The MX vs ATV series isn't a new one by any means, and has been around for quite some time. Saying that, I have never really given the series much in the way of attention, aside from playing a 360 release some time ago. As much as I like racing games, I go through phases of playing them until my fingers bleed, and then focusing on say, RPG's for a while. So imagine my excitement when I received a code via email. I had looked at some game play footage, and gotten quite excited at the prospect of giving it some welly on dirt bikes and ATV's.
So, how has the series fared with it's latest release, this time on Xbox One. The latest tech in a home console, surely it is going to look absolutely amazing and play like a dream, right? Well, that's where the problem lies. It is not the perfect game by any means, but at the same time, I don't think it is all that bad either. Sure it is a little rough around the edges, and could do with some extra polish, but does i have that cheeky charm to keep you playing it, or at least enjoy what time you spend playing it? That question goes to the individual that you are. If you are one of these gamers that must have 60fps, an the most insane graphics known to man, then you may not be interested, or impressed if you do play it. On the flip side of the coin, if you are like me, and not too far away form 40 years old, then you will remember a time of the Commodore 64 or ZX Spectrum, and the amazing HD graphics they...sorry, I can't even make a joke about that. The graphics were bad looking back,and I guess the point I am attempting to convey, is that for me, graphics don't affect my ability to enjoy a game.
MX vs ATV does have some issues that could have been rectified before release sure, but I found my experience an interesting one to say the least.
The Career mode has enough events for you to participate in, with both MX bikes and ATV quads, giving you a generous amount of value for money there. Considering it has been given a price tag of just £23.99, that is actually not a bad deal. Fair play to Nordic Games, I for one am impressed, as releases in recent years have been more than that. But what else do you get for your money? Online MP sadly doesn't cut it. Several times I attempted to play with a friend, and we just couldn't get a game going. I know my internet isn't that great, even with Fibre, but I can still get connections on other games. Ooops, that does not cut it well with the Beaver here.
Moving on from the MP component, we have Single player option to venture into. Freeride. A series of tracks, and open sandbox areas to race about in and throwing stunts in mid air, but very little else to entice you into actually staying in there. Sure it is a place you can grab a few achievements away from the AI, like pulling wheelies and stoppies without having to worry about collisions and losing a race, but the incentive just isn't there.
You do get Rhythm races, which is a little bit interesting, but again, not a game mode that has been given much in the way of any expansion on what is there. Could have been incorporated better for sure.
You have the option to customise your bikes, quads and rider from the main menu, and these are unlocked from finishing in the top 3 of each race. This offers an incentive, as the better upgrades you unlock, the better your performances will be. Works well, and no complaints from me here.
The one complaint from those in the know, will be the DLC. So many have complained about the lackluster offering of the Fallout 4 Season Pass, and the infamous price increase to offer us what some call "lame" content. But over here on MX vs ATV Supercross Encore, you can buy individual DLC packs, or you can buy the mighty all in one pack that gives you everything for a whopping £44.99! Yes, that is correct. A hefty amount and considering you pay nearly half for the game, I just cannot see people clamouring to buy the DLC for it.
Having a mad day at the office on that one Nordic/Rainbow. Still, you don't have to buy the DLC, not for this game, or any game for that matter. But at least you can buy smaller chunks of it should you so desire.
One noticeable inclusion I really did like, was the arenas, with cheering fans filled to the roof. The races had atmosphere injected into it, and races didn't feel like a chore. I felt as if they were cheering me on, willing me to cross that finish line first, or fall off for what felt like the umpteenth time.
Graphics: Comparing this to the 360 release, and you will not see any difference at all. The texture pop in and clipping just shows a lazy and quick attempt to get the game out in time. If the resolution had been worked on, as well a the aforementioned issue, it would have looked so much better/ I know I said graphics are not an important issue for me, but as I reviewing this title, I have to remain impartial and report the positives and negatives.Rainbow Games could have made better use of the Xbox One with this release, and I am hoping that the next installment will rectify the matter.
But the game isn't a shoddy mess. But does need work.
Music/FX: The helping on rock and pop/punk as background music suit the feel of the game, but none of the tracks blew my mind upon hearing them. I prefer lesser known punk bands that don't regularly appear in games anymore, not even Tony Hawks. Engine noises an crowd cheers aplenty, and it does feel as if you are in an arena. A satisfactory job.
Gameplay: A tricky one to learn from my perspective, as you need to utilise the RS when taking corners, which gives you lean, and you will almost be horizontal on some occasions. A feature I can honestly say, took me a while to get used to. But if you don't make use of it, you will struggle to get anywhere, and fall behind the pack. When making jumps, moving the sticks whilst pressing RB will perform stunts in mid-air. More often than mot, you will come crashing down to earth and fall off your bike. The slow and cumbersome nature of this meant I rarely used this feature in game/ Which is a shame as this could have been a lot of fun.
Achievements: With a boost partner, you could get all but one MP achievement done and out the way. The 12 player race achievement is a nightmare to get done and out the way. The SP achievements however, will require some work as there is a lot for completing races. There are some miscellaneous ones too, but nothing that will give you a hard time, At the time of writing, I have 415/1000g unlocked, and not really had any trouble.
Overall: Some people have been left feeling disappointed with it, as it does feel rushed. But for those who are new to the series, or have not played for a while, you may just enjoy it. I know I did, and I will be heading back in to finish off career mode at some point in the future. Go in with an open mind, and maybe with a friend, and some MP action may just keep thing interesting for you. It's not that bad a game, and I have had some fun. Needs a bit of work, yes it does. But Rainbow and Nordic can hopefully take the feedback and next time they release a game in the series, they will have ironed out the problems and will give us a game to blow our gamer panties off.
I would love to see a track editor of some sort implemented, as this could add a breath of fresh air into the title and give it a new lease of life.
