FIRESTONE HAS BEEN THE NATION'S LEADING TIRE PROVIDER FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY.

FLAT TIRE REPAIR, TIRE PATCHES, AND MORE

It's a tough road out there, and your tires bear the brunt of potholes, broken glass, nails, screws, and anything else that can puncture a tire. Firestone Complete Auto Care's flat tire repair services are the best in the business. We've been repairing tires since 1926, and we take pride in repairing America's tires. When tire damage strikes, come to Firestone Complete Auto Care–the tire repair shop you can trust.

If you suspect something is wrong with your vehicle's tires, don't hesitate to come into a Firestone Complete Auto Care near you. If your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light is on, you've hit something on the road, your tire is losing air, or maybe something just doesn't feel quite right, bring it in. One of our expert technicians will take a look and tell you if you need to repair or replace your tires.

Driving on a damaged tire can lead to additional (and more costly) rim damage and repairs, so it's best to have your tires examined at the first sign of trouble. The solution might be as simple as needing one of our patch plugs if the tire puncture is addressed early on. In other cases, a leaking valve stem or valve core may need to be replaced with a new one or the TPMS sensor needs to be reprogrammed or replaced. Visit your nearest Firestone Complete Auto Care, and we'll take care of you and your vehicle tire repairs.

Tire Repair & Patching/Plug

Tire Repair & Patching/Plug

If your tires still have life left in their tread and are not over 10 years old, Firestone Complete Auto Care maybe be able repair or patch & plug them to get you back on the road quickly. Keep in mind not all tire damage can be patched if the puncture is too big.

Tire Replacement

Tire Replacement

Over time, the tread on your tires wears down, leading to compromised traction on the road and potentially dangerous driving conditions. Tires generally need to be replaced every 25,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on vehicle manufacturer recommendations and driving habits.

Tire Rotations & Balancing

Tire Rotations & Balancing

When you have your tires rotated, you help increase the life of your tires by helping reduce uneven wear. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a tire rotation about every 5,000 miles or at the manufacturer-recommended mileage. Tire balancing helps ensure weight is evenly distributed around your tires. It's necessary about every 5,000 miles or as recommended by your manufacturer. Balancing can lead to a smoother ride, less tire wear, and reduced strain on the drivetrain. When you think tire balancing, think safe, smooth, and efficient driving.

Wheel Alignments

Wheel Alignments

It's best to have your alignment checked every 6,000 miles or twice a year. Even one misaligned wheel can cause the steering wheel to be off center and can lead to premature wear and tear on your vehicle over time. Keeping everything properly aligned ensures a smoother ride for you and a longer life for your tires.

Flat tires rarely happen at ideal times. Let Firestone Complete Auto Care help you with these answers to frequently asked flat tire questions.

Should I Change a Flat Tire Before Coming In for Tire Repair?

To ensure a safe drive that doesn’t damage your rims or create more expensive repairs, change your flat tire with your spare tire before coming into your local Firestone Complete Auto Care center for flat tire repair.

What If I Replace Just One Tire?

It’s tempting to replace just the tire that's damaged, but replacing one tire at a time can present challenges down the road since the one tire will have a different tread depth and thus different accelerating, braking, and cornering abilities than all of the others.

Why Do I Keep Getting Flat Tires?

Few things are more inconvenient than a flat tire —except back-to-back flat tires. Learn the reasons why you keep getting flat tires and what you can do to help prevent flat tires from deflating your spirits!

What Is Pothole Damage?

If your vehicle hits a pothole in the road, you may experience steering and suspension system misalignment and/or damage, tire punctures, bent rims, and more. When your vehicle experiences a sudden jolt from a pothole run-in, timely inspection is highly recommended.

Pothole damage may not be obvious right away, but it can wreak havoc on your entire car if it’s not addressed quickly and fixed right the first time. If you've had a recent run-in with a pothole, head to your local Firestone Complete Auto Care for a Complete Vehicle Inspection to check for any issues.

What Is a Tire Plug vs a Tire Patch?

A tire plug is a quick fix for a tire that's leaking air from a nail or similar object that has punctured the tire. A tire plug fills the hole of the tire but is not reliable without a tire patch and not recommended to use alone. A patch is applied to the inside of the tire to further prevent an air leak and helps hold the plug in place. This allows a tire with ample useful life left in it to hold air reliably and keep you on the road for longer.

Can You Repair a Run Flat Tire?

Run flat tires allow you to drive on a flat tire for a limited time with lesser risk than non-run flat tires. A Run Flat tire could be repaired if a nail or object is caught before tire damage occurs. However, if the tire is permanently damaged, it is required to replace a Run Flat tire with a new one.

Why Is My TPMS Light On?

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System light will illuminate if tire pressure is too low or part of the TPMS system has malfunctioned. Important TPMS warning light behavior:

  • Solid — A solid indicator light means one or more tires is operating at an unsafe pressure. Tire air pressure has dropped below the 25% OEM recommendation placard pressure. The recommended tire pressure is most commonly listed on a sticker inside the driver's door. If there's no sticker on the door, you can usually find the specs in the owner's manual.
  • Blinking — A blinking indicator light means the TPMS has malfunctioned. One or more sensors may have failed or lost communication with the vehicle's onboard diagnostics.

repair a puncture

To repair a puncture must be running tires. If the tire is punctured on one side or very close to it, the wheel cannot be repaired and must be replaced with a new one. If the tire is cracked instead of punctured, it cannot be repaired either and will need to be replaced with a new one.

with highlights

Puncture repair with wicks the fastest and easiest way . So much so that you can do it yourself in a couple of minutes and anywhere. You just need to have the facility to re-inflate the tire when you're done. The next steps are:

Subscribe to our Youtube channel

  • remove object that punctured the tire. If it is a screw, then it is better to use a screwdriver so as not to damage the tire even more, although this is not essential.
    If there is no object to remove , you will need to find the puncture site , for which a spray with soap and water is useful to see where the air is escaping. Inflate the wheel until there is enough pressure in it and turn the wheel little by little. While doing this, spray the mixture liberally and look for small bubbles that will appear where air is being lost.
  • Use punch slightly enlarge the hole and make it uniform
  • Pass through the wick the needle hole it has handle inserts the wicks . Use a sealant or adhesive, liberally applying it to the wick before inserting it.
  • Insert descriptor with wick in hole, turn a quarter of a turn and pull until it cuts the wick and two pieces remain inside
  • cut both ends of the roving outside the circle with a knife, cutter or scissors. Leave it at the same level so that nothing sticks out.

with patch

Fixing patch is slightly more laborious and requires removing the tire from the rim. That's why it's not exactly a method that can be used by anyone, anywhere. There are several types of patch: self-adhesive , C stick to the part of mushroom type , etc. The mushroom type requires the same hole expansion process as the wick, but otherwise all heads have the same steps to place :

  • Locate puncture . If the object that pierced the wheel is not there and you can't see it with the naked eye, use the same soapy water trick as in the wick method.
  • Remove the wheel from the rim a
  • scratch the surface around the puncture with a special blade and concrete liquid .
  • If it is a mushroom stain, enlarge hole to the size indicated for the tail of the patch. Brush and vacuum up the rubber dust that is generated in the process.
  • sand the surface where you are going to patch with a specific polisher so that only the new rubber is visible. Clean and vacuum again to remove rubber dust.
  • Apply adhesive if included in the puncture repair kit you are using. That is, if these are not self-adhesive patches. If it's a mushroom, stick the glue in and through the hole.
  • Apply patch inserting the tail through the hole if it is a mushroom. Press it well over the entire surface. It is convenient to go from the inside to the outside so that there are no air bubbles inside.
  • Apply sealant around the edges of the patch, if included in the kit you are using.
  • Put the tire on the rim and inflate it .

Is it safe to repair a tire?

They are safe both the methods we have mentioned to you and the vulcanization method that is done in workshops. What is really important is that whatever method is chosen, applies well . If you don't think you can do it perfectly, it's best to leave it in the hands of the master. professional .

It is also important to know which punctures can be repaired and by what method. Otherwise, they will not be safe. Remember these tips :

  • Repair only punctures in tread y not too close to the edge of . Never on the sides of a tire.
  • if hole what was done with tire more than 6 mm is not recommended fix it.
  • Do not repair anything other than a puncture. If the tire is cracked, it will have to be replaced. for new.
  • Do not use the leak method if the tire is heavily worn. because more likely to lose pressure
  • Do not use the Mushroom Repair Method if the injection angle is higher than the manufacturer's specification. Usually this is up to 15 or 25 degrees of inclination. You can test this by using the corner holder and inserting the awl a little to see how far it leans.

Safety problems may occur later than if the tire pressure is not set to the correct level. Use the values that are on the sticker on your car. In the vast majority of models, it is located on the fuel tank cap, on the inner frame of the driver's door, or in the owner's manual.

If you want make it perfect , you must keep in mind that the sticker values are cold. If you've stopped to prepare for a puncture during your ride, it's okay to have 9 tires0005 hot , which is 0.3 bar more than stated by the manufacturer. In the following video you can see how to perfectly tune them in both situations:

Article subject:

Tire numbers and letters: what do they mean?

How much does it cost to repair a flat tire?

if you want to do it yourself it will cost you the cost of the repair kit you want to buy. There are very cheap ones, like a universal repair kit. Mingwen or emergency puncture repair kit Easy. There are also more complex ones, such as a tire repair kit. MVPower and there are even those that come with CO2 pumps for re-inflation of tyres, such as the professional kit. likota.

If you go to a specialist workshop the price is also not high. usually costs from 15 to 20 euros Now, beware of going to non-specialized workshops because in some the price may rise. There are people who use a recall or other excuse to ask for a puncture repair or simply go there out of ignorance. In these cases, the bill can go up to 40 or 50 euros because they charge you the minimum wage, which is usually half an hour or an hour.

Do not drive with a flat tire

We must clearly understand that after we have punctured a tire, it is necessary to immediately stop the car so as not to drive with a flat tire and put the spare tire in place. if we distribute several kilometers with a flat tire of we will completely damage the tire and may even damage the rim of our car.

Why should I be careful not to damage a punctured wheel if it needs to be completely replaced? It depends, in many cases, on punctures can be fixed with firmware , with which we can continue to use this tire without any problems until it becomes necessary to replace it due to wear.

If we drive a few kilometers with a punctured tire, the only thing we can do is to make a groove on each side by stepping on them with the edges of the rim. If this is seen in the workshop where we are going, it is very likely that we will be told that they cannot repair the puncture because the tire is damaged and it is not safe to drive with it. The solution is to put on a new tire or even both tires on the same axle .

Therefore, the best course of action in the event of a puncture is to stop the vehicle immediately to change the damaged tire and take it to the workshop to see if it can be repaired. If we do this, we can save a lot of money, which we will definitely appreciate.

How to change a flat tire step by step

In the next video we will explain how to change a wheel well and very easily . While many think it is a matter of strength, it requires more knowledge than anything else. A person weighing 50 kg will cope without problems, except that when they put the wheel on us, they did it like a donkey or the bolts jammed due to corrosion.

You will see that there are only two or three tips to remember. always do it right . For example, tightening bolts always follows one of the opposite ones, using your foot if you don't have the strength, and little else. On the video you can see how it's done:

Or, if you prefer, we will notify you in writing:

  • stop in a safe place never on the road. If you are near him, place a triangle to warn other drivers. If you are on a dual carriageway, place a triangle facing each direction of travel (both on your side of the road). Wear a reflective vest and never work on the road.
  • Loosen the bolts (screws) before jacking up the vehicle . If you don't have enough strength, you can try the trick of adjusting the key well and climbing on top of it so that your weight does the job (jump a little carefully if necessary). If you don't want to do this and know you'll have a hard time doing it, remember that a wrench with a long handle will help you get the leverage and therefore require less effort.
  • Lift the machine . The correct location is usually indicated by an arrow or notches under the vehicle. Infographics also usually come with the car. The usual thing is that under the car there is a kind of rail where the head of a cat with a valley should fit. To hit the first time, better adjust it and go turn the cat around. When it hits the ground, make sure it settles.
  • End Completely remove the bolts and remove the wheel. It will cost you a little, because you have previously relaxed them. Keep their bolts in a safe place.
  • We put the wheel under the car on the rim in case the cat fails. That way, if the car falls, you won't damage anything and you can put the jack back on to pick it up again.
  • Install spare wheel . To make it perfect, you have to follow the star pattern, that is, tighten the bolts opposite the previous one. On a wheel with five bolts, if you number them in order starting with any one of them, the order to tighten them would be: 1, 3, 5, 2, and 4. Tighten them just the right amount.
  • put cat , tighten the bolts, this time firmly, also following the same star pattern, and go to the workshop to fix the flat tire.

Keep Your Valuables

Routine maintenance or professional repairs - our experts' advice will help you keep your Volkswagen in top condition for many years to come.

The price of a car and the safety of driving on it depend on its maintenance and regular care.

Safety when traveling long distances

Tips before traveling long distances.

Safe driving training, fun for kids or just gymnastics - we have some useful tips for you.

Did you know that

  • almost 50% of drivers spend 10 or more hours driving continuously
  • about 80% drive a car for an average of 8 hours without a break, even if there is a driver nearby who can change them
  • 30% of motorists traveling by car drive with little or no sleep.
  • Approximately 20% of drivers do not eat anything for 7 hours from the start of the trip.

Things you need to know

Worn-out brushes that don't work well when it rains make it difficult to navigate the terrain, especially when you're on vacation. Discharged starter batteries often cause a car accident.

In this section you will get many useful tips on battery care, information on choosing coolant and spark plugs and tires.

Engine oil level

Low engine oil alarm connected to the hood opening limit switch. The logic here is as follows: the control system assumes that when you see a low oil level signal, you open the hood, check the oil level, add oil to the engine, close the hood. The hood opening-closing cycle is interpreted by the system as a fact of adding oil, and the process of processing the sensor readings starts anew after the vehicle starts moving. Therefore, even if the oil is not topped up, the low engine oil alarm is interrupted for a while after the hood is opened/closed.

We remind you that the manufacturer strongly recommends checking the oil level at every refueling, despite the presence of this alarm.

Batteries - always ready to go

Discharged starter batteries often cause a car accident. In most cases, unattended batteries become unusable, the acid level in which is clearly at a minimum. Their charge is enough to start the engine, and the driver does not know about the upcoming replacement. And in the summer, for example, in a traffic jam, when forced cooling of the radiator is turned on, the driver can turn off the engine, and there may be problems starting the engine.

Engine does not start

Cause: The fan and other consumers have taken all the power from the generator while the engine was idling. By looking in advance at the acid level indicator on your battery, you could foresee its failure. Is your battery acid level low? Then come to your nearest Volkswagen service. Checking the battery will give an accurate answer to the question of what will help solve the problem: qualified service or replacement.

Our advice

When replacing, choose genuine Volkswagen long life lead-calcium batteries. Our batteries are characterized by maximum power, high reliability during cold starts, low fluid consumption and extended service life. We are pleased to inform you about this innovative LongLife technology, which can also be used on previous Volkswagen models.

Coolant G 12 Plus. Cold and heat

G 12 Plus

Antifreeze is a special liquid added to the engine water cooling system that protects the engine and cooling system from overheating. Due to the variety of modern materials and high engine power, we place special demands on these fluids. Coolant G 12 plus is heat resistant up to +135 °C and, thanks to its anti-corrosion composition, is well suited for cooling light alloy parts such as aluminum cylinder heads. A well-cooled cylinder head extends engine life. In addition, G 12 plus works well in cast iron motors and mixes seamlessly with legacy G 11 and G 12 fluids.

New brushes for better visibility

The poor performance of worn brushes in the rain makes it difficult to navigate the terrain, especially when you are on vacation. New brushes and a special glass cleaner will help solve the problem. We recommend using genuine Volkswagen glass cleaners for glass cleaning. The concentrate is added to the water in the washer reservoir in the proportion indicated in a special table, and the active detergent washes the front and rear windows of the car to a shine. In addition, Volkswagen Genuine Scheibenklar glass cleaner is especially effective if your car's windshield washer is equipped with fan nozzles. Enjoy all the benefits of cleaning systems. In the warm season, when hard-to-remove stains appear on the glass, for example, traces of insects, we recommend using a particularly strong Scheibenklar Sommer.

Did you know that…

  • On most Volkswagen models, the only way to move the wipers away from the windshield is by moving them to the "service position", otherwise the edge of the hood gets in the way?
  • To switch the wipers to the service position, after turning off the ignition, press the wiper mode switch knob in the “Down” direction.
  • They will assume a vertical position in which nothing will prevent them from being moved away from the glass. You can return the wipers to their normal position in the same way, before turning on the ignition.
  • Do not turn on the ignition while the wipers are in the service position - they may move and damage the rear edge of the hood.

Knowledge never hurts

Tires

Your vehicle is factory fitted with optimum tires for use under normal driving conditions. When replacing tires, do not change their dimensions, type, load and speed indexes without first consulting a Volkswagen Service Center. Tires not only make contact between the car and the road, but also allow it to accelerate, turn and stop.

As with other components of your car during operation, it is necessary to monitor the tires.

Tire pressure

Affects driving safety, comfort, tire life and fuel consumption.

  • Always maintain the correct tire pressure according to the manufacturer's instructions, including the spare wheel;
  • Monitor tire pressure with a good pressure gauge;
  • Check tire pressure at least twice a week;
  • Only check the pressure when the tires are "cold";
  • Make sure that all tires have protective caps, avoid accumulation of dirt and dust in the nipples;
  • Visually inspect the tires for deep cuts, cracks, blisters (hernias), protruding threads and metal wire of the cord structure, foreign objects (nails, etc.). If you notice this, then replace the wheel with a spare one or contact the Authorized Dealer for help;
  • Incorrect tire pressure may be the result of foreign object damage to the tire.

Tire pressure monitoring

The tire pressure monitoring function without wheel pressure sensors is an extension of the ABS function. This function recognizes that one of the wheels is flat by determining the difference in the angular speeds of the wheels according to the readings of the ABS instantaneous angular velocity sensors installed on each wheel. That is, if the wheel is flat, its actual diameter will become smaller than that of the other wheels, and it will have to rotate faster than the others. That's why it's important for this feature to work correctly that all tires are the same size and model and are worn to the same extent.

After the defective tire has been repaired and the correct pressure has been established in all wheels, press the button with the tire schematic symbol (this symbol coincides with the warning signal on the instrument panel) and hold it for about two seconds, until a beep sounds. This button does not actually “reset the error”, but starts the so-called basic settings for this function. Normal operation of this function after activating the basic setting mode with this button is restored after about 10 km of driving on a level road with a minimum of sharp turns. On a rough road with plenty of turns, this system will need a long distance for "self-learning". You should not "reset" the flat tire warning until the cause is corrected - by doing so, you violate the correct operation of this system.

Tire wear indicators

Each tire has so-called wear indicators located on the side of the tread. The permissible degree of wear of the tire tread is established by the "Safety requirements for the technical condition and methods of verification." The tread height of tires for passenger cars must be at least 1.6 mm, which corresponds to the height of the wear indicators. Tires with excessive wear are prone to punctures. The risk of aquaplaning (loss of control of the car, if it gets into a puddle) is greatly increased.

Tire life

Tire life is highly dependent on your driving style. To prolong the life of your tires, follow these tips:

  • Drive calmly, avoid overloading the tyres, avoid sudden acceleration and braking, avoid sharp turns at high speeds, and avoid hitting curbs. Driving over potholes or any other obstacles at high speed can also cause tire damage;
  • Replace tires regularly, following the factory operating instructions;
  • Follow the correct installation and adjustment of the angles of the wheels, timely balancing, serviceability of the running gear and steering. Incorrect wheel angles and increased play in the chassis and steering can cause accelerated tire wear and reduce traffic safety;
  • Check tires for damage or low pressure.

Regularly visit a nearby Volkswagen Service Center to check the alignment of the wheels and chassis. Qualified specialists of the Service Centers will always help you to keep your car in good condition.
