The territory of the Jonestown community, hidden in the jungles of Guyana, was literally strewn with hundreds of corpses. Adults, young and even babies, men and women, white and black - they were all members of the religious sect "Peoples Temple". On November 18, 1978, 900 Americans voluntarily died at the call of their spiritual leader, Jim Jones. But those who were lucky enough to survive consider what happened a massacre. "Lenta.ru" figured out how a man from the American hinterland was able to attract thousands of followers and inspire them with his paranoid ideas. nine0003
“Hurry up, my children. Hurry up,” Jones said, keeping a close eye on the poison-taking followers. First they injected potassium cyanide into their children's mouths, and now they themselves sorted glasses of a fruit drink mixed with poison and sedatives. People died one after another before his eyes, at his call, for his idea. He called it "an act of revolutionary suicide as a protest against this inhuman world." Now he is remembered as the founder of a destructive sect, and in fact - a murderer. nine0003
"He was a predator who masterfully mastered the art of luring completely different people," - this is how, many years later, Jim Jones will be referred to by followers who were able to leave his community in time. And although the childhood and early years of the future guru did not differ from thousands of other Americans, perhaps this is where the roots of his cruelty and crazy ideas are hidden.
Jones was born in May 1931 in the town of Crete in the US state of Indiana. Due to economic problems during the Great Depression, the family moved to the town of Lynn, where he ended up growing up in a shack with no sewer. His mother was a full-time worker, and his father, a World War I veteran, descended into a racist alcoholic, which kept him and Jones out of touch for years. nine0003

Jones' peers thought he was odd. According to them, he craved attention, was obsessed with religion and death. They said that the boy regularly arranged funerals for animals, and once he allegedly slaughtered a cat himself. In addition, he was interested in socialism and even seemed to be fascinated by the actions of Adolf Hitler and his death. nine0003
Jones himself later said that he felt like an outcast: he was never accepted, he received less love. Because of this, he even went to the most despised and rejected church in the area, in which Pentecostals gathered, where he was unexpectedly received with all cordiality. Jones graduated with honors in 1948, married a nurse a year later, and moved several times before settling in Indianapolis. Here he began attending meetings of the US Communist Party, while continuing to attend church services. nine0003
According to him, he always felt like a part of something other than American society, and he also felt the problems of black people quite early. “It seemed terrible to me that one person has so much more than another. I absolutely could not accept capitalism. (...) I thought: how can I demonstrate my Marxism? The idea came to infiltrate the church,” Jones said in one of his speeches.
Despite his communist views, in 1952 he was allowed to start training as a pastor in a Methodist church. He began to preach, but then parted ways with the Methodists: they did not like his talk about equality too much. Finally at 19The 56th Jones was ordained precisely by the Pentecostals from the "Assembly of God", and eight years later by the Protestant "Church of Christ", with which he had close relations.
At the same time, together with his wife Marceline, they began to build an ideal, as they called it, "rainbow family". They gradually adopted six children, among whom were guys with both Korean and Native American roots. They also became the first white couple in Indiana to adopt a black boy. He was named after his adoptive father: Jim Jones Jr. They also had their only natural son, Stefan. The couple saw their family as a mirror of how the world really should be. nine0003

Even before his initiation to San Johns, he created his own religious movement, which, changing several names, eventually became the infamous "Peoples Temple". It was something new for the Americans, because everyone was accepted there: whites, blacks, Indians, and Asians. Jim preached a mixture of elements of Christianity with communist and socialist ideas, but made special emphasis on social justice. “Higher beginnings. Complete equality. A society in which all things are common, there are no rich and poor, no races,” was the motto of his church. nine0003
Eyewitnesses said that in the "Temple of the Peoples" people were attracted by a sense of spiritual unity, there blacks or poor people did not feel rejected. To do this, Jones asked everyone to come in the simplest and not too pretentious clothes. In addition to the church, he organized a rehabilitation center for drug addicts, a nursing home, and began to help the homeless: they were fed, helped with children, and provided medical assistance.
At the same time, former parishioners noted: Jones always liked power, he liked the way people listened to priests. Some believe that he understood from the very beginning that to attract a large number of people means to get their money. According to them, those around him always heard from him what they wanted to hear, and in himself two opposites were combined: “it is good to attract people and evil to control them.” nine0003
The Peoples Temple was growing, while Jones was racially integrating the state, for which he was heavily criticized. Gradually, in his sermons, he began to talk less and less about God, paying more and more attention to the transformation of society. He started talking about moving if a dictator suddenly came to power, and also claimed that parishioners were ready to be arrested for their progressive views. “None of my children will end up in concentration camps. They will have to kill all of us first,” Jones said. nine0003
In the early 1960s, apocalyptic notes also appeared in his speeches: he called on his followers to be ready for Armageddon, nuclear war. He was strongly influenced by an article in Esquire magazine, which described the nine safest places in the event of a nuclear war. Among them was Brazil, where Jones planned to move with the "Temple" and even went with his family "for reconnaissance." As a result, he spent more than a year and a half abroad, even visited neighboring Guyana, but was forced to return.

In 1965, Jones convinced 150 of his most loyal followers to move with him from Indiana to California for safety - upstate was number one in that Esquire article. They decided to build a new socialist paradise on Earth in the Redwood Valley. Work on farmland, a common economy, an equal distribution of benefits attracted people, and the social agenda and charisma of Jones, who had begun to give lectures in big cities by that time, appealed to many. In the early 70s, when he moved his main activity to San Francisco, about 5 thousand people were considered his followers. nine0003
Around the same time, Jones began practicing "faith healing." It was a pure kind of performance: he persuaded people to pretend to be sick, and then "healed" them with words alone. It was a good way to solidify my status as a spiritual leader, and at the same time attract even more people and money. The followers really believed that the preacher was endowed with divine power and could almost walk on water. “I thought he could heal because I saw healings. And I thought they were real,” said one of them. nine0003
At the time, members of the Peoples Temple referred to Jones as kind and generous, and called him Father. “Some see me as a god. They see Christ in me,” the priest himself noted.
In San Francisco, Jones became increasingly involved in politics, meeting with both representatives of local elites and people from Washington. Gradually, the followers of the “Temple of the Peoples” became a political tool for him: he could, for example, easily convene the required number of people for elections or any mass actions. “I have more power than anyone, but my power depends on your faith and your willingness to serve,” he said. nine0003
Great power very soon led to total control over the flock. The houses of followers were illegally searched, their bank accounts were examined. People were forced to sign completely blank forms, on which they could then print confessions to a variety of crimes: allegedly they were both thieves and pedophiles, and mocked their children. All this was necessary for manipulation and blackmail in case someone decides to leave the church.
Gradually Jones began to talk about sex and his "adventures" right during the sermons. He claimed to be the only bisexual person on earth and claimed to have to sleep with both men and women "for the sake of socialism". Gradually, not only the minds of the followers, but also their bodies turned out to be under his control: people simply could not reject signs of attention from "Father Jones himself." He enjoyed using it. nine0003
The head of the "Temple of the Peoples" also introduced a system of punishments. They evolved from writing dozens of pages of apologies to bodily ones: people were summoned from among those gathered for a sermon and beaten in front of everyone. On the audio recordings that have remained since that time, Jones is clearly audible during such beatings, giggling and even laughing outright.

Naturally, Jones failed to confuse all the parishioners. Several people drew attention to the fact that his words about equality diverge from the deed: the inner circle of the priest consisted entirely of white people. And when they collected other inconsistencies and then publicly voiced them, the preacher was furious. At the same time, people began to leave the church, dissatisfied with the order. They told the outside world about what was happening in the dungeons of the "Temple", they were branded traitors. All this contributed to the development of paranoia in Jones. He incited fear, told that the Church was being monitored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Central Intelligence Agency, that they were plotting against it and waging an aggressive campaign. nine0003
In 1973, a man first spoke of suicide as a means of attracting attention: “for socialism, for communism, for the liberation of the blacks, for the liberation of the oppressed” and protest against capitalism. At first, the parishioners were shocked by such a topic, and then they got used to it and took such remarks for distant reasoning. With his assistants, Jones arranged a strange ritual: he treated everyone to drinks, and then announced that the liquid was poisoned, and they had an hour to live. After he announced that it was all a joke, they passed the test and were ready to die for the idea of the church. No one could have thought that the Father was actually ready to do something bad. nine0003
“His behavior was completely irrational, and you just started to go with the flow of fear. Fear of what might happen if you leave the church, what danger awaits there,” said one of the parishioners. “He was able to become a predator, but at the same time he provided you with everything that was necessary for life.”
And while the followers were trying to understand what they need to do better in their lives, the preacher reveled in his unlimited power over the "Temple", set people against each other, destroyed families. By that time, Jones had long and firmly depended on drugs. nine0003
In 1974, the head of the Peoples Temple leased over 15 square kilometers of land in the middle of the jungle from the government of South American Guyana. By that time, he was convinced that it was in this English-speaking country that he could build a socialist utopian community for his church.
The main construction of the commune, named after the founder of Jonestown, began in 1976 by a small group. Despite the inaccessibility of the place and the hot climate, the members of the church really liked to make their dream come true. They worked with enthusiasm and felt happy. In Guyana, in addition to houses, a pavilion was made for the general collection, crop areas, a pigsty and a chicken coop were created, as well as its own clinic and kindergarten. nine0003
Propaganda videos were sent to the US about how good life is in the community in Guyana. The videos, in which Jones spoke about unity with nature, fresh food, fishing, swimming in the purest water, were played on Sundays in the church. However, many of them were staged: “their own bananas” on the video, for example, came with stickers from manufacturers, that is, they were simply bought. In fact, the community could not produce enough food for everyone.
By 1977, people who had managed to leave the church began to fear that something was wrong in the "Temple of the Peoples" and decided to turn to journalists. The activities of the organization in the United States began to attract more and more attention, and stories about the cruelty of its leader began to be actively covered. As a result, it was decided to transport the followers to Guyana. They were sent to the community at different times through airports in different cities. The most massive influx of population into Jonestown came in July and August 1977 years, when 500 people moved there. A year later, there were already 900 of them.
Quite quickly, the parishioners realized that they did not end up in the paradise they had been promised, but, in fact, on a plantation, in a working concentration camp. Right at the entrance to Jonestown there was a tower with armed guards, immediately after arrival, money and passports were taken away from everyone. Everyone worked at least 16 hours a day and even in the heat. For the sake of a short break, people were even ready to “accidentally” get injured: for example, they asked others to hit them with a sledgehammer on the finger. nine0003
They were completely cut off from the world: no one even had a radio, everything that happened in Jonestown was learned directly from the head of the settlement. His voice was constantly broadcast through loudspeakers. Jones gave followers news that he simply made up.
Gradually the ideas of the preacher became more and more crazy, and the community more and more resembled a sect. Jones was constantly walking around with a microphone and talking. He declared that there was no life outside the commune, reported on a conspiracy against the "Temple", talked about the armed struggle, even over food. If at general meetings someone was indignant at something, then this person was taken away, drugged and kept in isolation. People were forbidden to eat with their families, talk to relatives, look others in the eye, and communicate. nine0003
View of Jonestown after the "revolutionary suicide".

Permanent exercises began, and they were held not only during the day, but also at night. Over the loudspeakers, it was suddenly reported that armed men were advancing on the community, who would take away the children and torture them. Residents had to line up with weapons around the perimeter for protection.
Jones continued to actively promote the idea of mass "revolutionary suicide". He argued that it was normal to die for the community during the attack of the enemy. The so-called white nights were introduced: people were awakened, gathered in a pavilion, given glasses with a "poisoned" drink and told that they should commit suicide. And if in the first general vote of Jones this idea was supported only by the two people closest to him, then gradually more and more followers began to lean towards the fact that this would be an acceptable way out of the situation. The inhabitants of the community gradually “broke down”: they were exhausted both physically, including from lack of food, and mentally. nine0003
As for Jones, he had an air-conditioned house with a small refrigerator that always had cool bottles of Pepsi in it. For a candy from his hands, people were ready to "surrender" anyone, he was the only one in Jonestown who was gaining weight.
While Jones pressed his community in Guyana, the stories of former members of the Temple continued to rumble in San Francisco. Raised a wave of discontent and the families of people who left for Jonestown: they could not establish contact with their families and asked for help. Information about the actions of the church and rumors about the difficult life in the jungle reached Leo Ryan, a Democrat and a member of the House of Representatives of Congress. The man was known for visiting places where other legislators did not dare to meddle. In particular, he once voluntarily spent eight days in prison to check the conditions of detention. Ryan decided to personally go and study the situation in Jonestown. nine0003
He arrived in Guyana in November 1978 in a small plane. With the congressman were members of his team, several journalists and concerned relatives. They landed on the airstrip of the town of Port Kaituma - it was the closest to the community (it was about eight kilometers from it).
In Jonestown, the congressman was shown the territory, he was able to communicate with the residents: they almost vied with each other saying that they like everything, they live well, and in general everyone here is happy. The delegation was fed, a concert was held in honor of the visitors. After him, Ryan gave a speech in which he noted that people seem to be really happy with the local life, they like everything, so there is nothing to fear. His words were greeted with massive applause. Perhaps even more massive than the atmosphere required. nine0003

At the same time, a note was quietly handed over to one of the journalists saying they wanted to leave Jonestown. “I looked at this note, and thought:“ My God, this is true. Everything we feared is true, ”said Jackie Speyer, an aide to Congresswoman later. Jones, however, when they showed him the letter, sweated, got nervous, explained everything by the fact that people lie a lot, and asked to leave the community alone. nine0003
After that, people who wanted to return to the USA began to approach the delegation. The head of the "Temple" tried to dissuade them, but in the end publicly gave the go-ahead to leave. In his heart, he, apparently, perceived the desire of his followers as betrayal and defeat. Therefore, when the delegation left Jonestown, Jim Jones sent his guards after them with orders not to let them fly away.
Perhaps everything could have happened at least a little differently if the delegation had not been waiting for the second plane in Port Kaitum. It had to be requested through the US Embassy, as the first plane simply did not have enough space for six who wished to return. By the time the plane arrived, and everyone began to load into it, a tractor with a trailer drove onto the runway. Three people with weapons got out of it, several more rose from behind the sides. Shooting started. nine0003
A few people managed to hide in the bushes, the rest were less fortunate. Leo Ryan was killed (subsequently, two dozen bullet wounds were counted on his body), three journalists and a woman from among the “deserters” were killed along with him. More than 10 people were injured, some of them were able to survive literally by a miracle.

“The congressman is dead. The traitors are dead. (...) Do you think they'll let us get away with it?" Jones announced at this time to his followers. Since it was impossible to easily deal with the delegation and return to normal life, the proposed solution turned out to be simple and was rehearsed more than once: "If we cannot live in peace, let's die in peace." nine0003
Only one woman objected to the decision long ago imposed on the community: she wondered why it was so important to die because a few people left, choosing their own fate. It was not Jones who answered her, but members of the Peoples Temple, like her. According to them, their own life does not exist, and indeed they all survived to this point only thanks to the preacher.
The decision has been made. Armed men surrounded the assembly house. Jones demanded that a barrel be brought: it was mixed with a fruit drink (Flavor Aid, which would then be mistaken for the more famous Kool-Aid), sedatives and potassium cyanide. First, children were injected with poison, then adults began to dismantle the glasses...
Jones waited until his admirers stopped showing signs of life and followed them. But he died not from poisoned juice, but from a bullet. There are over 900 corpses left in Jonestown. Five more followed their leader to the Guyanese capital, Georgetown, where the community had property.
However, there are survivors in this story - in addition to those who survived on the runway. So, one of the residents of the community decided to hide under the bed, and fell asleep there. And when she woke up, everything around was already littered with corpses. nine0003
A group of young people also survived, including Jim Jones's two sons: native Stefan and black Jim Jones Jr. On that day, as members of the basketball team, they were in the Guyanese capital for a match, and when they received word from their father about the revolutionary decision, they tried to break through home, and did not mindlessly follow the order.
Others also managed to escape. Someone was lucky enough to go on business a little earlier, but Tim Carter was sent on an urgent assignment right before the last mass gathering at the pavilion. According to the man, an aide to Jones handed him a bag of money and told him to take it to the Soviet embassy in Georgetown: he believed that the Russians could give the members of the "Temple" asylum after the death of Congressman Ryan. nine0003

***
Like any tragedy, Jonestown was not without conspiracy theories and ambiguities. It is believed that some sectarians did not drink poison, but injected themselves with lethal injections - traces of needles will be found on dozens of corpses. The same fact allows some to consider what happened as a murder: after all, people could be forcibly pumped with poison, and the corpses, which had lain in the tropical heat for several days, were hardly examined after the tragedy. nine0003
According to another theory, what happened was not a mass suicide at all. Allegedly, the US intelligence services decided to get rid of the members of the commune, because they requested asylum through the Soviet embassy.
Now the place where Jonestown was once located has been swallowed up by the jungle: you can only find an old sign at the entrance there. After the tragedy, they wanted to give the houses to refugees, then they were plundered by local Guyanese, but they did not begin to live in them out of prejudice. In the mid-1980s, the buildings were destroyed by fire. nine0003
The tragedy of Jonestown was so deeply imprinted in the minds of Americans that they immediately reacted with hostility to any idea of building an ideal community. So it was with the Indian guru Osho, who moved to the United States in the 1980s. However, terrible events, like the memory of them, are erased over time. Only circumstantial evidence remains, such as, for example, the expression "drink the Kool-Aid" that has come into use - "drink the Kool-Aid", if translated literally. Means "blindly believe, follow beliefs."
