Only modern high-tech rubber with the required tread depth can provide a minimum braking distance. This parameter is ensured not only by low wear, but also by the use of new engineering developments. For example, when creating VikingContact 7 The developers at Continental have used an active silica rubber compound for optimal grip even in wet conditions. Aquaplaning is a buzzword that many people have heard, but not everyone understands the meaning of. When wheels with a shallow tread depth ("bald" tires) pass over the surface of the water ̆ (when driving into a puddle, for example), the car often loses control due to the fact that a water "pillow" of water forms between the wheels and the road surface , which the tires could not "throw out" from under the wheels. The speed of occurrence and the strength of the effect of such aquaplaning depends on both the depth and the tread pattern, and also on the speed of the car. It is logical that the higher the speed, the less the tire is adjacent to the road. Moreover, the highest probability of this dangerous phenomenon occurs when the water completely covers the road - the more water, the more difficult it is to remove it from under the wheels. In Ukraine, as in European countries, the minimum allowable tread depth is 1.
6 mm. But tests by Continental with various types of tires have shown that a residual tread depth of 4 mm is the minimum that provides an acceptable level of safety. To help the driver determine a safe residual tread depth, Continental install special "projector depth indicators" in the tread grooves 4 mm high (on winter tires) and 3 mm on summer tires. In addition, technology does not stand still and every season manufacturers offer more advanced rubber options. Special elastic polymers allow this winter tire to maintain the necessary softness in winter conditions. The new sipe system helps to effectively remove water from the contact patch, which also improves the tire's braking performance, especially on snowy roads. Vertical sipes direct water into horizontal grooves and from there it enters the main grooves of the tread - this is what Liquid Layer Drainage technology is all about. It helps to prevent the reduction of the braking properties of the tire due to melting water. The 3D groove system that was applied to the tires WinterContact TS 860 , improves grip on snowy surfaces, especially when cornering. Snow is compressed both in the main groove of the tread and in grooves along the entire surface of the tire.
The Snow Curve+ technology allows the tire to transmit high lateral forces, guaranteeing better overall cornering grip.
These parameters are typical for premium tires. It is absolutely undeniable that the longer the service life, the less often you need to change tires, and the higher the strength, the less often you will have to call in for tire fitting. Continental has introduced several technologies that affect cross-country ability. For example, tires with the SSR crash protection system and a reinforced sidewall allow further driving distances of up to 80 km at speeds up to 80 km/h, even in the event of depressurization. Top tire models from Continental are equipped with ContiSeal technology. The inner surface of such tires is covered with a viscous material that tightens emerging punctures (nails and other objects with a diameter of up to 5 mm). The material used prevents pressure loss even if an object flies out of the tire, which means there is no need to immediately stop to change the wheel.
Continental specialists have developed another technology - ContiSilent, which is designed to reduce noise levels when driving. Tires with this technology have a noise-absorbing material - polyurethane foam, which is attached to the inner surface of the tire in the tread area using a special adhesive. Thanks ContiSilent technology, interior noise levels can be reduced by up to 9 dBA (depending on vehicle type, speed and road type). It is worth noting that now the technology is offered only for summer tires, and its use does not have a negative impact on driving characteristics, speed and load indices.
