Firestone Tire and Rubber Company

Firestone Tire and Rubber Company is an American tire company founded by Harvey Firestone in 1900. Initially, tires were produced for fire trucks, and then pneumatic tires began to be produced for carts and cars. With the advent of the wheeled vehicle era, Firestone saw great potential in vehicle tires and became a pioneer in mass-produced tires. Harvey Firestone was personally friendly with Henry Ford and used these connections to become an original equipment supplier for the Ford Motor Company.

Firestone was originally based in Akron, Ohio, which is also home to its main competitor, Goodyear, and two other companies, General Tire and Rubber and BFGoodrich. Founded on August 3, 1900, the company began operations with 12 employees. Firestone and Goodyear have been North America's largest tire suppliers for over 75 years.

In 1906 Henry Ford chose Firestone to supply tires for his model cars.

In 1918 Firestone Tire and Rubber of Canada was incorporated in Hamilton, Ontario. The first Canadian tire rolled off the assembly line on September 15, 1922. During the 1920s, Firestone produced Oldfield tires named after pilot Barney Oldfield.

In 1926 the company opened one of the world's largest rubber plantations, over one million acres (1,560 sq mi; 4,050 km2) in Liberia, West Africa. The same year, the company opened its first Firestone Tire and Service Center (later renamed Firestone Complete Auto Care). Firestone Complete Auto Care is a division of Firestone that offers auto service and repairs, including tires.

In 1927 Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone visited southern California to select locations for new factories. His friends said that Ford wanted to be close to the ocean, he chose Long Beach and offered Firestone as a base for South Gate, California, a small community southeast of downtown Los Angeles. There, Firestone purchased 40 acres (16 ha) of bean fields for his new plant. Architects Curlett and Beelman designed a spectacular four-story stylish complex with its own power plant. One year after the opening of the plant at 19In 28, it doubled its original size and by 1954 had grown to nearly one million square feet (23 acres; 9.3 ha). The city grew around Firestone, its main boulevard was named after Harvey, and Los Angeles became the number one tire market in the country.

By the mid-1970s, Ford and GM were having massive layoffs as Firestone and other manufacturers opened new plants in non-union regions such as Wilson, North Carolina. After a significant downsizing, the South Gate plant was closed at 1980, and 1300 workers were fired. East Los Angeles College proposed a new satellite campus on the site.

In 1928 the company built a plant in Brentford, England (closed in 1979)

In 1936 the company opened a plant in Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis plant, with over 3,000 employees, was the largest tire manufacturer in the world. On July 1, 1963, the company celebrated the production of 100 million tires in Memphis. The Memphis plant was closed at 1982, and most of the factory buildings were demolished.

October 11, 1941 A fire at the Firestone Rubber and Latex plant in Fall River, Massachusetts destroyed 5 of the 8 buildings and destroyed at least 15,000 tons of rubber. Damage from the fire totaled $12 million (equivalent to $163 million in 2019).

During World War II, the company was a contractor for the US military. Firestone was ranked 55th among U.S. corporations in terms of defense manufacturing contract value. At 19In the 1940s, Firestone received a defense contract to manufacture plastic helmet liners.

In 1951 Firestone received a defense contract for components for the MGM-5 Corporal rocket. Firestone received a total of $6,888,796 (equivalent to $55.2M in 2019). Known as the "Army Embryo", it was a surface-to-surface guided missile that could deliver a high-explosive fragmentation warhead up to 75 nautical miles (140 km). It was later modified to be able to carry a nuclear payload for use in case of Cold War fighting in Eastern Europe. Built in southern California, this missile was replaced at 1962 with the MGM-29 Sergeant system.

In 1961 Firestone acquired the Dayton Tire division from Dayco Corporation. Dayco later sued Firestone and Goodyear, alleging that the two companies conspired to monopolize the tire industry in the United States. The US District Court dismissed the lawsuit.

In 1965 Firestone acquired Seiberling Rubber.

In 1972 , Firestone received a ten-year import "concession" from the Kenyan government to secure Firestone's investment in a domestic tire plant, giving it a virtual monopoly. This included both general price and exchange controls. When the 10-year period came to an end at 19In 1979, Firestone responded by increasing production, which made it less attractive to enter the market. Headquarters eventually canceled the expansion and failed negotiations resulted in no further investment.

At the end of 1979 , Firestone brought in John Nevin, the former head of Zenith Electronics, to the presidency to save the company from total collapse. At the time, it was over $1 billion in debt and was losing $250 million a year (equivalent to $2.90, respectively).and $724 million in 2019). Nevin closed nine of the company's seventeen manufacturing plants, including six in one day. Moved the company to Akron in Chicago. He singled out non-tire businesses, including the Firestone Country Club. This was considered a deliberate plan to increase the value of the shares, and it paid off.

In 1988 , after negotiations with Pirelli, Nevin agreed to sell the company to the Japanese company Bridgestone, which was able to buy it for much less than it cost a decade and a half ago. In 2008, the companies celebrated the 20th anniversary of the merger and changed the name of the tire division to Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC. Bridgestone Americas opened a $100 million technology center in Akron in 2012 (equivalent to $112 million in 2019).year ).

In 1988 the company was sold to Japanese Bridgestone Corporation. Bridgestone Americas, which has been the US subsidiary of Japan's Bridgestone since 1992, moved its corporate office to downtown Nashville in October 2017.

In addition to tires, several companies and divisions use the Firestone brand in their name. These companies include Firestone Building Products, LLC, Firestone Industrial Products, LLC, Firestone Complete Auto Care, Firestone Natural Rubber Company, and Firestone Specialty Products. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Firestone Building Products and Firestone Industrial Products operate in 23 US states and ten countries with 11,000 employees worldwide and annual sales in excess of $2. 5 billion.
