If your bike trailer’s wheel is broken, then finding a replacement wheel can be a hassle.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to replacing your bike trailer wheel, and how you might be able to fix it without even buying a new one.
Getting a replacement wheel can be a hassle! But there’s a good chance you can repair the wheel by getting the right tools or just taking it into a local bike shop.
Here are some common issues that don’t require you to buy a new replacement wheel.
The tire is flatIf the tire is flat, you will simply just need to replace the inner tube. You’ll just need to purchase the right inner tube size, which is either 16 inches or 20 inches. You can measure the diameter of the wheel or just look on the side of the tire for the size.
Here’s a short video on how to fix a flat tire on a bike trailer.
A spoke is brokenIf a spoke on the wheel has broken, then the spoke can be replaced. You can either do this yourself or just bring it to a local bike mechanic.
Here’s a helpful video no how to repair a spoke.
The wheel is not true (it’s wobbly)If your wheel is a bit wobbly while riding, it means the wheel is not “true”. The remedy for this is to true the wheel, which is rather simple to do. You can attempt to do it yourself or bring it to a local bike mechanic.
If your wheel is not repairable using the methods above, then your wheel is probably truly broken. Continue to the next step. If you still think it can be repaired, I recommend taking it to the local bike shop.
Wheels come in either 16 inches (406 mm) or 20 inches (508 mm). The size of your wheel should be engraved on the side of the tire. If you’re not sure what size it is, you can measure the diameter of the wheel from one end to the other end.
If you’re not sure what brand your wheel is, the brand is labeled somewhere on the trailer itself.
Once you’ve identified the size of your wheel, you’re ready to find a replacement wheel.

Personally, I would not bother getting a new Instep wheel. I would recommend getting a better trailer that will not break, such as the Schwinn Joyrider.
Just that fact that multiple people are getting replacement wheels for Instep trailers means the quality of their plastic wheels does not hold up.

The best and most efficient tire changer is the new WP crane based tire lift. The working environment in garages, tire shops, seasonal tire storage centers, tire warehouses is very often an “ergonomic nightmare”.
Tire workers are constantly faced with climbing and turning with heavy and uncomfortable loads in their hands.
EdmoLift has found the solution to this problem - the perfect tool - the Tire Wheel Lift.
This is a great product that allows your employees to work harder and more efficiently. At the same time, the tire lift protects the health of workers, helps to avoid industrial injuries in the form of pain in the back and arms, and sprains. Until now, there were no really good tools on the market for collecting, moving, lifting and laying tires - all this work was done by hand. Workers sorting and storing tires often complain of pain in their backs, arms, and sprains. Under this explanation, many of them can take sick leave, and as a result, the organization loses from the absence of an employee in the workplace. You have to hire another employee, and often, just redistribute the load between the remaining ones, exposing their health to greater danger.
This tire lift kit features a lightweight, manoeuvrable and ergonomic mobile handcart for moving the tire and wheel kit around the site. Our wheeled tire lifters have changed that. They easily move the tires around the area, raise the tires to a predetermined height and easily place them on the rack. Our wheeled tire lifts are especially valuable when a large number of tires are placed in and around the workplace – like in seasonal tire warehouses. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION |
Mast made of anodized aluminium, load carriage made of steel with precision ball bearings, manipulators equipped with powerful energy efficient 24V DC motors, carriage driven by steel belts, supplied with built-in charger.
Once again, the EdmoLift Tire Wheel Lift is not only a tool to improve the efficiency of many tire handling workflows, but also a powerful way to improve the ergonomics of the workspace, thereby maintaining the health of workers and saving on hospital and professional treatment costs. injuries.
When using the EdmoLift tire lifter, working with even large tires will not cause any inconvenience.

More often it is a question of economy. Repairing or replacing a tire is often not that difficult, but the mandatory dismantling of a wheel is a laborious, long and troublesome business. When working in a scrap yard or when dismantling structures, any tire, expensive or not, is doomed to a short duty cycle, even with the most correct operation. As a result - downtime expensive equipment in all respects. Less commonly, the use of solid tires is driven by safety and common sense requirements. Mobile towers, a lift are a good example: a tire burst when people are working at a height is unacceptable. Security is no joke.
The choice here is not so big: to use whole, i.e. non-pneumatic, tire or fill pneumatic with polyurethane?
This type of tire is often full of jargon. Tires of the same design are called by different names, and vice versa. There are several main groups of solid tires:
Massive - two-layer construction (outdated technology today, cheap, rarely used) provides . .. yes, it does not provide anything, except for the lack of air in the tire, hard as a cobblestone, all the bumps roads are costly to repair the suspension, only the elasticity of the rubber itself saves.
Superelastic - a three-layer construction (modern technology, produced everywhere by everyone) provides incomparably better elasticity and therefore saves the suspension system of equipment much better.
is the most widely used type of solid tire today. Almost perfect.
Bandage - by design, this is a rubberized rim, the low profile of the tire ensures the absence of lateral vibrations. Used on flat floors.
Special - designed for a specific type of equipment, the design ensures the special properties of the tire. As an example - a tire with holes on the sidewall, providing additional elasticity of the tire.
Except for bandage tires, the listed types of tires are mounted on the same rim as the pneumatic ones, which means that you can replace the pneumatics with solid ones without additional costs for the rim. To do this, you need a special press and a set of mandrels, which professional suppliers of solid tires probably have. Unlike pneumatics, of course, they are heavier, far from being so elastic, which is not so important on even floors, but critical on uneven surfaces. Significantly more expensive, but with a longer service life and do not require repair.
The procedure, while simple, requires attention to detail.
The first is the polyurethane itself: a two-component, epoxy-like, low, medium and high hardness. Next is a pump that mixes polyurethane in a 1:1 ratio and pumps it into the tire through a valve instead of air at the same working pressure.
To release the air in the tire, a technological hole is pierced, as soon as all the air has escaped and the hole has appeared, it is elegantly closed with a screw or bolt. Then the required pressure is applied. It is very important that there are no air pockets left. Well, and the correct temperature regime before, during and after filling. Wheel done!
Precisely the wheel, because filling is only possible on a wheel-mounted tire. Polyurethane after hardening is a dense, clean, elastic mass of pseudo-rubber that fills the entire volume of the tire. Sometimes someone adds crumb rubber to polyurethane - to reduce costs. This is not always good, because. quality deteriorates drastically.
The next trick that demonstrates the properties of this wheel always impresses. You raise the solid wheel 4.00-8 with your hands to chest level and throw it on the concrete floor, and it solidly imprints on it (isn't the term solid from here?). The same wheel filled with polyurethane rebounds elastically from the floor, you have to dodge. It retains elasticity and operating speed almost equal to the pneumatic wheel.
Any pneumatic tire can be filled with polyurethane, with any ply rating and tread pattern, and it will retain almost all tire characteristics.
