Checking automatic transmission solenoids: what you need to know

To begin with, the automatic transmission solenoid is actually a solenoid regulator valve. The main task is the timely opening and closing of the oil channel, through which the working transmission fluid ATF is supplied under pressure.

It is important to understand that the solenoids of the automatic transmission, like any other devices, have a limited service life, may malfunction or fail under certain conditions. Next, we will consider what malfunctions of the solenoids often occur, what to do in this situation and how to check the automatic transmission solenoids for operability

Solenoid: how to check and why this element fails

So, the operation of the automatic transmission solenoids is controlled by the automatic transmission ECU. The control unit constantly sends pulse signals of a certain frequency to the valve. In simple words, the solenoid actually controls the oil pressure, which, in turn, is the working fluid in the machine's device.

It is through the oil that torque is transmitted to the gas turbine engine, gear shifting is carried out, the torque converter is unlocked, etc. It turns out that the automatic transmission solenoid controls the modes of the automatic transmission. The first solenoids replaced mechanical devices back in the 80s and have since been actively used in automatic transmissions.

  • Simply put, a solenoid is a device where a metal rod is wrapped in a spiral through which direct current flows. The rod in the housing is movable, when the current is applied to the spiral, this causes the rod to move from the end of the spiral to its beginning.

Also in the device of such a solenoid (electrovalve) there is a spring, which by force returns the rod to a predetermined position. Without going into details, the function of the solenoid is to block or open the transmission oil passage.

The solenoids are located in the valve body (hydraulic valve plate, automatic transmission valve block) and inserted into the channel, fixed with a bolt and a clamping spring. A cable or wiring connector is also attached to the solenoid for connection to the control unit (automatic transmission ECU).

In fact, the solenoid connects the hydraulics and electronics. Modern versions of machines have at least four solenoid valves. The total number depends on how many speeds this or that box received, how structurally complex it is, etc.

  • Please note that often problems in the operation of the automatic transmission are associated with a wiring failure, that is, the computer simply loses contact with the valve and the machine cannot work normally. It is also not uncommon for the solenoid itself to fail. When checking, it is important to consider what type of device is used on a particular automatic transmission, since there are several types of solenoids.

Types of box solenoids - automatic

If the first solenoids worked on the principle of "opening / closing", then in the future the device evolved, turning into a hydraulic valve. In short, regulator solenoids can be ball and spool (they have a valve - spool).

The solenoid received a separate oil passage and a ball valve to open and close this additional passage. Subsequent design improvements made it possible to create several channels that are separately blocked by ball valves.

Later, solenoids also appeared - regulators (electric regulator), reminiscent of a valve in design. In such a device, everything depends on the frequency of the ECU pulse, as a result of which the internal curved section of the solenoid partially opens or closes.

It is also possible to single out the difference between solenoids both in design and purpose. For example, linear (proportional), which allow you to change individual solenoids without replacing the entire valve body. Type VFS (Variable Force Solenoid) is structurally simple, but more difficult to manage, has a smaller resource than linear counterparts.

EPC solenoids (LPC, Line Pressure Control, linear pressure valve) are distinguished by their functional purpose. This is the "main" valve that distributes fluid to the remaining channels. There is also a TCC valve, as it is responsible for blocking the torque converter clutch.

By the way, this solenoid is the first to fail in many automatic transmissions, since heated and contaminated oil from the gas turbine engine flows through it. You can also note the shift solenoid (switch). The element is responsible for the inclusion of gears "up" and "down", etc.

Frequent malfunctions of automatic transmission solenoids: check and repair

First of all, the condition and quality of the ATF oil directly affects the life of the solenoids. A common problem is their jamming as a result of the fact that, together with dirty oil, metal chips, dust from friction adjustments get inside the device, oil deposits accumulate in the channels, etc.

Often the cold valve works normally, but the hot one starts to freeze. To get rid of the problem, the solenoid should be washed in cleaners or changed.

Another solenoid may not hold pressure, oil leaks occur. If the PWM valve type is used, the ECU is able to partially redistribute the load to other valves. However, this is a temporary measure, that is, after a short period, repairs will be required.

Other elements also suffer, as the increase in loads leads to wear of their plungers and channels. The result is cracks in the housing, weakening of the springs, a decrease in the resistance of the solenoid winding, etc.

One way or another, most often the solenoid becomes unusable due to wear:

  • bushings;
  • manifold;
  • valves;
  • plunger;
  • ball;

The plunger becomes contaminated with the same metal particles and deposits in the oil, then wedging occurs, after which the bushings and valves are destroyed. Taking into account the fact that the service life of solenoids is usually no more than 400 thousand km, and the average resource is limited to 150-200 thousand, you should be prepared in advance to replace elements on these runs.

Moreover, today hydraulic plate valves have become more complex and demanding on oil quality. This means that the automatic transmission fluid and oil filters in the machine must be changed regularly, avoiding the creation of an abrasive effect.

How to check and replace the automatic transmission solenoids

The appearance of jerks, kicks, slipping of the automatic transmission, delays in shifts, the absence of any gears or a harder operation of the machine may indicate that the solenoids are malfunctioning or partially / completely Broke down.

The presence of chips on the dipstick or in the sump, heavy ATP contamination of the oil, its cloudiness is also an additional sign of problems with the valve body valves.

To understand which solenoid is not working, you need to take into account the features of the device of a particular automatic transmission. If the solenoids are responsible for the speeds and control of the torque converter, then, for example, there are 4 solenoids in a 4-speed gearbox.

One is responsible for speeds 1 and 2, the second for speeds 3 and 4, the third for the operation of the torque converter, while the fourth for the operation of the brake band. It is quite obvious that if there are problems and failures with the inclusion of gears 2 and 3, this indicates problems with this solenoid.

Also, when automatic transmission shocks and automatic transmission jerks appear, the A / T lamp often lights up on the panel, which indicates problems in the transmission. In such a situation, you need to check the hydraulic unit.

The solenoids themselves are tested for resistance. To do this, 12V voltage must be applied to the valve. In the event that the solenoid has remained operational, the valve makes a characteristic click.

We also recommend reading the article on what to do if the reverse gear in the automatic transmission is missing. In this article, you will learn why the reverse speed does not turn on in the automatic box, as well as how to detect and fix this problem.

If there is no click, this means that contamination or damage has occurred. To begin with, you can blow out the valve with pressurized air while applying voltage to it. Normally, air should pass through the element.

If air does not pass, then replace the solenoid or repair. Repair of solenoids is possible only if the design is collapsible. In this case, it is possible to replace the winding, rinse the parts separately with a cleaner, and then reassemble the device.

Next, check the solenoid and reinstall if satisfactory. However, the problem often lies in the fact that many automatic transmissions today have non-separable valves.

It turns out that if air and purifiers do not help, and also the ultrasonic bath does not give results, the device only needs to be changed. The replacement of the automatic transmission solenoid itself is quite simple. The main thing is to remove the valve body, disconnect the solenoid and remove it from the valve plate. After the new element is installed in place and the assembly is carried out in the reverse order.

To summarize

As you can see, the solenoid is an important element in the automatic transmission device. In this case, the failure of these valve body valves disrupts the operation of the entire automatic transmission. Often, the main problem is the natural wear of the solenoids or their contamination.

We also recommend reading the article about what an automatic transmission brake band is. From this article you will learn about what the automatic transmission brake band is for and what functions it performs.

Also in some cases it is recommended to flush the valve body and / or automatic transmission before changing the oil if signs and symptoms of persistent dirt and deposits are already noticeable.

The winch used on ATVs, for many years of use by fans to wallow in the mud, has acquired the status of indispensable. Therefore, the idea has ripened to get to know her better. Now we will look at what varieties our winches have: WARN, T-Max. And also we will conduct a lesson of a detailed description and a visual demonstration of installing a winch on an ATV with a video with your own hands.

In many cases, pioneer drivers go to places where help is not forthcoming. In many cases, the wheel extensions help out when passing through swampy swamps.

Let's imagine the following situation: you are alone, somewhere far away in the forest, many kilometers from home, in a deep puddle, there is no help.

ATV has a fairly large weight, so pulling it out alone is unlikely to succeed. So what are you going to do? Walk for help? Or try to pull yourself out? Where you can carry half a day and, as a result, to no avail leave the place of drowning on foot. At this moment, the winch is your salvation. Attach one end to a tree, only to damage the tree as little as possible, because nature needs to be protected, or for anything else that confidently stands still, press the button and the job is done. She coped with this task in two ways. A winch is a truly indispensable accessory on an ATV. If you are a deep mud rider, consider installation of a radiator extension , it saves well from pollution and helps to cool the engine.

The principle of operation of winches

Very simple - before they were of a mechanical type, they had to be turned by hand, now this principle is a thing of the past, and traction occurs due to the gear device and torque. The drum winds the cable onto itself through the gearbox, the car slowly crawls out of the mud.
Before purchasing a quadric, think carefully about where you will use it. If, nevertheless, in bad road conditions, then do not spare the money, put a winch and at the same time , install the snorkel , and you can know for sure that it will save you sooner or later. But which one to choose, we will consider further!

How to choose our winch?

First of all, you need to know the volume and power of the engine. Under these characteristics, your winch is selected, which you install on an ATV.

When choosing, pay attention to the power of the electric motor, the type of gearbox, which control, the type of cable and its size, and of course, the overall dimensions.

Recently, almost all winches are equipped with battery-powered electric motors. This moment will save you when installing the snow plow , since it will be easy and convenient to use the plow with an electric winch, and why look and read the link.

The winch is controlled very simply, a young child can handle it, it happens on the steering wheel of an ATV using a button. With the exception of some of the more expensive ones, they are controlled by a radio joystick.

Steel cable for winch

Synthetic rope

Cables are made of steel and synthetic, approximately 15 meters long. It is probably better to use synthetics, they are lighter and more elastic than steel, they are not subject to rust, they can withstand a load of up to three tons, they are the safest in case of a rush.
Thinking about choosing a company and which winch will be more reliable on an ATV?

Electric winch companies

Everyone wants to choose the necessary accessory the first time and for a long time, but unfortunately not everyone succeeds and not every time. There are many manufacturers on the market, each with a different price and, accordingly, quality. There are also many variations of winches, varying in size and power, suitable for different types of ATVs. Now let's take a look at some of the most common examples.

Winch WARN

WARN winch

According to customer reviews, the most high-tech and reliable in our market. These winches are suitable for almost all ATVs. Traction force is from 900 to 1800 kilograms. The mechanism is all-metal. Cables are steel and synthetic.

In terms of price-quality ratio, the WARN winch for an ATV will be a fairly profitable solution, albeit the most expensive one. This WARN company is also distinguished by its uptime. Under conditions of proper operation and timely maintenance, it will last a long time.

T-MAX winch

The most budget option. The next T-Max winch for an ATV from a Chinese company is also quite decent quality at an average price. There are different capacities. Used on ATVs up to 500 and more than 500 cubes. Traction effort T-Max from 1130 kilograms to two and a half tons.

Also available with steel and synthetic cables 15 meters long. Includes seats and automatic brakes.

The T-MAX winch has the following minus - before installing it on an ATV, it must be disassembled and lubricated to prevent unauthorized ingress of moisture into it.

The

T-MAX winch will provide you with reliable protection against getting stuck in difficult road conditions.

I would like to note for review the manufacturers: MASTER-WINCH and QUADRAX. If you need a quad for "antlers and showing off" to your comrades, buy a quinoa of the cheapest option, and don't think about this issue, anyway, don't use it for its intended purpose. And to stand on the "showcase", as they say, and the usual layout can.

How to use the winch correctly:

Cable accumulation on one side of the drum

Any winch has two control modes on the ATV: electric mode and manual unwind mode. In crowning a tree, we use a protective sling. We bend around the tree with a sling and hook on the hook. Be sure to keep the rope taut when operating the winch. Do not use the winch with the engine turned off - it will save the battery from discharging.

Sometimes, in difficult situations, the power may not be enough, use the unit. If you are pulling out the ATV at a sharp angle, then from time to time it is necessary to loosen the cable and wind it on the opposite side of the drum. Otherwise, the accumulation of cable on one side of the drum will cause the winch to jam.

Did you have to use a lifeguard on a hike? Upon returning home, be sure to unwind it, inspect the cable, clean it of dirt, dry it and lay it tightly on the drum.

Suppose you pull out the second quadric with your swan, then your all-terrain vehicle must be stationary. And in no case do not try to move back - the load on the winch increases significantly.

Be sure to wear gloves when using to avoid injury to your hands, especially if the cable is metal.

Installation of a winch with a detailed video on an ATV

Consider the example of WARN. Unpacking from the package. The platform is attached to the quadra frame, and the winch is directly attached to it. It is necessary to disassemble the front of the ATV and install the platform.

After reading at the end of the post, I advise you to watch a step-by-step installation video, where everything is clearly shown and shown to the smallest detail. What modifications are needed during installation?

Where do we start?

Removing the front protection. The platform itself is attached to the frame in different ways, who fastens it, others weld it. Each method has its pros and cons. Installing the platform with bolts allows you to return the ATV to the factory state, when you weld it, the factory one will not work later, you can say - forever.

So, the installation of the winch itself requires convenience, before work, we will raise the ATV with a jack and proceed to install the platform. Remove front cover. The platform is partially attached to native fasteners, partially to the frame with special clamps, which should be included in the kit. We turn off the native bolts from the bumper - there will be one of the attachment points of the platform. We attach the platform with a bolt and, according to the instructions, begin to bait. If all the fasteners fit, we begin to stretch it.

The most important thing is to make sure that the clamps stretch without distortion, so we tighten the nuts one by one. The platform has been set up. It's time to install the quinoa itself. Be careful, it is heavy, it can fall, squeeze your fingers, so you need to be careful.

The instruction asks to install on different bolts. Some are 20 centimeters, others 25. We take 25 and fasten them through the brackets to the bottom mount. Note that the brackets can be of different sizes. This is surprising, because the copy is not Russian-made))), but unfortunately a fact. Therefore, in such cases, you will either have to unbend the bracket or drill it so that the holes fit under the mount.

Is everything okay? Now you can pull. The procedure is not very convenient, but doable. We pass the cable into the "lips". When using the cable, we have it at different angles. These lips allow us to keep the cable alive with the help of rollers, freeing it from friction on the part of the all-terrain vehicle. Of course, over time, these rollers wear out, crumple and stop rolling. But it won't affect performance much. Next, fasten the lips to the fastener. So, the installation of the winch is almost completed. For those who don't understand, open the video.

Power and control wiring

We proceed to the laying of new wiring. Wires are included, power. Part goes from the battery to the solenoid, and part from the solenoid to the swan.
