Tire repairable zone

Here’s Why Your Tire Cannot Be Repaired

By John Goreham G+ Jun 29 2020 - 11:03am

Many vehicle owners feel frustrated when they have a nail in the tire and are told by a tire shop that the tire cannot be repaired. Here are a few common reasons why it can’t be fixed.

You just either rolled up to a tire shop on a flat, were towed in, or drove in with your spare on the car and the flat in the trunk. You have important things to do today, and since you can clearly see there is a nail in the tread, you expect to be told that the nail can be pulled out and the tire fixed quickly. However, after a quick glance, the tire shop says, “No can do, Bubba.” They are not just trying to sell you a new tire. There are real reasons why many flats cannot simply be patched.

Reason 1 Why Your Tire Cannot Be Repaired – You Drove On The Flat
Modern tires have an inner structure of the sidewall that is not designed to support your vehicle when uninflated. You can usually get away with a flat tire rolling without air for a short distance – think yards, not miles. However, if you just drove 10 minutes on the flat, you destroyed that important sidewall structure and the tire cannot be repaired.

Reason 2 Why Your Tire Cannot Be Repaired – Your Puncture Is In The No Repair Zone
Modern tires also need to be puncture-free along the sides and in from the sides about 20% on both sides of the tire. If your puncture is near the sidewall you are out of luck. Tire shops need to keep customers safe, and they follow the standard industry guidelines and will not repair a puncture too close to either sidewall. They should err on the side of caution to protect your safety and protect themselves from liabiility. Most do.

Reason 3 Why Your Tire Cannot Be Repaired – Your Tire Has Other Issues
If you have a bubble, a tear, or a big honking carbuncle on the side of your tire, it is unrepairable. Even if that is NOT why your tire went flat. If you have any area of the tire worn beyond the tread wear indicators, your tire is not repairable. If your tire is older than the internet, your tire is not repairable. If your tire is unevenly worn and any of the metal parts inside are visible your tire is not repairable. We can keep going. Basically, if your tire was not safe before the puncture, your tire shop would be crazy to try to repair the puncture. According to NHTSA, hundreds of people are killed each year due to tire failure. Your tire shop does not want you to be killed due to tire failure with the receipt for the repair sitting in the cupholder.

Reason 4 Your Tire Cannot Be Repaired - You Have Run Flat Tires
Many shops will not repair a run-flat tire that has had a puncture. Although run-flats are designed to get you to a shop or home when you have a puncture, they may not have been designed to then be repaired and continue in service after having been driven when deflated. This is one reason we give run-flat tires like those on BMW vehicles a thumbs-down.

Reason 5 Your Tire Cannot Be Repaired - The Puncture Is Too Large
If the puncture in your tire isn't just a normal nail or screw, but rather a chunk of metal, your repair shop will tell you to buy a new tire. Sometimes the metal bruises or gouges the tire either inside or outside and the plug and patch method of repair is simply not safe to perform.

Reason 6 Why Your Tire Cannot be Repaired - It Was Struck By A Meteorite
We recently had a puncture that we surmised was a meteorite strike. Yes, it sounds crazy, but read our story and tell us if you have a better guess.

Take care of your tires and they will take care of you. If you have a tire-repair story to tell, feel free to offer it up in the comments below.

How Close To Sidewall Can A Tire Be Patched?

One of the problems you can encounter when traveling by car is a punctured tire. Using a patch is a fairly common option to work around this issue.

Yet, if the hole is in a position like a tire wall, the problem becomes much more complicated because it is likely that the defensive position will not be patched.

So, how close to the sidewall can a tire be patched? A distance of 6 mm or more from the tire shoulder is required to fit a patch. In other words, if a crack is closer than 6mm, there’s almost nothing you can do about it!

Tire Sidewall Overview

First, let’s learn about sidewalls and how to identify them on your tires.

The wall is the rubber part from the outer edge of the rim to the road surface. This part also has the largest area, is the most flexible, and continuously deforms under loads when moving.

How Close To Sidewall Can A Tire Be Patched?

As you know, the car’s wall is in a particular location, so it is pretty challenging to troubleshoot the hole here.

Manufacturers also recommend that you not choose the patch option if the spot is on the side of the vehicle or too close to this position. Then, how close to the sidewall can a tire be patched.

You cannot use the patch if the hole is close to the wheel with a gap of less than 6mm. In addition, you should note that if the hole is more significant than ¼ inch, the patch should not be used. In this case, if the patch is small, it cannot cover the hole, causing the wheel to deflate still when moving.

On the contrary, using a large patch can make the wheel more bulky, difficult to move, and unsafe.

Other Related Questions

To better understand the problems that occur with the tires and how to overcome them effectively, you can refer to the following information.

We’ve put together some frequently asked questions that may help answer your questions on this topic.

Plug a flat tire: Is it possible?

People are often concerned about whether it is safe to plug or patch a flat tire.

These two options are pretty standard in repairing or overcoming the problem of flat tires caused by rolling nails or other sharp objects.

The manufacturer still recommends that you better replace the tire with a new one when there is a problem because repairing with a plug or patch when a flat one is not a safe solution.

Yet, the cost of new tires is not cheap, and if you have this problem often, it is a big problem. So, many drivers use a plug or patch when a wheel is punctured.

There is a limit to the number of nails or patches on a product. You can use this option to temporarily fix the problem if you find a few small holes. If the wheel has many large holes or previous patches, it is best to replace it with a new one.

For a detailed guide, check out this video:

How close can a tire patch be to another patch?

The gap between patches is also a topic that people are very interested in. When traveling on the road, you may encounter a flat one many times.

As you know, when the tires have had previous patches or punctures in close locations, it is better to replace them. In case

Can you patch a tire on the side of the road?

In the case of a puncture on the tire side, the use of stickers is unlikely to have as much effect as you think.

The reason is that its wall adhesion is so thin that relatively few materials can adhere. More specifically, damage to the sidewall will seriously damage the structure of a wheel.

The solution to this problem is to insert an extra tube inside the wheel to ensure that you can still turn the whole thing.

How fast can you drive on a patched tire?

A patched one will not achieve the same speed and performance as it once was. Therefore, the optimal level you can expect from such a version will not be more than 85 mph. Of course, this is just the limit that many manufacturers recommend, but you should not overdo this limit.

Can you patch a tire with 2 nails in it?

The answer is yes! It’s just that the gap between the two punctures is at least 16 inches, and you might seal them with two large patches.

According to many manufacturers, the maximum number of times performed is two times. If more than that, it’s time to get a new one.

Conclusion

As such, a puncture in the side of the vehicle is a unique location where patching is not an optimal solution in this case. It would help if you changed to a new tire to ensure safety when traveling.

Reviews

I would like to tell you about my acquaintance with the Rossvik company. To be honest, my acquaintance was not usual. In principle, I had an unusual acquaintance with the tire repair business.
This is a very interesting story, if necessary, I will tell you separately. I didn’t think at all that at the age of 32 I would have a tire service. But he showed up for me. Yes. At that moment, I did not understand at all what, where and how ... and especially why ... What I had at that moment: a 3x4 booth, a set of machines, a jack and a gun. And different patches with the inscription "Rossvik". These were universals in a blister. Since I was a complete zero, I absolutely did not like everything. But not because of the material, but stupidly - because of the inability to use it. It has nothing to do with the company in any way. It was just inexperience. Unfortunately, Rossvik, in my region, was not developed (and to this day) as a distributor's design bureau, or rather, the distributor treated and relate to design bureaus mediocrely. Which influenced my choice of rem material, as the other representative was more insistent. Everything was and is exclusively on fame. That is, if you knew where to buy the material - you bought it. I didn't know. Well, no one told me where to get it. This determined my further development in the workshop with another company. Since I myself worked for a very long time in the field of trade, I reached out to those people who worked in the same way as I did in my time. But this is a completely different story. Let's get back to the topic. Even when I started working with other rem material, I still got to know Rossvik. Twice. Since it was interesting for me to develop, I naturally watched everything that was posted on YouTube. I was looking for different communities in VK. And I found them. Several.
And even, not counting this as bravado, I supervise one, yet, not big, but already, in narrow circles, a serious public that fully meets the needs of the masters. On the wave of communication and searching for information about the correct tire repair, I met Kristina Khairullina.
This, I'm not afraid of this word, wonderful, responsible, reverently relating to each master and to each issue, a person always finds common ground in the work and in relation to each of the masters. (This is my personal opinion, which has developed during the communication). Christina, it seems, should not even be given complex formulations, since her area of \u200b\u200bresponsibility is communication with all of us, but she always tries to find a consensus. This is exactly the Man I associate with Rossvik. I understand that for the material, for the connection of the activator with the adhesive of the patch, she is not directly responsible, but I am sure that it is precisely because of her attitude and love for her work and Rossvik that this connection becomes 50% stronger, only on her moral and volitional qualities. My second acquaintance with the firm Rossvik took place already three years after the beginning of my work. It was already a professional acquaintance at the highest level. It was a seminar where I got acquainted with GDP. Moreover, we already knew each other in absentia, I knew who he was, he knew that I was)). Of course, it was a storm, passion, emotions....
But, for me, it was one of the important stages in my learning and understanding how to properly repair tires. In one day, I met many good masters and learned a lot for my profession. I'll be honest. I still don't know what these people are outside Rossvik; but I, although I do not work with the material of this company, I think that these two people are ready to give everything for the sake of proper tire repair, and are fully associated with Rossvik. Always there and always ready to help with advice. Always in touch, MagShin. And while, in this company, there are these, in my opinion, the two most important people, Rossvik will always be on the hearing of the tire repair world. This is Christina and Vladimir. I know them.

And I'm proud to know them.
And I am glad that they - know me (probably)

Time Rossvik
I got acquainted with Rossvik products in 2015 when I came to work at Remshin31 in Belgorod.
Had an idea about tire repair, but superficial. I was introduced to this more deeply in Remshin31. Here, immediately, the first thing I was given to understand was that the main consumable we sell is Rossvik.
Next, I got acquainted with all the Rossvik product lines. It was very easy to do, since their nomenclature positions are very accessible and clearly spelled out. Cold patches, hot patches, valves, chamber patches, etc.
After a month of work, I was already confidently selling consumables from this company. Yes, and people in our region willingly use these materials at their tire repair sites.
In the process of working, I began to understand that, in order to be more effective in my work and help clients, I need more knowledge about the material and its application in practice. Just at that time, we started organizing training on Rossvik materials for customers of our store, in which I myself took part with pleasure.
According to all reviews from people, Rossvik is the most reliable and time-tested material with the largest line of patches for every taste and color and for any type of transport. We are told: “If you don’t know what tire repair materials to use, you definitely can’t go wrong with Rossvik.”
More recently, 2 more seminars were organized in Stary Oskol and Belgorod. There were a lot of tire fitters interested in gaining new knowledge and skills in tire repair.

My acquaintance with ROSSVIK began from the moment when I started my work in tire fitting. At that time, I managed to graduate from the academy and serve in the army. I had no work experience at all. But I didn’t manage to work in my specialty, and soon the desire completely disappeared. I was looking for something that I did not yet know and did not know how to do. And then, by coincidence, I miraculously got a job in tire fitting. Up to this point, I was very far from the wheels, disks and in general from the car. And I did not know about the existence of the ROSSVIK company at all. You will laugh, but when I picked up the spool and began to screw it into the valve, I inserted it with the back side and screwed it on. Well, what can I say - a landscape designer. There were only flowers and projects in my head. Coming to my first official job, I set a goal - to learn this craft. But for this I simply needed practical experience and knowledge of theory. What helped me a lot was my senior partner, and, of course, ROSSVIK products. What would I do without you! I have been working for the fourth year, I like my job. Car repair is not only work with pieces of iron, but also with people. Often, cars are brought to us for tire fitting after repairs in other workshops to correct “hack-work”. The reason is that they do not cooperate with ROSSVIK, and naturally, the materials are not so durable and of high quality. I try to explain to drivers the advantage of repairs made by us, using equipment and materials from ROSSVIK, and they agree with me. The renovation results speak for themselves. But I do not want to stop there, I plan to develop and strive for even greater results together with ROSSVIK. I am very grateful to the people who trust me, believe in me, and to the ROSSVIK company, which helps us improve and become real professionals in our field. Thank you everybody.

Unfortunately, I was not at the plant "enterprise" "ROSSVIK" and even at the seminar, but I hope, as soon as I have the opportunity, I will definitely fill this gap in my life. My acquaintance with the materials, the company "ROSSVIK" first happened in childhood. Like most children, the first transport was a bicycle. I lived in the village and all my free time my friends and I spent on the street, river, quarries, etc.
So about bicycles, you perfectly understand what kind of country roads and where only village children are not carried. Bicycle inner tubes were glued almost twice a day!!
I don't remember who and when was the first camera sealing teacher. Material used: For degreasing (triple cologne, something containing alcohol)
Glue (well, if the Moment) Cleaning (made with an ordinary used iron cap for twists, in which a lot of holes were pierced on one side with a nail, thus getting an ABRASIVE) We are approaching the topic of acquaintance with "ROSSVIK"
Thus, the repair of the efficiency of the patches was reduced 50/50 ... Having listened to the advice of one of the elders, we turned to Tire Repair, which was located in a nearby small town, for help. There I saw for the first time how the professionals glue and look wonderful, chambered patches of the company "ROSSVIK". For us, what we saw seemed to be something fantastic! This is not the end of the story. How I started working in a tire shop using ROSSVIK material. By the way, I didn’t think that I would work in a tire shop, all the more I would become the owner of “The same tire shop in which I glued bicycle tubes as a child” I think everyone knows the real salary of the working class and extortionate mortgage interest. .. I had to earn extra money on the weekends, and then I ran into the sphere of tire fitting. Just like everyone else, there were many mistakes, incomprehensible situations with glue, sealants, and almost all consumables ... But after the first "seasonal" change of shoes, you seemed to have passed the "sacrament of baptism" "with fire and sword"
Immediately mastered everything!! Since there is no opportunity and time to get to the seminar, but I want to develop and learn! I have to dig on the Internet, I ask questions to many tire fitting specialists, of course, not everyone answers this or that question, but the majority of the ROSSVIK participants who participate in the competitions answer!! By the way, publicly thank them again!! So little by little I get the missing information!!
And yes, I almost forgot ...
So I worked part-time for 5 years in a tire fitting.
As soon as I found out about its sale, I immediately bought it !!
I tried a large number of materials from various manufacturers . .. I settled on the firm "ROSSVIK", as I decided for myself:
Price!! Quality!!
This is the most important thing in our common cause!!
"Now I'm not looking for something new, because everything is here!! Quality, reasonable prices and the best manufacturer in the world!!
There are no irreplaceable
- this is definitely not about this company!!

Thank you!! for a variety of extraordinary contests!! the opportunity to prove myself in something new!!

Applying tire repair materials to retreadable diagonal tires

Applying tire repair materials to retreadable bias tires

Sticker. Laminated calendered rubber, rubber-fabric patches, layers of cord and chafer or other materials are glued to the damage sites in the frame and side area with the sides apart. Previously, these places are smeared with rubber glue with a concentration of 1: 8 with a brush and kept for some time to dry naturally. Fungi or plugs are inserted into punctures smeared with glue.

Places of damage in the cover rubber of the tread and sidewalls are repaired using a special installation ATSh-105. The tire is installed on a lifting table and a mandrel of the appropriate size is inserted into its cavity, aligning the center of the mandrel with the center of damage. An overlay corresponding to the size of the tire is put on the head of the worm machine. With the help of a lifting table, the tire rises to the level of coincidence of the centers of damage and the lining and is pressed against the lining with a special device. A rubber mixture is squeezed out of the worm machine, heated to 60-70 ° C, and under a pressure of 6.5-7.5 MPa fills the damaged area on the tire.

Rubber glue is applied to the rough surface of the retreaded tire to ensure the necessary strength of its bond with the rubber interlayer and tread. The tire is placed in a spraying machine, in which its surface is blown with compressed air, washed with gasoline and coated with glue using a spray gun. The glue is sprayed under a pressure of 0.3-0.35 MPa. Plant productivity 30 tires/h.

After spraying, the tires are hung on an overhead conveyor and dried for 25 minutes.

Duplication of treads with calendered interleaved rubber compound. Previously, the inner surface of the protectors is roughened on the machine with metal brushes, then it is refreshed with gasoline or glue, dried and heated with infrared rays. Further, the protectors move along the roller table to the three-roll laboratory calender LK-160 (roll diameter 160 mm, working length of the rolls is about 600 mm) and enters the gap between the lower roll and the rubberized duplicating roller. Simultaneously with the feed rollers, the heated rubber mixture is fed through the belt conveyor to the calender into the gap between the upper and middle rolls, covers the middle

roll, duplicated with a tread in the gap between the lower roll and the duplicating roller and fed to the stitching machines. At the same time, the edges of the interlayer rubber protrude along the edges of the tread by 5 mm on each side.

When duplicating on the calender, a certain temperature of the rolls is maintained (°C): 60-65 - top; 55-60 - medium; 50-55 - lower.

Applying a new tread to a retreaded tire. The protector is superimposed on the carcass with a full profile or in the form of a winding of a narrow rubber band.

Full profile tread overlay. A retreadable tire with a chamber inserted into its cavity is installed on the folded rim of the tire press so that the middle line of the tire profile is aligned with the central risk of the press roller. Then the chamber is blown with compressed air to a pressure of 0.1-0.25 MPa, the rim moves apart and the tire is fixed on the rim.

The tread, duplicated with an interlayer rubber compound, after heating with infrared rays for 6-7 minutes to 65-70 ° C, is applied on a rolling machine to the retreaded tire and rolled by the central and side rollers. After that, the tire is inspected, the resulting bubbles are pierced with an awl and a needle roller and measured. Then the rim is shifted, the air is released from the chamber, the tire is removed from the machine, the chamber is removed from it and fed to vulcanization by a belt conveyor.

The tread can be applied on the machine. The rubber mixture in the form of a tape from the roller is fed into the hopper of the cold feed worm machine. After exiting the machine head, the tread band passes through the tread profile compensator and enters the compensation roller table, where its supply is created in the form of a loop, which is necessary for the continuous operation of the unit. Next, the tread tape in a hot state is applied to a rotating tire mounted on a disk, cut off, joined and rolled by a presser with a rubber diaphragm that eliminates air entrapment. After applying a hot tread, the tire is removed from the disk and sent for vulcanization.

The unit is equipped with a control panel and a control panel.
