ATV Accident Statistics

ATV stands for all-terrain vehicle.  It is a small amphibious vehicle with a seat and handlebars also known as a light utility vehicle (LUV) or a quad bike, with wheels or tractor treads designed to travel on off road terrain.  It is similar to a motorbike with three or four wheels that is intended to be used by a single operator over extremely rough ground, snow and ice, and through shallow water.  When used appropriately and carefully near homes or private property, these vehicles can be very useful, and, when it comes to recreational fun, ATVs are a force to be reckoned with.

With all of these advantages, ATVs appear to be gaining popularity throughout many countries, from one culture to the next, and from generation to generation.  However, these vehicles are deceptively dangerous and if not operated properly, they can be unsafe and pose a threat to yourself and to those around you.   All-Terrain Vehicles are not toys!

The likelihood of collisions on ATVs has increased as the number of vehicles and drivers has increased.  These collisions often involve a driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  Because ATVs usually lack seat belts, this makes accidents more dangerous.

Most Common Type of ATV Injuries:
  • Head injuries
  • Bruises and cuts
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Orthopedic injuries

Types of ATV accidents:
  • Reckless, careless, or distracted driving
  • Driving too close to another ATV and colliding with it
  • Minors driving without the guidance of an adult
  • Performing dangerous stunts and maneuvers
  • Driving in unknown environments or terrain
  • Another risk that is rarely discussed is the possibility of a product or part defect, or even a faulty design that can cause an accident.  Several major ATV manufacturers have experienced this and have at one time or another issued a recall for the purpose of correcting the problem.

ATV Accident Statistics:

Every year, approximately 135,000 people are injured, and over 700 are killed in ATV accidents. Sadly, children under the age of 16 account for a large majority of casualties.

To avoid accidents and causalities, the drivers of ATVs should always follow all recommended safety guidelines.

ATV Injury and Death Statistics Are Alarming | SMT Legal

All-terrain vehicles are fun. In fact, they are a part of the culture in many areas across the country. When used safely and correctly, they can be a great tool to use around a person’s property. They can also provide plenty of recreational fun. However, there are times when ATVs can be dangerous and can result in an ATV accident.

Unfortunately, there are times when another person’s negligence causes injuries or fatalities on an ATV. Sometimes, people are hurt while riding on another person’s personal ATV. Other times, the fault lies with a company that does not take proper safety measures. If you need a Pittsburgh ATV accident lawyer, you can count on the team at SMT Legal to be by your side.

What Are ATV Accident Statistics?

The Consumer Protection Safety Commission keeps track of all of the injury and death reports related to ATVs. For the latest reporting year, 2017, we know that there were:

  • 93,800 ATV injuries treated in emergency rooms throughout the country
  • There is an average of 500-600 fatalities each year due to ATV accidents
  • A significant percentage of fatalities occur in children under 16 years of age

From 1982 to 2017, there were 15,250 reported ATV deaths in the United States and millions of injuries. According to the CPSC, there have been 702 reported deaths in that time frame in Pennsylvania, second only to Texas when it comes to fatalities. These vehicles, though safe when used appropriately, come with extreme risks to the operators. There is virtually no protection for riders. Injuries from these crashes can result in:

  • Spinal cord damages
  • Severe brain/head trauma
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations
  • Massive internal injuries or bleeding

These injuries require immediate emergency medical care and often result in a person needing extended rehabilitation time in order to make a full recovery. Sometimes, though, an ATV crash victim is left permanently disabled.

Why They Happen

It is vital that any company operating these vehicles for recreational use follow all safety precautions. They should never allow a child to use an ATV and should always ensure that every rider is properly trained to use the vehicles. Helmets and other safety gear should be used. The ATVs themselves must be regularly inspected and maintained.

Trail operators should ensure that the trail being used is well-maintained and that riders are aware of any hazardous conditions.

Accident statistics in Russia

In Russia, since 2007, there has been a steady downward trend in the number of accidents with victims. In 2000, there were 157.6 thousand such accidents, but then, due to the rapid growth in car use, their number in 2005 exceeded 220 thousand.

- transport accidents with victims, as a result of which 23,114 people died, 231 were injured and injured 197 people. For comparison, in 2005 the number of road accidents was 223,342 (a decrease of 17.6%), 33,957 people died (-31.9%), 274,865 people were injured (-15.9%).

Mortality from traffic accidents in 2015 - 15.8 per 100 thousand population. For comparison, in 2005 this figure was 23.6 per 100,000 people.

Moscow Region (1. 3 thousand dead) and Krasnodar Territory (1.1 thousand) are in the lead. 8.6% of traffic accidents were caused by drunk drivers (in 2014 - 9,4%).

World statistics

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide, more than 3,000 people die every day as a result of traffic accidents and about 100,000 are seriously injured. Every year, 20 million to 50 million people are injured in road traffic accidents, and more than 1.25 million people (186 thousand of them children) become victims, this figure has remained virtually unchanged since 2007.

Road crashes are the main cause of death people aged 15 to 29years. The least protected road users are motorcyclists (23% of all road deaths), pedestrians (22%) and cyclists (4%). 90% of road traffic fatalities occur in low- and middle-income countries (Africa and Asia).

Road safety

According to the latest published data from WHO, China and India are the leaders in terms of the number of deaths in traffic accidents: in 2013, 261 thousand and 208 thousand people died in car accidents, respectively. At the same time, in terms of the ratio of the number of deaths to the population, these countries are considered relatively safe. In China in 2013, 18.8 people died per 100,000 population, in India - 16.6 people. In Russia in 2013 this figure was 18.9(in 2015 - 15.8).

The safest, according to statistics, are the roads of Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, where this figure does not exceed 10 people per 100 thousand people. The lowest rates are in Sweden and the UK (2.8 and 2.9 deaths per 100,000 population, respectively). In the United States in 2013, the rate was 10.6 per 100,000 population. The only country in the world where more than 40 deaths on the roads per 100 thousand of the population were recorded is Libya (73.4). Between 30 and 40 deaths were recorded in Iran, Thailand, sub-Saharan Africa.

Statistics show how much the situation with safety on Russian roads has improved. In the past 2021, it shows a significant decrease in all major accident rates. And this optimistic trend has been confidently maintained for the ninth year in a row. The number of human lives saved is multiplying. In 2021, the number of road traffic accidents in which people were killed or injured decreased by another 8.1%. Social and transport risks were even lower than predicted values.

Alexander Korolkov

According to official accident statistics, in 2021 there were 133,331 road accidents with injuries. And this is 8.1% less than a year earlier. The number of people killed and injured in these accidents decreased by 7.9% and 8.3%, respectively. In order to understand the significance of these figures and realize the rate of decline, it makes sense to go back to 2012. This is a kind of reference point for road safety in modern Russia. So, in 2012, 203,597 accidents occurred on the roads of the country, in which 27 991 people and 258,618 were injured. Note that since the same 2012, the number of car parks has increased from 47.88 to 60.14 million. And the decline in accident rates all these years has been against the backdrop of a continuous increase in the number of vehicles on the roads.

There are more vehicles on our roads, while the traffic risk, which is the main indicator of the federal project "Road Safety" of the national project "Safe Quality Roads" and objectively reflects the situation with road safety, continues to decrease. Thus, at the end of 2021, the level of transport risk amounted to 2.52 deaths per 10 thousand vehicles, which is lower than the previous year’s figure of 2.6, and also less than the predicted one of 2.58.

Installation of lighting, road signs, markings, optimization of speed limits at the entrances to unregulated pedestrian crossings has reduced the number of collisions

A decrease in the number of accidents, as well as the number of people killed and injured in them, is observed in the vast majority of regions. The largest decrease in the three main indicators was achieved in Mordovia, the Udmurt and Karachay-Cherkess Republics, the Khabarovsk Territory, the Arkhangelsk, Lipetsk and Oryol regions.

True, an increase in the number of deaths was recorded in 25 regions. It is relatively small, but when it comes to human lives, the smallest figure is of great importance. Each case is analyzed, the causes and conditions under which the accidents occurred are analyzed, the centers of accidents are identified, and a list of necessary measures is compiled to eliminate risk factors.

As for the types of accidents, the most frequent last year were vehicle collisions - 44.7%, as well as collisions with pedestrians - 26.8%. They account for the largest number of deaths. However, as we have already said, road traffic injuries are steadily declining.

Thus, the number of pedestrian collisions in 2021 decreased by almost 8%. They killed 13.8% fewer people than a year earlier. And the number of those injured decreased by 7. 3%. New lighting lines, road signs, markings, optimization of speed limits at the entrances to unregulated pedestrian crossings - all this had a positive effect on the rate of reduction in this type of accident. The large-scale educational work carried out by the State Traffic Inspectorate among all categories of road users has definitely played a big role. In particular, the all-Russian social project "Your move, pedestrian!", which was launched last summer, is aimed at improving the safety of pedestrians and reducing their mortality in traffic accidents.

The number of traffic accidents related to driving into the oncoming lane increased by less than 0.4%, while the number of people killed and injured in them decreased last year. In some regions, for example, in the Smolensk region, there was a decrease in the number of deaths in such accidents by 68.4%. However, nationwide, every sixth participant in an accident in 2021 died in accidents related to driving into oncoming traffic. The situation is given the most serious attention. Everywhere on the roads, work is underway to install dividing fences. Including cable, which are more compact, easier to install and repair. Barrier fences are installed on sections of federal highways of the first category with four lanes or more.

The number of traffic accidents involving driving into the oncoming traffic lane increased by less than 0.4%, however, the number of people killed and injured in them decreased last year

The total number of accidents involving children under 16 decreased by 4.7%. If we take into account that the figures are compared with the previous year, when the traffic intensity was much lower due to sanitary restrictions, these are very good figures. The State traffic inspectorate pays great attention to the prevention of child road traffic injuries, the prevention of which is the main direction of the federal project "Road Safety" of the national project "Safe Quality Roads". Every year, the State traffic inspectorate conducts more than 30 thousand preventive measures: planned raids, thematic events, classes with children, parents and teachers. Large-scale social campaigns are being carried out jointly with educational, health and public organizations. In the struggle to save the lives of our children, all the world's positive experience is used, all tools with proven effectiveness.

The number of traffic accidents involving drivers with signs of intoxication has significantly decreased - by 17.8%. In these incidents, 649 lives were saved. The downward trend in this type of accident has continued for several years. The strengthening of responsibility for drunk driving and the improvement of the procedure and methods of medical examination are having an effect, but the main thing is the propaganda work of the State traffic inspectorate, which is carried out in close cooperation with society. As an indicator of this work, we can take the data of the State traffic inspectorate, according to which almost three-quarters of reports of cases of a drunk person driving come from citizens. Through the official website of the State traffic inspectorate or through the "hot line" - the forms of interaction are different.
