Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard Review (Oct 2022)

The Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard is a basic, no-fee credit card that offers 4% cash back at Canadian Tire and 5¢ per liter savings on gas at Canadian Tire gas stations. However, the card falls short in a number of key areas, and lacks the large bonuses and rewards available from other Canadian cards.

Instead, we recommend applying for one of American Express’ low-fee cards, such as the Marriott Bonvoy Card or the Cobalt Card. Both offer impressive welcome bonuses (worth $1,000 or more) plus far more benefits than the Triangle Mastercard, making them better value in both the short-term and the long-term.

Features Of The Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard

Here are the key features of the Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard:

CT Money earned on purchases at Canadian Tire and other select retailers4%
CT Money earned on grocery purchases1. 5%
CT Money earned on other purchases0.8%
Savings per litre at Canadian Tire Gas+ gas stations
Foreign Transaction Fee2.5%
Cash Advance Fee$4
Annual fee$0

As you can see, the key features all revolve around Canadian Tire: you earn 1.5% back in CT Money (Canadian Tire Money) on grocery purchases and 4% back on purchases at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s Work Wearhouse, Sports Experts, Hockey Experts, Sports Rousseau, L’Entrepôt du Hockey, and L’Équipeur. You also save 5¢ per litre on gas, though only at Canadian Tire Gas+ gas stations.

The other fees to be aware of are the $4 cash advance fee and 2.5% foreign transaction fee, which make it an expensive card for using abroad. The Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard does not carry an annual fee.

Reasons I Don’t Recommend The Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard

The Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard may sound compelling at the outset, but in reality, it’s not as good as many other Canadian credit cards. Here are just a few reasons why I can’t recommend this card:

1. No welcome bonus

Perhaps the most obvious drawback of the Triangle Mastercard is that it doesn’t come with any welcome bonus. Welcome bonuses on great cards are often worth $500 or more, and really exceptional cards carry welcome bonuses that are worth even more.

For example, the welcome bonus on the Amex Cobalt Card is 30,000 MR points (worth $500+), while the welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Card is 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (worth $1,000+).

2. Extremely low earn rate

While it may sound enticing that you earn 4% CTM on Canadian Tire purchases, the earn rate on other non-grocery purchases is just 0.8%, which is extremely low. To put it in perspective, you can earn up to 10% back on your spending with the American Express Cobalt Card.

3. You can only use your CTM at Canadian Tire

Most credit cards offer a wide variety of ways in which you can use your rewards: for travel, as cash against your statement balance, and more. But with the Triangle Mastercard, you can only use your rewards at Canadian Tire. If you don’t shop at Canadian Tire regularly, then, this is definitely not the card for you.

4. There aren’t many Gas+ gas stations

There are only about 300 Canadian Tire Gas+ gas stations across all of Canada, and if you don’t live near one of them, you lose the primary benefit of this card. Even if you do live near a Gas+ gas station, though, gas prices there tend to be about 2-3¢ higher per litre than surrounding gas stations, severely limiting the value of the card.

Overall, the two primary benefits of the Triangle Mastercard—the 0.8% CTM earn rate and the 5¢ per litre gas savings—aren’t that great once you look at them a little more closely. That’s why I can’t recommend this card.

Triangle Mastercard vs. American Express Cards

#1 The Cobalt Card

The Triangle Mastercard is a great card, but the American Express Cobalt Card is even better. That's partly because the Cobalt Card offers a 30,000 MR points welcome bonus—a welcome offer worth $1,000-$1,500—and partly due to the card's other features and benefits.

For example, you'll earn 1 MR point—which we value at 2-3 cents apiece—per dollar spent on all card purchases. This means you're essentially getting a 2-3% discount on everything you buy, or $20-30 in rewards for every $1,000 you spend.

Compare that with the 0.8% in CTM you get from the Triangle Mastercard, and the Cobalt Card is giving you 2-4x the rewards. So if you're looking for a low-fee card that gives you more than the Triangle Mastercard, the American Express Cobalt Card is the card for you.

#2 The Marriott Bonvoy Card

The Marriott Bonvoy Card is another great option for anyone interested in the Triangle Mastercard. It comes with a welcome bonus of up to 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (worth $1,000+), and earns 5 points for every $1 spent on eligible travel & gas purchases for your first 3 months of Cardmembership.

On top of that, the Marriott Bonvoy Card comes with 1 free night at a luxury hotel every year plus complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status to take your travels to new heights. Add on the robust travel insurance that comes with the card and it’s clear that the Marriott Bonvoy Card offers far greater value than the Triangle Mastercard.

Canadian Tire Money is Canadian Tire's loyalty program. It consists of company-issued coupons that look like real currency (although the coupons are much smaller than those of the Bank of Canada) and can be used as fiat currency in Canadian Tire stores, but are not considered private currency. .

The banknotes are printed on paper similar to real Canadian currency, and are produced jointly by two of the country's long established printers, the British American Banknote Company (BABN) and the Canadian Bank Note Company (CBN). In fact, some private companies (in Canada) accept cash as a form of payment because many owners of these companies buy from Canadian tires. Canadian Tire money also accumulates on MasterCard and Visa Option credit cards. per month , a dollar coin was launched, its use is similar to coupons.

In April 2018, Canadian Tire announced the transition to a Triangle Rewards card-based rewards program. However, consumers who do not have a card will continue to earn Canadian Tire fiat money.

History and dynamics

A recognizable facet of the CTM is the person depicted on the face of each banknote. According to representatives of Canadian Tire , the fictional character depicted is named Sandy McTire and wears a tom-tom and a stylized waxed moustache. It is not based on any particular person, but we assume that it represents a Scottish worker, a typical 1950 blue collar person in Canada.

It was introduced in 1958 and was inspired by Muriel Billes, wife of the co-founder and first president of Canadian Tire , Alfred J. Billes (in), in response to promotional gifts that many oil companies were offering at the time. She was only available in gas at Canadian Tire bars, but was so successful that it was extended to retail stores in 1961, becoming the most successful loyalty program in Canadian retail history.

Canadian Tire Money is allocated to cash or debit purchases on a pre-tax basis, excluding labor and supplies. The original coupon rate was 5% of the qualifying purchase price, but this was reduced to 3%, then to 1.4%, and is now 0.4%. Customers can use Canadian Tire Money for in-store purchases. Older coupons indicate they can be redeemed at Canadian Tire stores and gas stations; however, coupons issued within at least the past fifteen years do not bear this mark and can therefore only be redeemed in stores.

In Ontario, retail sales tax law and bulletins state that "the coupon must be returned to the franchisee." By sending them to other traders, they were effectively violating Ontario law by not including the discount in the taxable value of the property. Some sellers accepted money Canadian Tire as a rebate but did not calculate or remit sales taxes as required by law and were later fined for this practice; this is a recurring problem.

In 2012, Canadian Tire launched a pilot program to make their money "plastic" to make it a more manageable and easy to use loyalty program.

Names

Five different denominations were issued in 1958 (5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents and $1). Revision 1962 years included the introduction of four lower values (from 1 to 4 cents) and twelve upper values, including 35 and 60 cents. In 1985, a series of six denominations was introduced, including 3 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 40 cents, 50 cents, and $1 . The $2 note was added in 1989 and the 3 cents was discontinued in 1991.

Canadian Tire can also be earned electronically on credit cards Canadian Tire, such as Canadian Tire Options MasterCard . The latter can be used wherever MasterCard is accepted and money is made Canadian Tire wherever it is used to make purchases, anywhere in the world. MC is treated as real currency by the franchise and cannot be directly exchanged for real Canadian currency for customers. If an item purchased with Canadian Tire, money is returned, the customer will receive either Canadian Tire money or the amount shown on the gift card. If an item is purchased with cash or by card and is returned for a refund, the buyer will receive a refund minus the cost of the CTM issued for the item, unless the CTM is also returned.

At As part of the announced deal , Canadian Tire distributed the first coin Canadian Tire , which can be redeemed for the purchase of at least $40 worth of goods. Another similar operation followed in 2010, coinciding with the 2010 Winter Olympics, with a three-piece winter collection. Coins can be spent in the same way as for a classic Community Trademark.

    Canadian Tire money

Canadian Tire money, officially referred to as Canadian Tire "money" or CTM, was a loyalty program for the Canadian retail chain Canadian Tire. It consisted of coupons issued by the company that resembled actual banknotes. It can be used as scrip at Canadian Tire stores, but is not considered private currency. The notes were printed on paper similar to that printed on Canadian currency when they were still paper and were co-produced by two of the country's long established printers, the British American Banknote Company (BABN) and the Canadian Bank Note Company (CBN). . Some private companies in Canada have accepted CTM as payment (see history below) as many such businesses are shopped by Canadian Tire owners. In Canadian tire stores, CTM was accepted for Canadian money at face value, i.e. 1 Canadian tire dollar = 1 Canadian dollar.

In April 2018, Canadian Tire announced it would be moving to Triangle Rewards, a rewards card program. However, consumers without a card could still earn Canadian Tire paper money for a time, however notes are no longer issued or accepted.

    History and dynamics

A recognizable facet of the CTM is the person depicted on the face of each banknote. According to representatives of Canadian Tire, the fictional character represented is referred to as "Sandy" McTire and sports TAM o' Shanter and a stylized waxed moustache. It is not based on a specific person, but it is assumed that he represents a thrifty Scotsman, a layman in Canadian blue collars 1950s.

It was introduced in 1958 and was inspired by Muriel Billes, wife of Canadian Tire co-founder and first president Alfred J. It was only available at Canadian Tire gas bars, but proved so successful that it was extended to retail stores in 1961, becoming the most successful loyalty program in Canadian retail history. The printing on "banknotes" refers to them as "cash bonus coupons".

Canadian Tire money is issued for purchases paid for in cash or debit on a pre-tax gross basis, excluding labor and store supplies. The original coupon rate was 5% of the eligible purchase price, but this was reduced to 3%, then to 1.4% and now stands at 0.4%. Customers can use Canadian Tire money to purchase items from the store. (Older coupons state that they can be redeemed at Canadian Tire stores and gas stations; however, coupons issued within at least the last 15 years do not have this wording and therefore can only be redeemed at stores.)

It can also be used to cover sales tax on purchases as it is accepted as cash after taxes are calculated. In addition, even if a purchase was made entirely with these coupons, it is also considered a cash purchase and additional coupons will be calculated and paid out.

In Ontario, the Retail Sales Tax Law and Bulletin states that "the coupon must be refunded to the franchisee." By sending them to other merchants, the merchants were essentially breaking Ontario law when they did not include the discount in the value of the goods calculated for tax. Some merchants accepted Canadian Tire money as a rebate but then failed to calculate and remit sales taxes as required by law and were later fined for the practice; it's a constant problem.

In 2012, Canadian Tire began a pilot program to turn its money into "plastic" to turn it into a more manageable and trackable loyalty program. The new plastic loyalty card allows you to earn points more than twice as fast as traditional paper money. According to customer service in July 2017, the rate for purchases made with the Canadian Tire "Options" card on in-store items is 4%. The reward rate for purchases in other stores is 0.8%.

    Denominations

Five different denominations were issued in 1958 (5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents and $1). The 1962 revision included the introduction of four lower denominations (from 1 to 4 cents) and 12 higher denominations, including 35 and 60 cents. In 1985, a sequence of six denominations was introduced, including 3 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 40 cents, 50 cents, and $1.

$2 note was added in 1989year, and 3 cents fell in 1991.

CTM coupons are now available in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, as well as one and two dollars. Additionally, Canadian Tire money can be earned electronically on Canadian Tire credit cards such as the Canadian Tire Triangle MasterCard. The latter can be used wherever MasterCard is accepted and earn Canadian Tire money no matter where it is used to make a purchase, anywhere in the world. CTM is treated as real currency by the franchise and cannot be directly exchanged for real Canadian currency for customers. If an item purchased with Canadian Tire money is returned, the buyer receives either Canadian Tire money or the amount shown on the gift card. If an item is purchased with cash or a card and returned for a refund, the buyer will receive a refund minus the cost of the CTM issued for the item, unless the CTM is also returned.

On December 2, 2009, as part of an announced deal, Canadian Tire issued the first Canadian Tire coin redeemable on purchases of at least $40 worth of merchandise. Another similar deal was in 2010 (coinciding with the 2010 Winter Olympics) with a three-coin winter collection. Coins can be spent in the same way as in a regular CTM.

    Use outside of Canadian Tires

    • At the end of 2004 in Moncton, New Brunswick, a total of 11 Canadian Tire Notes were dispensed to several customers at ATMs of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce instead of real ones. They were reimbursed by the bank.
