attention to the liquid cooling system. It may be necessary to replace the antifreeze with a more frost-resistant one. We recommend using Liqui Moly Kuhlerfrostschutz KFS 12++, a concentrate that should be diluted 2:1 with water (product and water). Such a mixture can only freeze at temperatures below -60 °C. Hence the conclusion that such a reserve will not interfere even in the Moscow region.

She does not need special arrangements. It is advisable to change the oil in the bridges to fully synthetic, if you have not already done so. Motorcycle synthetics are excellent for increased loads - Motorbike Gear Oil VS 75W-140, if such oil is allowed in the instruction manual. Anthers on CV joints must be regularly treated with silicone so that they do not lose elasticity in frost. The chain in winter conditions needs to be processed less often and you can use the same chain lubricants as in summer, for example: Motorbike Kettenspray Enduro.

Change old brake fluid ruthlessly in winter for ATV riding. The accumulated water insidiously freezes in the brake machines and working cylinders. It happens, as always, suddenly, and you already know what happens when the brakes fail. Brake Fluid DOT 5.1 has good low-temperature qualities. It remains fluid at temperatures even below -50 °C, and it is not for nothing that travelers in the Arctic latitudes use it.

Rarely does anyone on an ATV change tires to winter tires, considering the usual mud option suitable for winter conditions. However, on clear ice, rough off-road tires are completely helpless. The situation can be improved by studding large tread blocks with cargo studs. Such services are provided by both some tire shops and cargo services. You can also “cut” the rubber into small lamellas using a grinder or a special device, but this is a very laborious and literally dirty event.

In order for ATV riding in winter to be normal, you should also pay attention to the winch, as the only means that can pull you out of snow captivity. To do this, it is necessary to properly service the structural element even before the onset of winter time in accordance with the instructions attached to it. To do this, it is necessary to change the lubricant to a low-temperature one and remove water if it has entered the gearbox. For the latter, Liqui Moly Marine Winschfett marine waterproof synthetic lubricant with Teflon is optimal. Its temperature range allows you to use the winch down to -35 ° C, and one tube is just enough. Electronic-Spray contact lubricant is well suited for servicing electrical contacts and solenoids, it will also save you from freezing.

Fuel system.

Pay attention to the fuel system as well. Both carburetor and injection systems need maintenance, for which Motorbike 4T-Bike-Additiv is well suited. It cleans the system of carbon deposits, makes it easier to start the engine, improves traction and protects against corrosion.

ATV with proper care, will give you pleasure in both summer and winter.
