...We tested the AirMan ResQ Pro kit on an editorial Santa Fe Classic, one tire of which was deliberately perforated with a sharpened 6mm steel bar. A hole of this diameter can easily be obtained from bare pavement rebar or a nail. A red hose was connected to the wheel that was flat and sat on the rim, the valve was switched to the “sealing” mode and the compressor was turned on ... We are waiting for ten seconds, twenty, twenty-five ... The effect of the application began to appear after thirty seconds. The crumpled tire slowly but surely began to come to life and straighten out, leveling the car.
Secrets of the company
The ResQ Pro field service kit of the well-known AirMan brand, specially designed for the rapid repair of tires of cars, SUVs, minivans and light trucks. Produced in Denmark, supplied to our country by the metropolitan company Apiko. The device, assembled on a single platform-base, consists of two main components - a compact air compressor operating through the cigarette lighter from the on-board network with a voltage of 12 V, and a cylinder with liquid sealant “docked” to it.
This tandem, in fact, is the lifesaver that allows you to revive a wheel punctured on the road in just a few minutes.
... The process of revitalizing the wheel of the test machine occurs due to the fact that much more air-sealing mixture enters it than leaves through the hole in the same time. As a result, the tire gradually inflates, since the sealant itself quickly polymerizes at the puncture site, first narrowing and then completely clogging the hole. As a result, the entire process of repairing a punctured 16-inch tire (with a hole with a diameter of 6 mm) took no more than seven minutes. The most important thing is that a jack is not needed at all, since the wheel does not hang out during inflation!
And this is especially true when you consider that today a number of European and Asian automakers are equipping their cars (mainly business and executive class) with such kits on the assembly line, removing the spare wheel from them. This is done for the sake of convenience for both the driver and the passenger of the "luxury" car.
Agree, it is difficult to imagine a person in a formal suit and tie, who, even in clear, warm weather, will be poking around near the car with a jack and a spare wheel. By the way, has anyone tried to get and prepare for installation a spare wheel fixed under the bottom of the body? Yes, even in the rain or frost, and even on a country road? By the nature of our work, we had to participate in this action and the impressions from it are far from rosy.
It's all about the nuances
So when the AirMan ResQ Pro kit entered the editorial test, we paid special attention to its service capabilities. And to begin with, a few words about the functional interaction of the compressor mentioned above and the cylinder with liquid sealant. This is how they work together. The compressor, using a special valve-switch fixed on the body, is connected to the can, and the latter, using a special repair hose (it is painted red), to the valve of a punctured tire. The pump, when turned on, creates a high pressure in the cylinder, after which the sealant begins to spray inside the tire and break out through the puncture.
Note that the main component of most modern tire sealants is a liquid adhesive based on vinyl acetate. For the first time it began to be used since the late 80s of the last century by the American military - such glue was poured as a so-called preventive sealant into the wheels of military equipment - in case of a possible puncture, as well as fragmentation or bullet "wound" of the tread, which must be quickly (and directly in motion) "patch". In our case, the situation is somewhat different - the repair adhesive spray is activated only when the tire has already received a hole.
...When pumping sealant in our risky experiment, the tire pressure was controlled by a pressure gauge built into the compressor. As soon as it reached the required value of 2.2 atm, we disconnected the compressor from the wheel and made a couple of test runs on the car. Manufacturers recommend driving several hundred meters immediately after pumping the sealant, since when the rim rotates, the adhesive composition is evenly distributed over the inner surface of the tire, and this avoids imbalance.
According to our estimates, a car with a retreaded tire could immediately go on the route. Moreover, the recommended driving mode after pumping the wheel can hardly be called sparing - on a reanimated tire it is allowed to drive as much as 200 km, and at a speed of up to 80 km / h. Of course, we did not do this, and the manufacturers of the service kit advise you to first get to the tire shop and have the tire professionally repaired there.
Significant "little things"
Summing up our blitz test, we must say that AirMan ResQ can work not only in repair, but also in normal mode, that is, like an ordinary road compressor. To do this, it has a separate hose (black), the air supply to which is carried out by moving the valve-switch to the appropriate position. The ergonomics of this kit, in our opinion, deserves the highest praise. In the stowed position, it is packed in a compact case, and both air hoses and the power cable are conveniently fixed in special technological niches of the support platform.
