What to Consider When Choosing a TPMS Tool

Key Features

Compatibility

Tool and sensor compatibility is a major factor to consider when buying a TPMS tool. Some tools are meant to be used with particular car models, while others can be used with a wide selection of vehicles. If you want a TPMS tool you can use on multiple vehicles, get one that’s compatible with American, European, and Asian cars. Most brands fall within these categories.

Interface

The functions of a TPMS tool guide its design and price. While some TPMS tools are basically monitor-only systems, some have more than four functions. They can check the tire pressure, relearn sensors, reset codes, and program sensors. They display this data in real time on an LCD screen.

Power Source

Battery powered, solar powered, or rechargeable? The power source is an important feature when choosing a TPMS tool. While some tools have nine-volt batteries that last long, there are newer products that have rechargeable batteries or use solar energy. It is also important to know the status of the battery, so you know when it’s time to replace it.

TPMS Tool Pricing

TPMS tools can range anywhere from $10-$300 or more. Features are a primary determining factor for pricing. More basic models that have very limited functions will run at the lower end of the price scale, while more comprehensive versions sell for much more. Quality and application coverage also factor into what you can expect to pay.

FAQs

You've got questions. The Drive has answers.

Q: What does a TPMS tool do?

This tool identifies the types of sensors in your tires and the information that the sensors contain. This information is necessary for the sensors to work correctly after you have performed maintenance such as a tire replacement or rotation. You use the tool to perform the proper relearn procedures to reset the system.

Q: Do all vehicles have a TPMS?

No, only newer cars and trucks. Manufacturers began to install TPMS in vehicles in the 1980s on a few luxury cars. Rollover problems on some vehicles in the late 1990s prompted laws mandating TPMS on U.S. vehicles. As of 2012, all vehicles sold in the U.S. and EU must have a TPMS.

Q: Can TPMS sensors be reprogrammed?

A: It depends on the kind of sensors your vehicle is equipped with. Many are reprogrammable, and all you need to reprogram them is one of the TPMS tools on our list above.

Q: Can I reset TPMS with an OBD2 scanner?

A: If your OBD2 scanner does come with the ability to read TPMS codes and reset its sensors, then you’ll be able to do so without a specialized TPMS tool. However, if your OBD2 scanner isn’t able to do so, you will need a separate device.

TPS Wheel Sensor Diagnostic and Programming Tool

WHAT IS TPMS?
From November 1, 2014, all vehicles intended for the carriage of passengers are required, according to the European standard, to have a TPMS system (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) in serial production.
Monitor the wheels, except in rare cases, four sensors mounted on the tire rims, each of which measures pressure, temperature and speed, are powered by a lithium mini battery and communicate by radio with the vehicle's control unit.
Therefore, this concerns a very complex system, besides having no single standard in form, installation location or radio frequency, which requires an advanced technological device to carry out any maintenance work.

TPS STANDARD TPMS SOLUTION The
TPS, Tire Pressure Service, is the tool that TEXA offers for wheel related TPMS operations, characterized by excellent brand and model coverage and traditional quality and structural strength.

As soon as a vehicle is selected, TPS dialogues with the sensors of each individual wheel; approaching the device to the sensor, it is able to activate it if it is in stand-by, then checking the efficiency and showing on the screen the pressure, temperature and, where available, the state of charge of the built-in battery, as well as the identification code and everything else possible diagnostic information provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

With TPS, the mechanic can check the wear condition of the sensor and, if necessary, replace it, the procedure is simplified by the built-in database that offers a list of compatible spare parts for this vehicle. In the same database, TEXA has other useful information at its disposal, such as the correct procedure for changing wheels.

If the sensor is replaced with a universal one, the TPS solution is able to program it by writing the identification code of the broken one into it, and also restores communication with the receiver or with the vehicle's electronic control unit.
This procedure is simplified by a clear menu that guides you step by step through each single option.

Besides being a "stand alone" tool, the TPS integrates best with other TEXA diagnostic products already present in the workshop.
With the help of the free APP "TPMS Repair" that guides the user step by step through all phases of operation, and thanks to the built-in Bluetooth module, TPS is able to communicate with any PC where the IDC4 TEXA software is installed, or with AXONE 4 and AXONE 4 mini.
With this feature offered by TPS, it is possible to use not only PC and AXONE 4 or AXONE 4 Mini as visualization devices, but also through the VCI interface, a dialogue will be established with the electronic control units that track the wheels to complete maintenance operations and sensor replacement TPMS along with setting the ECUs themselves.

Direct Type TPMS Service

Service Centers

Updated requirements for the production of modern cars include mandatory equipment with a TPMS system. This device provides a lot of positive aspects. The system notifies the driver that the pressure in the tires of the car is reduced relative to the established norms. Timely elimination of the problem allows:

  • ensure a decent level of movement safety;
  • save on fuel consumption;
  • reduce tire wear by up to 30%;
  • control the functioning of the brakes;
  • to increase the working life of rims and much more.

Like many car parts, the TPMS system needs periodic maintenance, which is now available in the Wheels for Free online store.

What is included in our service package?

We provide high quality service for direct pressure measurement systems. That is, the sensors of the device are placed inside the tire and signal a problem by transmitting information to the on-board computer. As a result, a special indicator lights up on the dashboard.

Sensors are located in each wheel. The direct type TPMS analyzes small, large and sudden changes in pressure.

In the maintenance of the device, our highly qualified specialists are ready to provide you with the following services:

  1. diagnostics of the TPMS system - the use of the most modern equipment allows you to solve any problem related to the replacement of sensors, setting up and restoring the functionality of the system. The year of manufacture, model and brand of car does not matter;
  2. cloning or duplication of sensors - this service means the repair or replacement of a standard sensor by copying information from it and transferring it to a new original or universal sensor. As a result, the clones completely repeat the regular device and function immediately in the normal mode;
  3. registration of tire pressure sensors - recently, on Asian or American-made cars, pressure monitoring systems are increasingly common that require the sensor to be passed into the on-board computer for its normal operation. In "Wheels for Free" this service is available for all types of cars, any year of manufacture;
  4. installation of non-standard TPMS systems - if the manufacturer of your vehicle did not provide for the presence of an important device for today, we will help you correct this defect.
