How Far Will AAA Tow My Car for Free?

AAA prides itself on offering you various membership levels to accommodate your different needs. Each tier delivers basic forms of support with additional features as your membership level increases. • AAA Plus: 100 miles
  • AAA Premier: One tow up to 200 miles and three tows up to 100 miles

While our services are intended for roadside assistance, we extend our support by helping you get to where you need — whether it be home or a repair shop.

The Classic membership’s towing mileage is great if you’re close to a mechanic who can start repairing your vehicle’s tires or its other issues. If you choose the AAA Plus membership, we can tow your inoperable vehicle up to 100 miles. The service and distance are especially convenient if you don’t want to transport a classic car without racking up its miles.

Finally, the Premier option is where you get the most out of your towing mileage. You can rely on AAA to tow you up to 200 miles, which is ideal if you’re broken down far from home or you’re moving. Once you use the initial 200-mile trip, you can rely on our three other 100-mile towing service calls.

What Can I Expect From Each AAA Service & Benefit?

Although AAA Roadside Assistance Insurance does cost more than most other roadside policies, it’s clear that AAA offers substantially more benefits than many of their competitors.   To give you a better idea of what you’ll be getting for your money, let’s take a closer look at each of AAA’s service and benefits.

Flat Tire

The AAA service provider will come out to your vehicle and put on your spare tire so you can continue your journey. However, if you don’t have a spare then the service representative will tow your car according to your membership’s towing benefit.

AAA will also take care of flat tires on your RV and motorcycle as long as you purchased the optional coverage for those types of motor vehicles.

Fuel

Most roadside assistance programs will transport fuel to you for free as long as you ran out of gas during your drive. Of course, you will be charged the market rate for the gasoline but no charge for the service. However, under AAA’s Plus or Premier plan, you will receive a gallon or two of free so you can get the nearest service station.

Towing

According to Angie’s List, $109 is the average nationwide rate to tow a disabled car. Of course, that median towing rate can vary depending on the towing company and location. However, if you are a AAA roadside assistance cardholder then you may have your vehicle towed up to seven miles for Classic members or up to 100 miles for Plus and Premier members.

Those AAA clients that opted for RV and Motorcycle Roadside Assistance coverage may have their vehicle towed up to 100 miles per disablement.

Some roadside programs will provide towing but only as a reimbursement benefit. This means you’ll have to pay for the tow and then submit your receipt to the provider for a refund. Always check the fine print on any roadside assistance program you’re considering.

Vehicle Lockout

AAA will dispatch a provider help you gain entry if you accidentally break your car key in the lock or misplace your key fob inside the locked car

If the first attempt at getting into your automobile is unsuccessful then AAA will immediately send out a professional locksmith to assist.

Your AAA Roadside Assistance Insurance covers locksmith parts and labor services as follows: up to $60 for Classic members; up to $100 for Plus members; and up to $150 for Premier members.

Battery Jump Start

Turning your car key only to find the battery is dead can be a bit frustrating. That’s why AAA includes a battery jump start service. They also offer a battery replacement program as described below.

Battery Delivery & Installation

AAA Mobile Battery Service is beneficial if your car battery is completely dead and can’t be jumped. In this case, you can avoid wasting time on a tow and instead have an AAA Mobile Battery Service technician come to the scene, test your battery and electrical system. If you so desire, purchase a fresh AAA battery that meets or exceeds your car’s original specs. All auto batteries come with a 3-year free replacement warranty.

Keep in mind AAA only provides this mobile battery replacement service in select areas. You’ll have to consult with AAA to be sure you can take advantage of this benefit.

Extrication/ Winching Service

Bad weather, like rain and ice storms, causes many drivers to lose control and end up in a ditch along the road. Should you find yourself off road, AAA Roadside Assistance Insurance does cover extrication and winching services.

Rental Car

Once each year an AAA member can get a replacement automobile at a special discounted rate from one of AAA’s participating rental car providers. Plus members enjoy a complimentary upgrade (by one car class) along with their discounted rate.

Concierge Services

AAA Premier cardholders may utilize 24/7 concierge travel assistance prior to departing on a domestic or international trip or while they are in the midst of their journey.

AAA’s robust list of concierge resources includes:

  • Event tickets
  • Restaurant/spa/health club recommendations
  • Travel referrals
  • Destination and tour information
  • Gift basket and floral delivery
  • Business services
  • Golf tee time reservations

Product Discounts

Unlike some other roadside assistance plans, AAA members get other perks such as AAA discounts for more than 100,000 locations across the U. S. Save on things like popular restaurants, entertainment, retailers, and travel specials. Purchases can also earn you reward points that can eventually be applied to future shopping. Most discounts are available at all membership levels.

AAA claims money saved from cardholder discounts can actually off-set the full price of membership fees. This may be true as long as you utilize AAA discounts frequently since they typically account for only 5% to 10% off a purchase.

Feel free to browse the discounts offered in your state at AAA.com/discounts.

If you are one to be diligent about using and tracking a discount card then you may find AAA’s auto club to be your best option. That extra cash in your pocket may very well help you earn back the AAA membership fee. Plus, it’s rare that you’ll find any other auto club program offer such a reward program.

How Does AAA’s Basic Roadside Assistance Compare to Other Providers?

Even though AAA’s basic membership costs much more than most providers, it does include much richer benefits. In fact, AAA’s roadside insurance package has double the benefits offered by their closest competitors. Maybe you simply get what you pay for?

It’s always recommended that you look closely at each auto club’s plan and decide if their services will meet your particular needs. For example, if you travel far from home often then you will definitely want to buy a roadside plan with generous towing miles.

The below table is a great tool for determining if AAA is the right fit for you.

Many of the large insurance carriers, like Allstate and Geico, do have their own roadside assistance programs but it’s not wise to select your car insurance solely based on the cheapest roadside assistance plan. The most accurate way to figure out which company is really offering the most competitive insurance premium is to compare quotes that reflect identical coverages, including roadside services.

How Does AAA’s Classic Plan Compare to AllState’s Similarly Priced Roadside Advantage Plan?

Allstate’s Roadside Assistance program is similar to AAA in a number of ways. A noticeable deviation is that Allstate’s highest level of coverage is priced the same as AAA’s most basic plan. That’s quite a pricing differential.

Many drivers are surprised to learn that joining Allstate’s Roadside Assistance Membership plan is possible even without being an Allstate insurance customer.

As you can see right off the top, AAA costs less per year. They also allow one more service call per year than AllState. This difference can be significant if you’re stranded on the side of the highway. In addition to the number of service calls allowed, we also uncovered 5 benefits at the bottom of the chart that AllState lacks including unique perks like Identity Theft Protection, Bicycle Breakdown, and Emergency Electric Car Charging.

On the other hand, AllState offer’s more generous Trip Interruption Reimbursement, Theft Rewards and CARFAX reports.

Which Roadside Assistance Plan is Best?

The majority of roadside assistance plans are pretty similar so you’ll have to consider your own needs and budget when comparing programs.

We listed for you a few of the main points consumers take into consideration when shopping for a roadside assistance policy.

How far do you drive?

If you rarely travel far from home or infrequently get behind the wheel then the most basic roadside assistance plan should be sufficient. For example, AAA’s Classic membership that covers 7 miles of towing would do just fine. There’s no need to pay extra for a plan that includes as much as 200 miles of towing because if you’re unlikely to use the service.

What is the age of your vehicle?

According to recent statistics, most drivers only use their roadside assistance about once every three years. If the driver has a new automobile then that number drops even lower. In fact, if your car is brand new then you can probably just rely on the roadside plan provided under the manufacturer’s warranty.

Below are examples of how long some popular car manufacturer’s offer free roadside assistance on new vehicles:

  • Ford & Chevrolet: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Dodge: 5 years or 100,000 miles
  • Toyota: 2 years or 25,000 miles
  • Volkswagen: 3 years or 36,000 miles

Always check the details of your manufacturer warranty or talk with your auto dealership for specifics. Of course, if you’ve surpassed the vehicle warranty then it makes good sense to purchase a roadside assistance insurance policy.

Do you need coverage for your vehicle or for you?

Roadside assistance coverage comes in two different forms, vehicle specific or driver specific. Vehicle roadside insurance is only useful when driving a named car and is best for families with multiple drivers all using the same car.

On the other hand, driver specific plans mean your roadside coverage follows you – no matter which vehicle you drive. Driver specific coverage is best for business travelers, families that share multiple cars, or if drivers that use rental cars.

What services will you actually use?

It’s easy to go with a pricey plan that includes lots of frills but if they are not features you’ll realistically use then you’re simply overpaying. Consider the age of your car, the average distance you drive, and how frequently you travel. For auto clubs, like AAA, that provide additional perks like discounts, trip planning, and identity theft monitoring, it’s important to decide if you’ll actually take advantage of these benefits or will you just be paying for something you don’t need.

Beyond everything we’ve advised in our review, we also recommend that you periodically evaluate your roadside assistance needs because they will certainly change over time. When your current roadside plan isn’t working for you any longer then begin shopping for a new plan that will.

  • Free tire repair or what is an extended manufacturer's warranty

Author: Kirill Savchenko

Tires, like any other product, are under warranty. If, a couple of weeks after the purchase, the cord suddenly bursts, the tread peels off, then such a tire, in the event of an expert detection of a manufacturing defect, should be replaced or the money returned for it. It is obvious. Few people know that a regular puncture or hitting a curb with the subsequent appearance of a hernia on the tire is also covered by the warranty case. True, only if the warranty is extended.

On the one hand, the situation is quite strange. After all, the owner of the car can damage the wheel through his own carelessness. Having chosen the wrong speed on a country road, having swept along the roadside, littered with pieces of iron, and finally, due to insufficient experience, hooked on a curb with a wheel. That is, in this case, all expenses should be on his conscience.

On the other hand, the same damage can be received through no fault of your own. For example, due to the negligence of road services, which did not repair a pothole in the asphalt in time, did not remove the roadbed after an accident, or left a sewer hatch open. But, as you know, it is very difficult to recover anything from these organizations (and only within the framework of legal proceedings), and again, all damage is compensated by the driver.

Then why on earth would tire manufacturers take such risks and be willing to pay for sins they had nothing to do with? Of course, it's about reputation. Not all brands offer an extended warranty, but well-known and, as a rule, expensive ones. Moreover, not for the entire range of tires.

It is easy to guess that such risks are initially included in the retail price of tires and none of these companies will engage in "charity".

And, finally, it is not the manufacturing company that will directly solve the problems of the owner of the car and tires, but the dealer with whom the company has an extended warranty agreement. And this means that, having bought tires in a container at the car market or from hands, you should not count on any free repair or replacement.

But the most important nuance is that if you puncture a wheel on the road and put on a spare tire, you most likely will not go to your tire dealer for a free repair. Firstly, because time is more expensive, and secondly, due to the fact that it is not at all comfortable to ride on a dokatka or spare tire for a long time, and tire fitting can most often be found ten kilometers away.

In general, an extended tire warranty is more of an option than a 100% owner-friendly option. However, each of the tire manufacturers assumes strictly defined obligations, which may differ from brand to brand. So what do they offer?

Bridgestone

When buying 4 tires or more and registering for the extended warranty program within 14 days, the owner is entitled to a free repair or replacement of tires with the following unintentional damage within a year. Puncture, cut, sidewall swelling, tire burst, spikes falling out.

But there are 18 clauses under which you are not entitled to free compensation. For example, clause 11 states that a tire that has been repaired does not participate in the program. The tire you received as a gift, as well as with damage caused by operation without pressure, is not included. The list of models includes several dozen positions, but they are all from the top lines.

Continental

This brand is somewhat simpler. But you must personally come to the dealer for tires. Get a warranty coupon, sales and cash receipts. In this case, during the year there will be free repair and replacement in case of a puncture, cut, swelling of the sidewall.

For winter tires, there is also a compensation for the loss of 10% of the studs within 3,000 km or 2 months of operation. The vehicle must not be used for business purposes and the tires must have a residual tread depth of at least 4mm.

The list of models is also impressive, as in the previous case, but the models, again, are mainly from the premium line.

Dunlop

The extended warranty covers accidental damage to a tire that renders it unusable. Valid for a year even if you purchased one tire. To repair or replace a tire, present the tire and receipt to an authorized retailer.

The only problem is that the company undertakes to replace the tire within 180 days. Free tire fitting is provided only in case of tire repair, and in case of replacement - at the expense of the client.

Standard extended warranty damage list: bulge, tear, cut, puncture. There are eighteen reasons for refusing a guarantee. The peculiarity is that the loss of spikes does not fall under the extended warranty in any case. About 50 tire models fall under the program, including even Falken, which are exotic for Russia.

Gislaved

Subsidiary brand Continental declares right away that only tires with a 17” rim diameter are covered under its extended warranty program.

Next, almost everything is standard, but the buyer for Gislaved is a retailer and he has all relations only with him. Puncture, cut, swelling are recognized as damages, but tires are replaced only if their dimensions exceed 6 mm in diameter. Spike loss is not covered by the program under any circumstances.

The list of documents required to implement the extended warranty is not small, both for the end user and for the buyer, i. e. the retailer. And if, when replacing a tire, it is not possible to find the desired model, an analogue is offered. The Gislaved Extended Warranty is only valid for individuals who purchase tires from authorized retailers.

The program is valid for one year from the date of purchase and each wheel purchased is covered only once. The list of models is small: for the summer range - UrbanSpeed and UltraSpeed, for the winter range - NordFrost 5/100/200, SoftFrost 3/200.

Goodyear

This brand has chosen to refer to the extended warranty as "Premium Warranty". This does not change the essence - the damage falling under it is standard: puncture / cut, swelling and rupture of the sidewall. The advantage is that the program is valid even with the purchase of one tire, and the model range that falls under the extended warranty is really large and is not limited to the top segment. The only exceptions are tires for light commercial vehicles, as well as the Wrangler AT / SA, Wrangler AT / SA +, Wrangler AT / R, Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar, Wrangler Duratrac and Wrangler MT / R with Kevlar models.

Goodyear Premium Warranty is only valid if the warranty certificate and proof of purchase of Goodyear passenger tires are registered on the manufacturer's portal within 30 days of purchase.

The Korean company clearly indicates that its extended warranty applies to tires purchased only at the centers of the official dealer "SHINSERVICE" and some others. Moreover, the company explained that it is official dealers who are developing this program, and Kumho only supports it financially. Types of damage and prerequisites are completely standard: a tread depth of at least 4 mm, but you need to purchase at least four tires.

A prerequisite is the presence of a correctly completed warranty card, which the consumer receives at the time of purchase of tires, as well as the presence of a sales receipt, delivery note or work order indicating the date of purchase, model, size and cost of the tire.

It is interesting that if you need to replace one tire and in the absence of this model, the manufacturer changes two at once. Thus, the rule of mandatory installation of two identical tires on one axle is observed. The list of models Kumho does not regulate.

Maxxis

The Maxxis Extended Individual Warranty is valid for two years from the date of purchase for standard damage, which is good enough. However, the list of models is small: NP3 Arctic Trekker, NP5 Premitra Ice Nord, SP-02 Arctic Trekker, AP2 Allseason, WP-05 Arctic Trekker, NS3 Arctic Trekker, NS5 Premitra Ice Nord, SS-01 Ppresa SUV.

In addition, tire fitting is carried out at the expense of the client participating in the program, and repairs are carried out only by applying a universal patch or “fungus”. As in all other cases, registration in the program and purchase of tires from an authorized dealer is required.

One of the denials in the extended warranty states that the tires are not being inflated. Even if it is caused by mechanical damage. That is, in the event of a puncture or rupture of the tire, the car should immediately stop.

Michelin

The French company has one of the best extended warranties. Firstly, during the year from the date of purchase, the tire can be repaired for free an unlimited number of times and only changed - once.

Secondly, the warranty covers all models for passenger cars, off-road vehicles, and commercial vehicles under the MICHELIN trademark, purchased by both individuals and legal entities.

Minimum extended warranty restrictions. In particular, driving with broken wheel geometry, with the parking brake on and with the wrong pressure. This also includes acts of vandalism.

It is stated that the program works only when buying tires in the network of tire centers "SHINSERVICE" from 02/28/2019 to 03/01/2020 inclusive, but it is already known that it has been automatically extended for another year.

Nokian

The Finnish brand declares a lifetime extended warranty, but only on the Nokian Hakkapeliitta and Nokian Hakka models for cars and SUVs. Nokian Nordman is only valid for a year from the date of purchase.

Repair or replacement is carried out when the tread is worn to no more than 4 mm of residual height, in case of punctures, tears, cuts and swelling of the sidewalls. The warranty must be activated on the company's website, but tires can be purchased from any authorized dealer, in a car dealership or even in an online store.

By the way, Nokian also introduced an electronic extended warranty system. It implies the absence of a paper warranty card. It is enough to register your purchase once and activate the warranty service from Nokian Tires in order to subsequently use the service to repair or replace a damaged tire.

Pirelli

The Italians called their extended warranty program Tirelife. To become a member, you need to purchase from two tires in the "SHINSERVICE" network and draw up a package of documents. In case of standard operational damage, the tire will be replaced or repaired free of charge. What's more, twice a year, the company guarantees a free tire inspection for hidden damage.

The program covers the entire Pirelli range, with the exception of Formula and truck tires. Valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Alexander Golubev,
expert "SHINSERVICE"

In our opinion, the extended warranty for tires is, first of all, the desire of the manufacturer to demonstrate the quality of its product and show its customer focus. But, perhaps, not every client will be satisfied with the conditions of the proposed program from a particular tire brand. Most often, because the Russian car owner is not used to filling out any extra paperwork, and prefers to repair the tire immediately after damage. Not tied to a specific dealer. However, those who operate their car primarily in the city, where there are many shops offering extended warranty tire repairs and replacements, may enjoy this program. In addition, high quality repairs from an authorized dealer will be guaranteed.

Tire fitting is a fairly simple procedure, but a lot depends on the quality of its implementation: how the car will behave on the road, how long the tires will last. Fuel consumption even indirectly depends on the quality of work. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all stages of work are carried out competently and professionally.

Tire fitting steps:

The work is carried out in several stages. The process can be divided into:

removing the wheels from the car;
removing the tires from the rims;
installation of new tires on wheels;
inflation;
balancing;
installation on a car.

To remove the wheels, the machine must be raised. The easiest way to install a tire is to raise the car on a platform, lift or jacks. If you work with a jack, you will need to ensure that the car is level. And on a platform or lift, the masters have access to all wheels at the right height at once.

The wheel is removed and then washed or cleaned. Working with a dirty wheel can interfere with the normal process, so it needs to be cleaned of dirt. Nord uses a washing machine for this, thanks to which the wheel can be completely cleaned in seconds.

To remove a tire, you must first deflate it by unscrewing the valve. After that, the tire is squeezed out with special tools in a circle. If you squeeze it in one place and try to remove it, you can damage the sides or the valve. A phased spin allows you to remove the tire as accurately as possible.

Then we start mounting the new tire on a special machine. It is put on carefully, pressing in the same way in a circle until it snaps into place. All work starts from the inside. The tire is lubricated with mounting grease so that the beading is successful. Our master examines it, determining the degree of wear and the presence of possible damage.

The tire must then be inflated. This is done in several stages. Having pumped up the tire slightly, master Nord makes sure that it fits exactly into the seat.
