Tires are a big part of the cost of owning a car, and the range of tire prices doesn’t make it easier to budget for them.

The price of tires depends on several factors, including how they perform in certain weather conditions, how well they handle, and what type of terrain they can manage.

Each type of tire comes with its own price range. And while some tires might induce sticker shock, plenty of affordable options are on the market.

Factors affecting cost

Tires are made of varying compounds and have different treadwear ratings. These ratings tell you how long the tires will likely last. Tires are usually categorized according to the conditions in which they work best. Here are some of the common types of tires, and the factors that may affect their cost.

Weather performance. Tires are categorized as summer, winter or all-season. Summer and winter tires are designed to perform in certain types of weather, and all-season tires find a balance between summer and winter. All-season tires tend to be the cheapest option, and summer tires tend to be the most expensive. Winter tires fall somewhere in the middle.

Comfort. Some types of tires, such as touring tires, are designed to give you a smoother ride. Comfort tires may have the same performance potential as other tires — for example, they may have the same wet and dry braking capabilities as all-season tires — but they tend to cost more because they offer a more comfortable ride.

Terrain. All-terrain tires are generally more expensive than standard highway tires because they have tread designed to let you go off-road. While you can get about 40,000 miles out of an all-terrain tire, it’s likely to wear down more quickly and need replacing sooner than a highway tire.

Performance. Designed for sports cars, performance tires let you take corners tightly and stop on a dime. They’ll give you that fast-driving experience, but you’ll pay more for performance tires.

Average cost of tires

The cost of tires can vary widely by type. Discount Tire, a national tire retailer, breaks down the average cost of tires by type and wheel size. Here is the range of prices and median cost per tire for each wheel size:

  • 12-inch to 15-inch wheels. Tires often run $80 to $150, with a median price of $115. These tires are common for compact cars.

  • 16-inch to 20-inch wheels. Tires of this size generally cost $100 to $400, with a median price of $250. These tires are common for SUVs, crossovers, vans and trucks.

  • 18-inch to 26-inch wheels. Tires often cost $140 to $500, with a median price of $320. These tires are common for larger trucks and utility vehicles.

The cheaper the tire within a certain group, the less likely it is to perform as well or last as long. Economical options are available, but research the quality of any tire you’re considering before buying it.

When having new tires installed, the total average cost for labor is $50 to $300, according to CarRoar.com. The labor cost can vary by vehicle and tire size: The bigger the tires or more complicated the install, the higher the labor charge. For example, many shops charge more to mount low-profile tires.

Having new tires installed includes several steps. Your total labor cost is likely to include the time to perform the labor, mounting and balancing of the new tires, and disposal fees to get rid of your old tires.

  • 205 - tread width (the surface on which the tire is in contact with the road - the "pattern" is applied to it), in millimeters,
  • 65 - tire profile height or, otherwise, the ratio of the tread height to its width; the higher the value, the higher the profile and the visually greater distance from the road to the metal surface of the wheel ("disk"). In usual millimeters, this will be: 205 × 0.65 \u003d 133.25 mm,
  • R16 - "radial" tire (in principle, most tires are now radial), and "16" is the landing diameter of the wheel ("disc" - metal or cast).

After you have decided on the dimension: whether it is the same size, or different, but with the same landing radius, or with a different one, but then you have to buy the appropriate wheels ("discs"), we proceed to the selection of the best summer tires for your car.

Tread

Summer tire tread pattern can be symmetrical non-directional, directional or asymmetric. The first option is considered the most versatile for the city and the highway. Versatility adds to them and the fact that the tires can be easily interchanged, this does not degrade their properties. With directional symmetry, wet contact is greatly improved. But you need to put them strictly in the direction of rotation. An asymmetric pattern can also be called universal - the characteristics of such a tire are highly dependent on what engineers have invested in it. For example, part of the picture may be responsible for working on dry pavement, and the other - on wet pavement. Install such tires carefully, based on the markings on the wheel.

Maximum speed

The speed at which you can drive on a particular summer tire depends on the speed index of a particular model. It is indicated by English letters from M (130 km / h) to Y (300 km / h). Tires with maximum performance have a high coefficient of grip with the road and a minimum braking distance. But, of course, such wheels will look logical on the new Mercedes, and not on the urban Solaris.

Ride and acoustic comfort

When choosing new summer tires, remember that good handling often comes with a harsh road response. And vice versa - soft tires that swallow pits and markings can break even in a simple turn at moderate speed. So choose a tire carefully, looking not only at tests on the Internet, but also at the reviews of real motorists.

How quiet your car's interior is depends not only on soundproofing, but also on tires. Summer ones, of course, are much quieter than winter ones, but there are also loud models. Sometimes the tire starts to click because of the projector, or rather, the features of its pattern, into which small stones can be packed.

There are two things to distinguish here - the wear resistance of the projector and how the tire withstands road adversity. With the first one, everything is more or less clear - a hard tire most likely goes through more, and if you are a fan of “sinking” or arranging a burnout, then the rubber can go away in a season.

Pay attention to how strong the sidewall of the tire is. Side cuts when parking are not uncommon, and repairing this is often impossible - you will have to buy a new tire. They are not suitable for all car models, but if it is possible to put them, then do not save.

The whole truth about Chinese tires. Is it worth buying tires from China?

Quite often, Chinese goods raise doubts among buyers. People are not sure if they are worth buying, because there is an opinion about their low quality, poor raw materials, and so on. It is noteworthy that Chinese rubber is no exception.

Motorists are especially careful when choosing winter and summer tires, as they will be responsible for the grip of the car when driving on slippery, snowy or wet areas. Consequently, the requirements for rubber are increased.

However, most want to find good but cheap wheels. In this regard, the demand for Chinese products is high, despite the stereotypes that have formed around the Chinese tire industry.

In fact, now goods from China are coming, if not high quality, then at least not inferior to European, American, Japanese counterparts.

Peculiarities of the rubber market in China

If it is written on the rubber that it is made in China, it is impossible to talk about its high or low quality. No one argues, it’s not difficult to hit a low-grade tire. A lot depends on production. To date, there are approximately 500 enterprises in China engaged in the production of tires. And this is about 20-30 percent of the total world wheel factories. Favorable working conditions for foreign manufacturers in China have led leading companies to move their own production to China. And this applies not only to tire manufacturers. A number of brands have launched the production of their products at Chinese enterprises. Labor is cheaper there, raw materials are more accessible, and taxes have to be paid much less than in their native country. You shouldn't go far. Companies such as Pirelli and Michelin have built their factories in the Land of the Rising Sun. At the same time, do not think that their products have not become cheaper because of this. Therefore, do not be surprised that for Chinese-made Michelin tires you will be asked for a tidy sum. It would seem that products are made in China, but they are expensive. Their goal is to create a product that will not differ in quality from world leaders, but at the same time make products more affordable for customers. Obviously, under such conditions, the recognized leaders will have serious problems that are of little concern to the Chinese side.

But there are some disadvantages in production in China. Some factories blindly, superficially copy well-known brands of rubber. That is, they label them as branded products, but in reality they use outdated technologies, low-quality raw materials. That is, the production of fakes does not stop like that. Consequently, buyers purchase such products, as a result of which they are disappointed in the eminent manufacturers, thinking that this set of rubber was produced from their factory.

Official manufacturing companies from China

According to official statistics, more than ten companies are now engaged in the production of Chinese winter and summer tires. Moreover, we are talking about those enterprises whose products meet strict European and American standards.

Some of them are gradually gaining momentum in popularity in the world. So they should be discussed separately.

Let's start with the Ling Long brand, which is owned by a national corporation called Shandong Linglong Rubber. Their tires, which are of Chinese origin, have appeared for a long time. At the same time, the company at the dawn of its work produced only rubber intended for special equipment and trucks. Soon, the production of summer and winter tires was launched, which is now worn by many car owners.
